Recently, I was invited to speak to a class at at MIT called "DJ Culture and Performance". It is a 4 week credited trial course instructed by MIT GameLab research scientist, DJ Philip Tan. The presentation focuses on life after the class if students wish to pursue a career after taking the course. This video is a snippet of what they are doing as well as my presentation to the students!

MIT Media Lab was probably the first - and for a long time the only - mainstream academic institution to even consider 'DJ stuff' and non-academic electronic music technology something worth thinking about & researching in a deep way. glad to see they're still interested in contemporary DJ culture at an authentic level. nice1

Yes, I would be down for that MIT DJ class; so cool. As a founder of a local DJ collective, it really is as much networking as it is skills and of standing out. Great knowledge you share. I’m certainly still learning, and plan to for a long time to come.

Thanks for sharing this! I recently got my 1st in Dec 2021. I actually felt a bit awkward looking at people so I looked at my gear most of the time. 😅 The "first show" advice is really helpful. I like the part of "looking at the crowd". Something for me to practice and get used to!

For a younger Dj. (I say younger because you are younger than me). You are wise beyond your years.

I'd absolutely attend a dj class. I live in a small town in England and I've never even met another person who is into turntsblism. So I've literally never seen another person scratch in person! It's lonely as fuck 😂

Sound advice all the way through 👍 If I may, I think you should have limited the amount of words on your slides, which got busier and busier. I'm sure that you can talk about the subject for hours without needing to read from the slides 😉

*Stephen Hawking *our . Also, the quote your referring to is, "A.I. could be the worst event in the history of our civilization." It wasn't about technology as it was about artificial intelligence.

@@priyonjoni ironic, considering Hawking's Lucasian chair in mathematics was previously held by Charles Babbage (the so-called Father of Computers) and will one day (c. 2395 depending on timeline) be held by Mr Data an android (formerly of Starfleet).

Pri yon Joni: I'm an old-school, open format DJ. I subscribed to your channel for your technical understanding of DJ gear. Really, I just modified the jog wheels on my FLX-6 because I had been experiencing the problem you described in another video. But I found something you said in this video offensive; not malicious, but offensive still the same. In your description of the course Mr. Tann teaches at MIT, you said, "A lot of knowledge that Philip is sharing are things that I don't even believe most DJs know about. I had a few pop-quiz polls up here on my channel and some folks think that Grandmaster Flash invented beatmatching and scratching." (Time Index,1:55-2:00). The statistics from your polls revealed, "70%" for "beatmatching" and "54%" for scratching. This quote is a fallacy. A fallacy has a premise(s) and a conclusion. Your conclusion was: "A lot of knowledge that Philip is sharing are things that I don't even believe most DJs know about." The premise was: "I had a few pop-quiz polls up here on my channel and some folks think that Grandmaster Flash invented beatmatching and scratching." (Time Index,1:55-2:00). The statistics from your polls revealed, "70%" for "beatmatching" and "54%" for scratching." Your premise is a hasty generalization. Your conclusion pitted Mr. Tann's "knowledge" versus "most DJs," but your poll sample was taken from "some folks." Who are the "some folks"? Were they all DJs? Was it a mixture of DJs and non-DJs? What was the percentage? As a DJ, I know Grandmaster Flash didn't "invent" beatmatching and scratching. And he never said he did. He built upon the techniques of Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flowers. He credited Grand Wizard Theodore, whom he mentored, for inventing scratching. Grand Master Flash is a PIONEER of hip-hop. His contributions to the genre (Backspin Technique, Punch phrasing, and perfecting the scratch technique) are well-known and his innovation is memorialized in the National Museum of American History (his Technics SL-1200 are on exhibition there). As I said, I'm an old-school DJ. I play disco. I know who David Mancuso and Nicky Siano are. These DJs pioneered "continuous music." David played Disco "continuously" to create the "disco atmosphere," while Nicky Siano used two turntables to play "continuous music" while mixing between genres. But there are no "inventors" here. This is innovation. Lastly, and most importantly, in your comment, you present Grand Master Flash and/or his innovations as fraudulent, "...some folks think that Grandmaster Flash invented beatmatching and scratching." Here is my problem with this comment. A thumbnail of DJ Francis Grasso appeared in the video just before your comment: "A lot of knowledge that Philip is sharing are things that I don't even believe most DJs know about." This type of statement is usually followed by, "for example...," and I can imagine something like, "I didn't know DJ Francis Grasso was the first DJ to beat match by ear in the 1960s and '70s." But you invoked Grandmaster Flash in a way suggesting that he has taken credit for "inventing" beatmatching when he never said that he did. This is denigrating the legacy of a hip-hop Icon. But this is typical in America. It's a mindset: What black's build must be torn down...

Greetings Rodney, really appreciate your insight here and my apologies if it caused any misunderstanding in my message. If I may elaborate on the reasoning for my statement, perhaps we can find common ground on it. Firstly, I was not insisting that Grand Master Flash ever took credit for inventing beatmatching or scratching. It was an option in two separate polls where both times, the majority of viewers who participated in the poll selected GMF as the creator of these techniques. The reason I bring it up is because it’s my belief that DJ, hip hop, and dance music history falls short on the knowledge of most DJs. Which is why I find classes like Philip’s so important. Many DJs don’t know the stories of how modern DJing came about. Whether it was a discotheque or a block party on the streets of the Bronx, there was always a common story of the music and culture coming from marginalized communities. With that said, I’m actually with you that many stories of DJing can be white washed. I had no intent on diminishing the legacy of Grand Master Flash. In fact on time index 14:25, I shared a quote encouraging folks to “be the first at something” and just “be the best”. I said, “I believe it’s GMF”. The only reason I left some wiggle room is because the original video where I heard him say that quote is long gone from RU-vid. Unlike the electric guitar community, I feel the average DJ is not interested or at least exposed to the legacies of the art form that the giants that came before have left us. I’m actually working on a video expose as we speak. Don’t want to give too much away, but it’s regarding a famous turntablist routine that was done by one of my Black DJ heroes. There has been other DJs who claimed he did not create this routine so I thought it was important to put this out there once and for all. Would love to discuss this more with you because it’s really awesome to meet folks interested in the history. Feel free to shoot me a DM on my Facebook page or Instagram.
