Our tour of good Southern food continues! It's time for my Italian husband, Alessio to try Southern BBQ at Puckett's. Of course we had to get him all the good stuff- brisket, pulled pork, bbq chicken, ribs, coleslaw, collard greens, baked beans, green beans, Mac & cheese, potato salad, mashed potatoes with gravy and cornbread! We also grabbed some pimento cheese bites, fried pickles, and wings for apps. Can we eat it all?!?
Thank you for all of your love and support! Don't forget to subscribe and turn on the bell so you never miss a new video! You can also follow us on our other socials below! Ciao for now! -Jessi and Alessio

I was a U.S. Marine at the American Embassy Rome, Italy for a year (1993-1994). One day I discovered an old BBQ pit hidden away. I pulled it out, cleaned it up and put it back into service. The Italians were blown away eating authentic BBQ with all the sides. Life was good 😊

@@danietkissenle That was 30 years ago. So, I do remember explaining it to the local butcher and I remember that he knew what I was talking about as far as the cut of meat was. I used to bring him samples of my cooking. Damn, I'm getting old 🤨

@@danietkissenle I honestly don't remember. Because it was an American Embassy, we had a source of goods from the USA and I believe I was able to purchase bags of American charcoal. I remember that I also purchased homemade charcoal from the store that was 3 blocks away. This was 1993. So, I may not remember everything perfectly. I also barbecued when I was in Jugoslavia in 1992 and our supplies were shipped from the USA via Frankfurt.

Usually Italians are not disrespectful of any food and are very open minded, unless people don't try to alter Italian food claiming it is Italian. When food is good why not admit it and enjoy it?? For me it's like that at least. As an Italian whenever i go abroad i try every food before to judge or go to an Italian restaurant.

And Kansas City BBQ beats Texas BBQ hands down, no contest! Even my Texas friends who come to visit admit that! The best pork ribs you will ever, ever eat! But that being said, as a BBQ lover I was salivating like crazy over your Puckett's plates! Might be a trip to Franklin, Tennessee in my future - ha!

The first American pork BBQ was created when Spanish sailors met Native Americans at the mouth of the Savannah River that divides South Carolina and Georgia . The Spanish brought the hogs , and the Native Americans roasted them over coal fires like they cooked their wild game . At the time Spain claimed Georgia as part of their Spanish Florida territory . Texas BBQ comes from the Spanish that colonized Mexico and used Native Mexican cooking techniques to cook the cattle they introduced into the New World .

Southern food has it's roots in French, old UK and African cooking. Somehow...it all came together over a century or two and we have this gift. Glorious! :-) I had this experience first in Chicago, in a tough part of town where I felt like an outsider. Once I started raving about the food, it was like I was family. Since then I've had better BBQ, but THAT BBQ was still, at that time, the best food I ever ate except my grandma's cooking. I said so and everybody laughed. :-)

@Branden J mom and pops are the best. The food is fresh, the portions and prices are decent. Several chain stores are now having their food processed in factories and preportioned, then shipped out to the restaurants. Besides mom and pop independent restaurants keep the money in the community, where chain stores send off the profits to the blood suckers on wallstreet.

Love our BBQ in Texas, but to be 100% fair... we usually focus more on brisket here. I have had KC BBQ and some from the South (never tried white sauce though), and let me say that I am very proud and fortunate that BBQ is treated with such care and reverence in other southern states. Every bit I have tried has been fantastic and you can immediately tell the attention to detail these folks put in their food. I honestly don't have a particular favorite. Some people (regions) do ribs better, some do wings and chicken better, some do beef better, and some do pork better. I have never tried Hawaiian BBQ, but I hear they do fantastic pork too. That doesn't even include whole hog, which is another animal entirely (no pun intended). I am being 100% honest in saying BBQ is hands down the best food a person could eat in my opinion. Pitting BBQ spots in different Southern states against each other will just lead to another civil war 😂. Love fried pickles! The crunch, the flavor from the dill, and the ranch to counter it is a perfect balance. Fried pickles, believe it or not, originate in ARKANSAS! First created in the summer of 1963 by the late Bernell Austin who owned the Duchess Drive-in. Austin's son David Smith said, "He thought, well there's got to be a way to cash in on that pickle. Of course this is the south, where did it go? In the deep-fryer." Genius move. The idea was originally a gimmick to drum-up business for the drive-in that was located across the highway from the Atkins Pickle Company, but from there it just became a Southern staple once it got popular at festivals. Although the drive-in closed in the late 60s, you can still get the fried pickle made with the original recipe (only his family know the recipe) at the Picklefest held annually in Atkins, Arkansas!

I'm from Memphis and anybody that I meet from another country i take them for BBQ 100% of the time they think it's one of the best meals they've ever had. Koreans are always super impressed, and that's saying a lot Korean food is meat forward and hands down one of the best cultures for food in the world.

I’m really proud of you. I come from Italians and I know how proud we are about how food is made and how it’s eaten. I find it hard to be so open to new cultures because I think about how wrong it was made. Very good job guys.

Loved all of this. Seeing him try the mashed potatoes w/ gravy reminded me of a story my mom told when she was dating my father. Both of his parents were born in Italy, so my dad was 1st generation in US. She said he would order a hamburger with mashed potatoes and gravy on the side because he didn't get that at home. She thought it funny that an Italian craved that of all things.

I’ve traveled throughout Europe and the United States, it always amazes me that every meal that I had speaks to the history and culture of that region. It’s like eating your way through History. Sadly many people who travel to Europe or the United States don’t take the time to truly enjoy and appreciate it.

And people wonder why we love this food in the south. So funny towards the end he is eating like a southerner. Using his hands, licking his fingers. I've been to 3 different countries in Europe and Cuba and I wouldn't trade my southern cuisine for any. Real southern food is BBQ, collards, cornbread, baked beans, fried green tomatoes, green beans, potato salad, pinto beans, fried chicken. You have southern food like Louisiana and the cajun food which is delicious but it is not traditional southern. Thanks for showing him "traditional" southern food from the Bible Belt which so many of us grew up on and still love today.

I just stumbled on this video, but I hope you, Alessio, have experienced all the different varieties of BBQ we Americans have to offer. Thanks for the great video, loved seeing y'all's reaction to great BBQ. I'm in San Antonio, TX and I'm sure other Texans will confirm, we're spoiled for choice for really really good BBQ all around us. You have to understand that you can drive 4 to five hours in just about any direction and still be in Texas. So a weekend daytrip driving to check out some great BBQ 2 hours away is an easy, fun and delicious weekend experience. Of course Texas is beef and brisket-centric, but the best pitmasters will also craft their own in house sausage. They'll have a signature blend unique to them and found no where else.

@R.Sanchez--
@R.Sanchez-- Год назад
@@aaronpatterson2369 A shame? Mmm, no thankfully. Texas bbq doesn't lean on sauce. If imitation is truly the most sincere form of flattery that might explain why Texas style bbq is revered and imitated around the globe. Google Texas BBQ in Ireland, South Korea, and even domesticity in New York and the Carolinas. The best pitmasters let the BBQ speak for itself instead of hiding behind a sauce.
