The National Gallery houses the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The museum is free of charge and open 361 days per year, daily between 10.00 am - 6.00 pm and on Fridays between 10.00 am - 9.00 pm.

Thank you for the fine brief intro. Homer seems inexhaustible as a source of reflection on America--and especially on race in America. Just read Peter Wood's essay, "Near Andersonville," which unpacks the images in a WH oil "lost" for some time. Amazing that an old board with some paint on it can still provoke anguish, heartache, tears.

8:47 If he was hoping for a rescue, wouldn't he be facing towards the ship on the horizon? How could he not know it's there? Is he so wrapped up and upset with his situation that his lack of hope keeps him from seeing any further?

Wonderful essay. I knew very little of Homer, though I do recognise several af the paintings shown here. I must also commentd the boat sculpture made as a comment on his painting - it is very powerful.
