Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

"An insecure writer follows rules. A rebellious writer breaks rules. An artist masters the form." - Robert McKee I love this quote so much. It's less important to break or follow rules, what's important is understanding _why_ you are breaking or following them

Do you think that logic makes it more or less marketable?

@@MilitantTalker Definitely more. A movie that religiously sticks to all rules because it's trying to play it safe comes off as dull, cliché and unoriginal. Take Justice League and Rise of Skywalker. A movie that just breaks rules like a teen having a rebellious fit doesn't tell a satisfying story. Take Game of Thrones season 8. When you get the sweet spot where the movie/show is both interesting, new and subversive but also follows storytelling conventions that make it a satisfying story, it becomes something special. The Boys is an excellent example.

Yeah, love to weave both the narrative and character arcs throughout a designated story structure. It's like parenting two children.

I'm writing a story for the first time right now. Thanks to everybody here who helps me learn the basics and avoid making errors early on. These videos are really helpful!

What was funny about this video was that he said he doesn't like using character arc and then proceeded to exactly describe what a character arc is. It's easy to fall pray to the misconception that a character arc means your character needs to be a completely different person or personality by the end of a story. Stories are about change. If your character arcs from one state to another but is still fundamentally the same person, that's a character arc, even if they have the same personality. And of course, there are character arcs where the character doesn't change at all (flat arcs) but instead the focus is how they change the world around them. Work that slider, writers!

What's truly interesting about this is that I've never heard anyone describe the growth of a character this way. 'We are who we are and we adapt to the circumstances that are presented to us', (not verbatim but ya know). Compelling view on storytelling! 👀👏🏾

Omg yesss!! Make a personality type and create the conflict that fits to their individual journey! Yes

Do you have a similar view on story structure?
@wattpadusergeek342

I do. I wrote “intuitively” for a long time, but my stories became way better when I learnt structure and finally understood why my intuitive writing worked and how I could leverage that natural ability in even better ways. Thank you Film Courage for being a part of that journey through these videos.

I tend to follow a tight structure at the beginning of the process, then let it flow naturally when I start writing proper.

I did rescue someone from a fire, though it was not at all impressive. I knocked on his door, waited for him to get their coat and asthma inhaler, and escorted the man downstairs. The bravest thing I did was stand between the man and the source of the fire to encourage him to get out the door. What was interesting was that fear was irrelevant in that situation. At worst my friend might have lost his flat. There was not a lot to be afraid of, but even if there were I think that doing what needed to be done was more important. I learnt some stuff, but I cannot say my "character" really developed.

How refreshing to hear a realistic view of characters. The character arc ayatollahs use that rule as an absolute - a knee-jerk way of rejecting scripts.

I arc from personality type to another type still using Jill's advise about crisis or triumph.

Developed a model I call ”the character wheel”. It allows characters to play with other archetypes during their journey between the two that support their arc. A lot like bridal dresses. One dress makes you look or feel fat, another feels too slutty for gma, another doesn't match the bridesmaid options, another is too expensive, another looked better on that one celebrity, another doesn't vibe with the time or location, and so on. So certain characters might grab at other archetypes to prolong the inevitable, sacrificial, cathartic process their story requires to evolve from ”want” to ”need”. No offense, but who goes to the movies or picks up a thriller novel to read about everyday life? I get what he is saying but it's entertainment plain and simple

Character arcs are what give your story meaning. If your character hasn't learned anything, than neither has you audience so what's the point? And you shouldn't avoid something a story needs just because it happens differently in real life. The kind of stories that are compelling enough to be told in a movie rarely happen in real life too. But I can guarantee you, if they did, a man would change significantly.
