When I do pt here at the rehab center, the physical therapist puts a gait belt on me and hangs on when I’m walking of climbing that small set of wooden steps. I don’t know if it’s different when you’re climbing stairs with crutches, but t hat looked scary to me. I might show one of the PTs that video of you climbing those stairs and see what he or she thinks of it.

@@lovethemflowers I had in home PT for 2 weeks and he watched me walk up and down stairs too. Now I am in office PT and he had me walk up the little flight of stairs just to watch, and watched me walk. I am now walking without crutches 90% of the time.

While it sucks that this happened to you I think this documenting of the issue discovery, surgery, and recovery process will help a lot of people now and in the future. I'm looking forward to seeing you get all of this behind you and watching you out on the trail again! I'm also really interested in how you'll build your base fitness and speed again once you're back to running. You've got a lot of series that you can make based on this unfortunate set back that can really help a lot people not only who previously ran, but who are new to running.

Brotha. You're one tough hombre and have an amazing attitude! Good on you. At 71 y.o. and having run 106 ultras and 25-100 milers, my body has been adequately abused over the years. I'm still running though because I'm a runner and thats what I do. Your choice of an ice recirculation machine to reduce inflammation is a good choice. Having had both knees scoped, I can attest to the benefit of ice therapy. Take your recovery slow and easy and let your body heal as it must. Keep the faith.

@@UltraTrailSteven Well, I'm no longer crushing ultras, but I'm still running. In my prime, I ran the Angeles Crest 100 ten consecutive times with a best time of 22:57 and ran Western States 100 five times, taking home 4 silver (sub 24) buckles and 1 finishers buckle. Nothing more rewarding than finishing a tough 100 miler and basking in the satisfaction of a solid effort and the gratitude that your body endured. Despite all that, I'm seriously humbled by what you're enduring now and how you're handling it, with optimism and perseverance. Keep up the good fight and know that you're being an inspiration to all runners who are struggling with physical challenges and limitations.

Good luck Steven. I’m now 18 months post hip replacement and back to my beloved trail running. I must say that the road to recovery is non-linear. The proverbial roller coaster! The key for me was trust in the outcome, AND a ton of time going core/hip strengthening as part of the rehab. I had a similar journey through my other hip replacement 10 years ago, and returned to doing all the crazy athletic activities that I love. You’ll get there.

December of 2017 I had total hip replacement. March of 2018 I fell on some black ice in our driveway and the implant rotated in such a way it penetrated my femur and gave me a nasty spiral fracture. At almost 70 now I’ll be riding the MS City 2 Shore 75 miles on this coming Saturday. Keep yourself moving as much as your body tells you to. If you can’t move too much work on your cardio. Please don’t fall! Best of luck to you.

Wishing you a speedy recovery! I’m 25, and I just got both of my hips replaced 9 days ago on September 25th aswell using the anterior approach and the recovery process is going well, I can already walk without crutches, the swelling is starting to go down, I elevate my legs when I lay down and I ice them a couple of times per day. I’ve been in the hospital for 4 days, was mobilised a few hours after surgery with a walker. It’s amazing how far technology and surgery methods have come, to have major surgery like this and be up on your feet a few hours after. I had to get my hips replaced because of osteonecrosis, I had cancer in 2022 and got chemotherapy, because of that I developed osteonecrosis in my hips and they eventually collapsed. But I’m grateful that I will be able to enjoy a normal life with these new hips. I also got ceramic on ceramic Zimmer prosthetic, from what I’ve seen they’re kind of the industry standard so I hope they will last for a long time. I wish you a speedy recovery again and all the best, you will get back to running in no time! 😁

I had major complications and was in the hospital for 4 days. I could not move my leg! They think it was because of my 2 prior surgeries and all the scar tissue it made. After a year now, I am still not fully healed and i have femoral nerve damage from my knee to my hip. You made the right choice on going straight to THR.

I had a THR 12 years ago at the age of 40 due to Avascular Necrosis. I didn't start running until 8 years later but whilst not being the fastest runner in the world (was never going to be at 52) I'm able to run ok, am getting faster and am working my way through different distances (did a half this year and have a marathon booked next year) with the aim of doing ultra trails in the next couple of years. The surgery did leave me with slightly uneven leg lengths which may or may not have contributed to the many injuries I got when I started 4 years ago but I rarely get any injuries these days. I'm now back into marathon running and am working my way to a first ultra. I lost a large number of years after the operation because of having a conservative doctor and the advice not to run. I had mild arthritis in both hips but went with this route first. One hip has been great but the other I started to get pain and stiffness in it. I went back to my surgeon and arthritis has spread in the hip. (Grade 3 almost 4). I am having left total hip replacement Oct. 16 here in Asheville NC. I'm getting super nervous but I really want to get my life back. I'm a school teacher and coach (basketball). I coach cross country for years. Thanks for a great video.

I'm much older than you but I too just had a total hip replacement a couple weeks ago! I was a very active caver for decades and now I'm hoping to get active again, maybe even run that marathon I never managed to run! Re: that toilet lift thing: I found it to be worthless. I have a large walk in shower (2.5m by 1.5 m or so) totally tiled inside and I also have a medical shower bench (a friend who previously had hip replacement gave it to me). So I just sit with one cheek on that, the bad leg splayed out at a healthy angle and let it go! Dog scooper to clean put it into the toilet and then some bleach shower spray and hose it down! MUCH less stressful than wrestling myself into that ridiculous toilet extension.

Yeah, two or three days of not going to the bathroom was definitely not my usual routine. Glad to be back to normal and not needing the Colace. You’re pretty young to need hip surgery, (I’m 65) and then you want to get back to running as high impact as that is? My surgeon is ok with low impact activities like walking, hiking, and bicycling. I wasn’t into running before, so I have no interest in starting.

Hang in there, I had some severe bruising a few days after mine as well. I got nothing on the meds for you, due to knowing my self, I took half of an oxy at night to help me sleep and that was pretty much it. the Dr. was surprised when I declined his offer to refill it at my one week follow up. I'm envious of the ice machine, I just used ice packs, fortunately we had a large freezer and my wife was a champ and rotating them through. You will get through it and be better out the other side. I had an injection in the area about 7 years ago that did me really good and I've generally had zero issues since then. Your surgery was 10 days before mine! Mine was scheduled for 7::30 too. I had to be at the hospital at 6:00. Even after the three days of showering with Hibiclens, they had me wipe down all over with the wet wipes they use on the hospital patients who can shower. Good grief, I just showered with the Hibiclens two hours ago. You have to be there early so everyone who comes in to talk to you can ask you your names and birthdate and ask what surgery you met having, plus a little review of your medical history.. Redundant, but the staff is just trying to be careful that your who you are and that they’re performing the correct surgery. I thought it was kind of funny when my surgeon put his initials on my right hip. This is after the fact, so I guess you got asked the same questions over and over as well.
@lovethemflowers
@lovethemflowers 5 дней назад
I stopped the video before you got to the hospital. I heard “full body wipe down”. Oh no, you had to it too! Nothing like wiping you body down with those wet wipes. Felt a bit cold afterward. And what’s with the full body wipe down,?? How about about just the leg of side of the body you’re gonna be operating on? Sheesh.
@UltraTrailSteven
@UltraTrailSteven 5 дней назад
Haha I know right! Why the wipe down? lol it was weird cause most of the hospital staff thought I was having a PAO, I was like NO. THR for me.
@lovethemflowers
@lovethemflowers 5 дней назад
During one of the pre-op appointments, one of the two nurses I saw had the record they’d started on me, the one each person who saw me just before surgery would be flipping through, asking the redundant questions. The record SAID hip surgery, but the pre-op nurse must have said “knee surgery” about three times while she was telling me how to prepare for surgery (included showering with Hibiclens) and getting my medical history.

Im off work for 6-weeks. Im not allowed to do any ab exercises, can’t lift more than 10lbs….. however!!! I can walk and do an easy run ( pending on how I feel). I do ice it a lot and take ibuprofen… they had me on Percocet for a few days. Dude, I’m so over getting my mid section cut on !!! Told everyone the Alien baby popped up and took off running…. Funny, you showed the raised toilet seat, because my wife had her hip replacement done as well, and she got one. Told her I was going to get her a walker with a yellow tennis 🎾 ball on it… She had lots of physical therapy… she got this all done a few months ago. She walks good now. Any hoot, wanted to reach out to you and see how you are doing?! You’ll heal quickly! Lots of ice and rest…. PT I’m sure….( I sound like a nagging guy telling you what you already know 🙂🙂 ). I had a full hip replacement in 2016 at age 63. I had run 5 marathons over the previous 7 years. My doctor told me I should stop running. In early 2017 I ran/walked the Marine Corps 17.75k. In 2018 and 2019 I ran the Richmond marathon. In 2020 I had my second hip replacement on my other leg at age 67. Took about 18 months before I started running and I shortened my stride, picked up my cadence and took it slow. Ran my first half marathon this year at age 71. Not sure about the 100-milers, but there is life after a hip replacement or 2. Get back to running. Sounds dumb, but if ultimately the hip fails, you can get another replacement and maybe only at that point stop running. Don’t give up on what you love. Oh, and get the hip X-rayed ever year.

Surgery is a b*tch but sometimes an evil necessity and as for Tramadol, I’ve never met someone who it agrees with. I had hallux valgus surgery 2 years ago which would be tiddly winks compared to what you are going through. They gave me a couple of boxes of morphine tablets to take if I needed, but being a stubborn runner I was never going to take them. I had 48 hours of pretty intense pain, but then the body realised that it had to provide its own pain relief and pitched in; I was pain free from then on. I would guess that the antibiotics were what were messing with your gut; I hope that is ok now. It’s amazing what some of us masochists will watch; I didn’t plan on watching more than 30 seconds of this 🤔 Good luck

Damn, listening to this is so waaaaay different to what I went through. I was sent hope with a course of blood thinning medication and paracetamol!!! I did take the full course of the thinning tablets but didn’t touch the paracetamol, not because I’m brave - which in not but - because I didn’t need it. I didn’t have any anaesthetic just spinal block so that helped in recovery. Don’t worry about the bruising, it will likely get worse before it gets better, I have some wonderful Technicolor pictures to frighten you with - it’s not a problem. I had swelling in the operated leg, it’s called ‘elephant leg’ - again nothing to worry about, it’s reduces over a couple of weeks with no lasting effects. Also I was warned about getting tired, which I did. Wake up feeling full of energy and two hours later completely dead and nodding off every 5 minutes, again nothing to worry about. I’ve had both hips replaced in the last 26 months and am fitter than I’ve been for a long time. You’ll be fine and back running, just do all your physio. You’ll be great.

My perspective, long distance running is a bad idea for most people. If you have bad running form, the consequences will be hip replacement, knee replacement, etc… and most people have poor running form because it’s highly difficult for most people to develop proper form given genetics, flexibility, etc.. i love to run, but starting to think i should minimize this as i approach 60. Would you agree with my perspectives?
