A comprehensive retrospective and overview of the Shadow Hearts games that became cult hits on the PS2. We will also be discussing its predecessor, Koudelka, in just as much detail. These games are still worth checking for their unique style, atmosphere, compelling stories and gameplay. In the case of Koudelka we see a visionary put his heart and soul into making something truly unique and ahead of its time. It is, dare I say, a work of art, even though Hiroki Kikuta himself would probably disagree with this assessment of his work! Matsuzo Machida's duology of Shadow Hearts games gives us a heart wrenching narrative involving one of my favourite JRPG protagonists, Yuri Hyuga. Finally, we end things on the ever quirky Shadow Hearts: From the New World, which I personally have mixed feelings on. In many ways it's a fantastic game with a great turn based battle system. On the other hand, the narrative is nowhere near as strong as the others. Regardless, it still brings something new to the table and is absolutely worth your time.

I'm stunned by the quality of the VA in Koudelka, honestly. Considering its age. I mean there are AAA titles on PS3 onward that don't have voice acting that good.

This is one of my favorite game series from my childhood. No one understands when I try to explain it to them. The judgement ring is so good I can't play generic RPGs without feeling like something is missing.

@@aweigh1010 i havent played Origami King yet so Idk if that has it. But every paper mario I've played up to sticker star had them. And the Superstar mario games up to dream team. I get it its not for everyone. Im not big on most final fantasy games .

Nice. Very nice indeed. I like to think that the Chess Battle Grid of Koudelka was inspired by the real life Edward Plunkett, who was an avid chess player that even invented his own variant of chess.

And its true, for that reason we must to preserve and force sony to release more archives in the stores! The videogames nowadays is boring...its rare to find a game that give you much hype as before, most of these new games is "realistic" and give less impact as before, with tons of multiplay games online that looks the same and same with different ingredients...

I loved the series. To me SH1 is the pinnacle of jrpgs.. It ticked all the right boxes for me. Dark theme, turn based combat, cool fusions, fantastic story with real world references. Jrpg devs, towards the end of ps2 era, started took a more action oriented style for their new games. I think jrpg as a genre has lost its identity. SH series was the last sanctuary for me.

Kouldelka, shadow hearts one and two all need remasters/ports man. We don't get too many horror jrpgs, so this would be a lovely treat for fans of both genres.

Koudelka... i bought this game used on a flee market since ... i kinda liked the artwork on the box. I've read about this game before but that was long before i bought it so i totally forgot that xD and BOY was it cool. Though the "if you don't get the small item from THIS spot and have it in your inventory you are f... at the end" was annoying, it was impressing that the ingame cutscenes used motion capturing (i think) and they even had GERMAN VOICE ACTING! (and pretty good though). Interesting also that the German James had a much "older voice" compared to the original. So for me James was at least over 50 I couldn't find the first shadow hearts for PS2 but i LOVEd the second xD

This is the one series I could see it killing itself with each entry. I can't tell if it was the continued insertion of more humorous and edgy humor, or joke characters. I played Covenant first, but the first game is the best to me. Gameplay was refined in Covenant, of course. To the New World will always be a mistake in my eyes. It had no unifying aesthetic, nothing cohesive. It seemed like it was parody.

It's funny how I discovered Shadow Hearts. In middle school I was trying to write a novel and I needed a title. I had just come off of playing Kingdom Hearts and I wanted my novel to have Hearts in the title so I brainstormed and came up with Shadow Heart, and then I googled the name to see if there were any existing IPs that used it already and to my surprise, there was! I was angry to see Shadow Hearts pop up and was like 'they stole my title! >:(' and I decided to buy the game to 'scope out the competition' lol it was so funny. I was pleasantly surprised to find the game wasn't that bad and its ideas were much different than my novel's concept, but as for my title, I had to go back to the drawing board... (I never finished it :( ) lol

Thank you for this. Shadow Hearts was beyond my favorite series and I definitely don't regret spending extra money back in the day to pick up my copies of 1 and 2. There was something to be said for the character development and party dynamics they put in the games, FtNW being the outlier in that aspect.

It's quite fun to be honest. I played them ages ago. I recently bought and replayed them. Shadow Hearths 1 and 2 still hold up well. Koudelka is great, but it's a PS1 game and has limitations. You can skip Shadow Hearts: A New World. It's fun, but the feel is a bit off.

Koudelka was such an awesome game. It was a fusion between resident evil, a jrpg base turned combat system and a leveling system like dark souls. Its a shame games like this don't get a remake.

I first discovered the Shadow Hearts games through the third game (before I even knew it was the third game ) and immediately fell in love with it, trying to go back to the original shadow hearts though was a bit tough but still enjoyed playing through them again, what bums me out though is that there might never bee a 4th (or I guess 5th if I count koudelka) maybe one day but after all this time I really doubt it.

Looking at the European/US cover of Shadow Hearts 1 the same Scene is in a Episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh Anime the Second part of the Traped in a VR fantasy game Arc. That features both A fllying Castle and a Card called The Witty Phantom both based of real cards along with the fact Yuri had the same VA in Shadow Hearts 1 in English as the English dub for Kaiba who features in said scene.

im not gonna lie shadow hearts new world is a guilty pleasure of mine. while the story wasn't really good i enjoyed how silly it was. and the music was pretty good in my opinion

I miss this series, and I am rather annoyed no other devs tried to replicate the 'Horror RPG' idea. I also think it was a mistake to get sillier with each game, it's horror aesthetic made it stand out among other RPGs, both back then and to this day as well. If I tried to name every RPG with Horror aesthetics (Both Japanese AND Western.) I'd probably couldn't find even 20. Off the top of my head, I can only Name Parasite Eve 1 and 2 (Shame there was only 2 of them and definitely not another one.), Gorky 17/Odium, and Sweet Home (Which is actually the game that led to Resident Evil.), and a Free-Ware RPG Maker game Porterminus (Which unlike most Horror games in RPG Maker is still an RPG (I like name dropping that one so people go give that a look.).). There ARE others, I just don't remember them off the top of my head.

The Shin Megami Tensei series has plenty of horror elements and it's still alive to this day. The amount varies from game to game, but it's certainly there for all of them.

I borrow Koudelka from a friend who never beat it before, but was actually my first RPG I ever beaten. I still have all three of my copies of Shadow Heart games and only beaten 1 and 2. Still working on 3. XD

There is currently a Kickstarter running for a spiritual successor of Shadow Hearts, named Penny Blood. Its actually together with an Spiritual Successor of Wild Arms, named Armed Fantasia. Since the Guy who made Shadow Hearts back then is the one making the Kickstarter for Penny Blood, Machida Matsuzo together with Akifumi Kaneko who is making Wild Arms i have very high Hopes for both of those Games. I hope the Info Spreads fast. More ppl need to know even if the Games already met the Minimum. More is always better :)

I had SH 1 and 2. I love 1. 2 and onwards they focus more on silliness. Which messes up the humor. And the atmosphere. I quit 2 like a quarter in. I remember it at least seemed like it got good reviews at the time.

It's odd that Kodelka and Yuri are considered unique when they certainly aren't as protags. Anti-heroes of varied moods have been a thing in games, books and movies for quite a long time, especially in Japanese media/anime. Especially if they control demons/half demon/is a demon.

I played this entire series in reverse lmao. I barely understood English back then and my brother bought From the New World first because it was the only rpg in shelves in the now closed gaming store. I only figure out that I played it in reverse in 10th grade and decided to search the series up in my school computer

I miss Shadow Hearts. Apparently the license holders/publishers don't even make games, they're like a general computer software company or something? Since the original developers dissolved. I wish we could get a new game. It was so unique in its concept and design. :(
