As to the name, Student in German means University Student. We have a different word for school children up to the end of highschool (Schueler). So it kind of suggests a step up from regular school fountain pens like the Lamy Safari. I love this pen but can´t decide on the colour.

Interesting how a lot of people felt like the name "Student" refers to kids. When I first saw the pen and their special names for different cap colors like 20's this, 50's that, I immediately thought of university students especially protesters when it comes to 60's and 70's 🤣 This is a very beautiful pen, I'd like to get the green one in the future. Btw I'm really happy that you mostly review fine-extra fine nibs. Most people are into broader nibs and it kinda makes the review useless for a extra fine lover like me.

Such an overlooked and underappreciated brand with an impressive heritage. What I love with Kaweco 🖋️ is that most of them are very modular to permit easy nib swapping and at a reasonable price too. Very similar to my beloved Dia2. I wish that they would reintroduce a piston filler.

I got a pen one time that had one of those empty cartridges in it, or so I thought. It was the same situation there was a cartridge with ink and then an empty cartridge and we had bought ink too so I took what I thought was the empty cartridge and went to fill it not realizing that there was no bottom on it it was basically just a plastic tube in the shape of a cartridge used as a spacer I guess. Luckily I noticed the ink going all over the table before I expunged the entire syringe worth of ink and quickly realized my folly and got it all up. But if anybody ever gets one of them I would double check it before you try and fill it just to be safe.

Really attractive pen with some great, classy colors. I had the chance to hold one at a local shop. Unfortunately, the section wasn't to my liking. Just a bit too smooth. Gee, I wonder why Kaweco, a German brand, decided to skip the 40s 😅

I have two Kaweco Student pens: a clear transparent one and the 70s Soul (Orange) pen. It is a very well made pen, with its decidedly retro looks. The shiny golden metal section is sort of ugly, but it doesn’t bother me at all in gripping and actually writing with the pen. Priced affordably enough and just a pretty, dependable, and quality pen for newbies and experienced users alike. I quite agree with you and think that the ‘student’ label probably hurts this pen’s image among some potential buyers. Because the student tag conventionally denotes a cheap budget pen that necessarily compromises on quality. Not so with this Kaweco pen. At least, so far. I prefer it much more than the Sport line. Db, you should consider an essentially very similar looking (albeit more pricey) Kaweco pen that is my own favorite Kaweco, i.e. the Dia2. Also, in my experience with many Kaweco pens, I’e suggest that Kaweco’s nibs are rightly known for their inconsistencies. My preferred B and BB nibs seem to be the most notorious in Kaweco’s nib range. I reckon their M nibs are the most reliable and satisfying, all round. Anyway, good call on this one. The Kaweco Student is a very good pen at a very good price point. Alas, lack of a converter is quite inexcusable. Mine, luckily, came with one included in the box. But otherwise readily recommended! Well done video, bud!

They make a GREAT stub nib. I have F, M, and a stub nib that I regularly switch about and I love them all. They do tend to write dryer than I typically like, but I tune them myself and now they all write swell. I think the Kaweco nib inconsistencies are a dumb oversight that is easily fixable with proper QC before they leave the factory. If Lamy can do it, so can Kaweco. However, they are easily fixable if you're comfortable tuning them yourself. Otherwise, that brand might be a bust for you, I'm going to call it. For what it's worth, I've seen that be a rampant problem in higher end pens too, I don't get it. I do love the brass/ AL line and I have this very pen on the way in the mail.

Have always liked the looks of the Kaweco Student, however, would not recommend for someone just starting with fountain pens. Cost for the Kaweco Student runs from $70-$80. Have seen the transparent model for $45.90. Many think spending $25-$30 is too much to spend for a pen (LOL). The last folks i introduced to writing with a fountain pen I made some reasonable suggestions, allowing them to write with my Pilot Metropolitan, Lamy Safari or Lamy Al-Star, as well as my Jinhao 100 Centennial & Kaigelu 356. Not everyone who loves fountain pens has deeper pockets or parents/partners willing to spoil them with costly pens.

@@Doodlebud : For a first timer to spend $70+ and then discover they don't like dealing with ink cartridges or bottled ink, can leave a sour taste. If you've got money to burn, go for the gusto. I deal with a lot of younger adults, college students and seniors who want to return to FP writing, and their budgets just fit the Safari/Al-Star/Jinhao/Kaigelu/Pilot Metro. range. Once they discover they enjoy the whole FP thing, then they are willing to invest in something a bit more. At that point I might suggest this Kaweco pen. I have one friend who has a costly MB 149--got it based on a collector's recommendation and found out he does not enjoy dealing with ink stains or ink bottles. Beautiful, costly pen, but now he does not want me to talk about pens "ever." He's left with a sour taste on the subject. When I do FP "evangelism" I try to make these following discoveries: 1. Have you had the opportunity to write with a pen? Always keep one extra, inked pen in my purse for this purpose. 2. Is your handwriting small or large? Will determine nib suggestions. 3. What is your color preference? 4. Are you familiar with bottled ink, or prefer to use ink cartridges? This information helps me to know if they have a stationery store in their area or to tell them they can buy ink on Amazon and Ebay to get started. 5. Have any of your older family members written with a FP? Interesting the testimonies I have heard about a grandfather or other family members who once wrote with a FP. Sometimes this can stir so many good memories that they will buy a pen for that reason. 6. What would be your favorite color of ink? Discuss brands available. I love Iroshizuku, but a $22-$25 bottle of ink will cause some to gasp (LOL) 7. Can we talk about your budget limit? This informs my recommendations. 8. I also discuss pen brands they can buy from China if their budget is really limited. I will pull out a Jinhao X750, 159 or something that might catch their eye. 9. I like to find out if they are traditional (black/blue pens), or a bit more adventuresome. 10. Discuss paper appropriate for FPs (Black n' Red; Rhodia; Minimalism Art; Scribbles; LeStallion, etc.; and 90 lb weight copy paper). 11. Also inform them of Fountain Pen Network, where they can learn all they want to learn about pens, calligraphy, paper, etc, etc). Also instruct them to come to RU-vid and watch vids on pens and inking pens. My most recent FP converts - a young lady who works for the Electric Company in my community, who ordered an orange Pilot Metropolitan; and a young lady who works at the hospital--who ordered the turquoise Pilot Metropolitan. One ordered a F nib, and the other ordered a M nib--based on their writing style. At the time they paid $18.99 for their pens. Let them both know that once they became comfortable writing with a FP, the wealth of pen beauties could be found on Amazon, Goulet, Jet Pens and Ebay.

Count me as one more fan of this pen. I've had one for about 3 years now. In that time, my collection has grown from around 10 to 36 pens, including several with gold nibs now. It remains a favorite. It is still in the top 5 of my smoothest writing pens. Its medium steel nib is a delight--smooth, consistent and problem-free from out of the tin. I almost didn't buy it because I generally avoid smooth metal sections since they tend to turn in my hand. However, the shape and size of the grip on this pen just seem to work for me. I also like that despite its relatively small size, it is big enough to handle a large international converter. I also like that it is easy to change nibs on it and take advantage of Kaweco's other nib options. As you suspected might be the case for some, because of its name and unassuming appearance, I initially thought it might be priced at the upper level of reasonable for what it is. After years of use, however, I now think of it as an excellent value. Mine is just a solid colored (red) model, so it was less than the dual toned featured in this video. However, had I known then what I know now, I would gladly have paid the extra $10.00. In fact, while I don't have two of any of my pens, I'm thinking of springing for one of the dual toned models somewhere down the line. Finally, I recall commenting on another FP You Tube channel which tossed out the subject of under-appreciated pens that this was my top candidate. It really doesn't seem to get the love I think it deserves, so thanks for posting this.

The fact that the Kaweco Student is overlooked in the English-speaking world could be related to the fact that, in the German language, the word "Student" refers to a person enrolled at a university, whereas in the English-speaking world, it can also include younger students like kids. In the German-speaking world, the word "Student" already implies a certain level of maturity and seriousness. Additionally, unlike in English, the word is stressed on the second syllable. Because all the squeeze converters I’ve used seem to work perfectly well, without issues. Small ink capacity, yes. But simple to use, unfussy and efficient. Only needs the sac replaced when it eventually fails. A few of my pens from the ‘70s (Pilot, Parker, Sheaffer etc…) are fitted with these converters. They had the EF nib on it, which is my preference, as well as loaded up with Lennon Tool Bar Bitter Orange Tea Ink. Perfect combo, insta-love. So I got those as well as one each of the other decade pens, and am testing inks for the other pens. Did you settle on an ink for your Jazz? How was yours? I went back and asked the seller and they said theres a "break-in" period for kaweco pens. Im not so keen on that advice as my tswbi and lamy both came out smooth out the box. Was it an in store purchase or online? If it was in store I would go back for sure. Yes there can be a bit of a "break-in" period but I don't 100% buy that. I get many pens that are absolutely flawless out of the box, the way they should be. If I get ones that are off, I tune and adjust because in my view they should be ready to go. For me its more black & white. The pen writes properly or it doesn't. I dont think I should have to wait and see if it will be a good writing pen or not. I'd say that's a good way to go about your purchases, I do that as well. It gives you time to research it and see if it's truly what you want. I see many folks pull the trigger out of FOMO and then be full of complaints that could've easily been discovered with simple research beforehand.

Man I WISHHHH I could get an extra fine that’s wet and nice like that. I can’t beget an extra fine or fine without it feeling like I’m writing with a nail or a needle. I have a hard time going lower than a medium which sucks cause sometimes I like a nice thin line but I can’t find a smooth one. Who makes the best fine or extra fine pens
@Doodlebud
@Doodlebud 2 года назад
For me, I find Faber Castell has excellent nibs out of the box. Also, Gravitas Pens checks, tunes, and smooths nibs when needed. My pocket pen came with an XF and its really good. This one is quite nice as well. Most of my pens are either F or XF, so for me I'm used to the feel. Mediums and up of course are more wet and smooth, so going from that to even a really nice XF will feel different so keep that in mind.

@@Doodlebud will do. I will check out some of those pens when I’m able to purchase another one. I totally understand and expect that the feeling when using a F or EF is going to be different than one would get with a M, I like a little feedback, that pencil like feeling, but I’ve just had a bad draw with the 3 or so Fines I tried to get. I mean so bad you can feel the nib skipping over the paper, non existent upstrokes and that feeling of scraping the paper. If I could find one that writes like the one you showed I would be estatic! Have you done any tuning to that nib in this video? I know sometimes you do your own grinding, that’s something I’d like to get into as well, I’m just too nervous atm, I don’t have any spare or disposable nibs should I mess up but I do basic tuning to my wife and my pens all the time, I don’t mind a little tuning.

1. All other German pens that are called 'student': 1. Are intended for elementary school kids. 2. Have a specialized nib. 3. Have a pronounced triangle grip. 4. Are cheap (

Is it worth 3 Sports? If you just prefer a larger pen with a nicer resin body, and all round aesthetics (albeit with the same nibs), I’d say it is. I gave away all of my Classic/Skyline Sport pens (but not the AL, AC and Steel Sport) after I bought my two Kaweco Student pens. They really are very nice pens.
@ichirofakename

@@sajjadhusain4146 OK, the answer is Yes. I only mentioned the Sport because I know how many people love it. Similar to you, I was disappointed in my cheesy plastic Sport, but I like my Steel Sport a lot.

Not a fan on my sport and only keep it to use for my videos as size comparisons and talking points. For me, if a pen works well, built well, and I feel is reasonably priced (which is different from person to person) I don't think about if I'd rather get several less expensive pens vs one I really enjoy. Is a $40 bottle of wine worth it when I can get 8 X $5 gas stations bottles form the discount bin....😏

I can’t get with the $70 price on these. I’ve had a few sports and they weren’t really anything that special to me. One was plastic, the other solid brass. Not saying it’s bad. But at least I’m USA new the price doesn’t match the quality in my book. Now I will say the kaweco Supra peaks my interest. Except I’m reserved with the threading on the end of the barrel to post the cap. That screams cross thread city
