What do Lutherans believe? I wanted to know, so I visited a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church (LCMS) where I met with Pastor Will Weedon who explained what Lutherans believe and how they're different from Calvinists and Roman Catholics.

This is part one of the interview - there was just too much to drink in here. The second half is going to get into some very challenging stuff about Lutheranism and Catholicism, so I hope you'll come back for that. If you want more straight-up Bible content, I'd be grateful if you'd check out the Ten Minute Bible Hour podcast. I just started it, new 10-ish minute episodes are available every weekday morning, and we're working straight through the Book of Matthew. Just to clarify: Lutherans in no way dispute the development of terminology; how could we? But the point of the Church’s refining the language was always to confess more clearly and accurately “the faith once delivered to the saints.” Jude 3. The doctrine itself did NOT develop; what developed was the way the Church sought to confess it such a way as to cut out misunderstanding and false understanding. FWIW.

Rev. Weedon, just wanted to say thanks for sharing so much knowledge and with clear passion and love of Christ! I wanted to ask if there is a sense of reclaiming the ancient church in the minds of the Reformers. There are things that I can find in both the Lutheran and Anglican perspectives that lean more towards the Eastern Church. In fact I believe that there was a relationship between the Lutheran theologians and Patriarch Joasaph in Constantinople. Is it correct to say that the Reformers sought to return to original Christianity and to cast off innovations made by the scholastic movement within the Roman church? May He bless you and your ministry! Love from a brother in Christ, Rob

Simon Templar yes, particularly in the second generation Reformers. Read through Martin Chemnitz’ Two Natures in Christ and you will be astounded at his reliance upon the Eastern fathers (whom he’s reading in Greek). A friend of mine once described Lutheranism as an Eastern Christology wedded to a Western soteriology. :)

@Lincoln & Welland Regiment I think you replied to the wrong comment. I'm confused by the beginning of your comment. Yes, too many criminals have infiltrated the catholic church, because they feel safe hiding in the clergy. However the church does not promote this and believes those men are in grave sin. The bishops and cardinals who moved them around and tried to hide their actions are evil men too, however the true catholic church and believers in Christ are against these criminals and the criminals who allowed them to enter the church. Take a look at the good priests out there who don't get any media coverage, I know many of them and they are good people.

The Roman Catholic church was on a trajectory that early Lutherans rejected. Martin Luther even exchanged letters with the Orthodox and considered joining the Orthodox church until it became clear to him that the two theologies did not match. The Roman Catholic church went on and had the Council of Trent and later Vatican II, but it is no accident that conservative, confessional Lutherans "appear" to fit somewhere between Traditional Catholics and the Orthodox because in many ways, they do. One big irony is that modern Catholics love to vilify Luther for "creating Protestantism" while many Lutherans actually are sympathetic with the Orthodox church's position that it was the Roman/Western church that broke away from the East and not the other way around. Any way you slice it, one of the biggest characteristics the three churches share is placing importance on correct theology and doctrinal boundaries. In this way, the Germans are just as stubborn as the Romans and the Greeks.
@TheMechanocore
@TheMechanocore Год назад
@@shellieperreault6262 it sounds like you're making a claim that orthodoxy is protestantism. It is true that they broke from the catholic church but the catholic church views the eastern churches as not in communion but sacraments made through the eastern churches are valid. That's the difference between the great schism and the protestantism reformation.

@@alhilford2345 I am 67 years old and I have estimated that I have been to over 5000 Masses during my life. So I think I qualify as a Catholic, I have also read Luther's commentary on Galatians, and I have viewed several documentaries on Luther. I also studied some of his writings (more controversial) many years ago. Currently, I am witnessing a creeping crud of fanatical piety coming into the Catholic church which has convinced me that there is a very strong element in the Catholic church that does not know what the Gospel is. For that reason, I have increasingly listened to more and more Protestant teachers, and I have been more than pleasantly rewarded. Yes, I still am Catholic and I find nothing objectionable about Luther's basic view of things. My only objection to the current Lutheran church is that it lacks courage to stand against many of the things that are clearly evil in our culture. I am very tired of talking to my Catholic friends who always seem to resort to the argument: "We have the real presence and they don't." Wow, that is weak and pathetic, IMO. I prefer Peter's view of things in the Acts of the Apostles after he had the vision of the blanket descending from heaven full of all sort of creatures, etc. After this vision Peter declared he realized that all men who fear God are acceptable to Him. I agree with Peter.
@spyroninja
@spyroninja 4 года назад
@@ronaldkulas5748 but you must acknowledge that Luther's basic view of things entails a schism from the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic church -- a rejection of apostolic succession that creates a new church which is in its nature at odds with Christ's church. This very schism leads souls away from salvation by offering a false gospel not in line with THE Church. Luther's theology is only similar to the Catholic theology because it's among the earliest to splinter off. Place Luther in the 21st century and there is no limit to the blasphemy he might believe in -- because it is his church, not Christ's. I pray you don't allow the liars and sinners that have penetrated inside the Catholic Church be the reason you are driven out of it. Retain what is yours.

This video is an eye opener for many it seems and I have had a similar experience at the local church here. I am looking forward to attending again this Sunday! At the Lutheran church, there is a first, second and third reading (which could be an Old Testament bible verse reading, New Testament reading, and epistle reading... all of which are Christ focused. Just like all of the beautiful hymns that Bibically "bombard us with the word of Christ"). To me so far, the Lutheran church is like a beacon of light that's stands firm in history and relevant traditions that as so many protestants are quite frankly ignorant about. Go to a Catholic Church and attend Mass. Don't reject the Catholic Church until you understand the Church. Talk to a Catholic Priest and get to know the Catholic Church from the source and not what others say. Also, those things you found in that Luthern service is because it originated from the Catholic Church typically. More than likely the readings you hear at the Luthern service are the exact same as the Catholic readings because of the Revised Common Lectionary. Vatican II implemented the formation of the RCL and in 1983 it was reviewed, adapted, and approved by various Protestant church authorities. Created because of the Catholic Church and then some Protestants approved it for their our. Also the Catholic Church is Church history 👍

@@krissmork videos about Greek and other mythology, where the Bible came from etc. I was watching a video about Genisis and how it came from Greek and mesopotamian beliefs. Really neat to watch. Many videos I've watched recently are from the "Mythvision" RU-vid channel.
@krissmork
@krissmork 11 месяцев назад
@@mayganphynix8267 Oh, boy. Sounds like you're listening to secular sources mainly then. Not to argue, but be mindful that these claims are based upon there being similar imagry in the Bible as in other mesopotamian religions - but this doesn't prove the one coming from the other. An easy way to open up the possibilities, is to recognize that the Bible was written by people trying to convey meaning to those of their times, and thus resorted to use imagery and language that was familiar to them. If they believe in Ba'al, who was believed to be almighy, and soaring on the clouds of heaven, how would you as a prophet of Yahweh, the God of the Jews, convey that Yahweh is the Almighty God? By Yahweh riding on the clouds of heaven, for example. John did the same in Revelation, where he used similar descriptions of God as the Greek were familiar of in connection to Zeus: "The One who was, and is, and is to come". The assertion that Christianity or Judaism therefore originates from these religions, is a rashed one. Well, that's coming from a Christian, so hah! But a good source if this interests you still is a professor by the name of Michael Heiser, who has his doctrate in the ancient mesopotamian religion and languages (I with 99% certainty didn't call that by the accurate name, but he studied something of the sort. Very cool insights from a complete Bible and ancient religion nerd.) He is on youtube and had a podcast "the naked Bible podcast". He died to cancer recently, which is tragic, but his work is still being published. Anyways, thanks for the response 😁

Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and make a series of wonderful videos exploring both the physical building of the church and Lutheran theology! I Just wanted to say I was so excited to hear Pr. Will Weedon mention The Lutheran Church Canada! I have been a member of it since my baptism as an infant --- and hope to attend seminary to become a pastor in this church body --- If it is God's will! I really want to say that I am thankful for the dedication that the church has to preaching the central doctrine of justification: that by grace, through faith alone, broken sinners, are justified! and as we come to hear the word, and partake of the sacrament of holy communion we are forgiven our sins and strengthened in our faith! Hallelujah - Praise be to Christ

I really appreciate hearing that, and thanks for jumping in on the new podcast too. I'm just finding that there's only so much room for videos each month, and it's tough to work straight through a book of the Bible the way I used to in video format oh, so I figured the podcast would let me do as much of that as I wanted to and if anybody wanted to come along they could.

It was listening to Paster Weedon and the others on Issues Etc. that moved me from Calvinism to Confessional Lutherism (though I’ve have yet to be confirmed due to illness and being house bound). As an ancestral German I grew up in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Their doctrine is sound. In my view they make a little much of certain tradition and ritual but I'm thankful to have had a sound Christ honoring faith foundation as a child. That is perhaps something getting harder to find in 2020 with many heresies.
