I never knew of the Scots connection to native Americans until recently. I am a Scottish girl who's clan (the Mackenzie clan) originates form the highlands. They were the most influential clan of the Scottish Highlands. I have no idea if my ancestors married into native American tribes because going by the spelling of my surname (mackenzie instead of McKenzie) suggests that my ancestors did not emigrate out of Scotland.. Highland clans who emigrated removed the a from the beginning of their surnames. Macdonald immigrants became Mcdonald.. Mackenzie became McKenzie..mackenna became mckenna and so on and so fourth. I'd love to know my ancestry. I know I am definitely Irish as my clan was started by Irish settlers by the name of Fitzgerald. Native Americans are such attractive people. I am Scottish yet I was obsessed with pocohontos and anything tribal growing up. My daughters have about 2 dream catchers each in their rooms lol

First comment. Yes!!! Well done Brucie for telling us this story. My great grand-father, James McLanachan Grant, was picking cotton in the fields of Birmingham, Alabama in 1917, planning to bring his family to the USA, when he decided to return to Scotland and volunteer to serve in the Great War. He died in the hills outside of Jerusalem as a private in the Cameronians. Whenever we visited Edinburgh Castle we would go up to the wee chapel and read his name in one of those big death-registers. Grand or humble, every family has a story from that war.

Great tribute. I am fascinated by the Scottish immigrants, regularly Highlanders, who commonly settled with Native American tribes here in the U.S. My theory is that they had a similar enough tribal mentality, similarly courageous in battle, and the Natives may have been the only ones willing to share space with poor immigrants / escaped European slaves. I know the Natives often gave refuge to escaped African slaves. If you know of any more stories along this topic I would be excited to hear them. I have a particularly close tie to Native Americans and Scots if you could not tell from my name. Another great video. Thanks!

The children of Scots and Cherokee, Muskogee, and other Native peoples were referred to as the "blessed blend" because they seemed to inherit the best attributes of both Gaelic and Native sides. They were described as strikingly handsome/beautiful, highly intelligent, and unusually talented, and many of the greatest leaders, such as Principal Chief Alexander MacIntosh of the Muskogee and Principal John Ross of the Cherokee were from this Gaelic/Native blend. If you read the names on the roles of many Southeastern tribes, it's like reading a roll call of Scottish clans.

Another comment on Scots impact in US history. My home town is Tulsa, Oklahoma. Oklahoma is the headquarters of 39 Native American tribes. Every summer Tulsa hosts Scottish highland games. They are attended by Native Americans with Scottish heritage as well as locals with Scottish ancestry. This is because Scotsmen (and women) were key parts of the exploration and settlement of the old west. They married Native Americans and became part of their tribes. I don't know more details about their specific involvement in old west historical events, but I think this part of Scottish and US history should be told.

As a Scot raised in Canada, the prefered terms are; First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples
@raguelelnaqum
@raguelelnaqum 3 года назад
In the States the go-to term is general Native American, although in the last two decades the term 'Amerind' has gained hold, because it's short for American Indigenous, the people who say the 'ind' means Indian are wrong), and because complicated geopolitical realities of some of our Arctic peoples who used to migrate between Russia & Alaska seasonally before the borders were closed, and it also respects the mixed heritage status of groups like the Boricua Taino and Lumbee. It also reflects the fact that several of our indigenous peoples are displaced from their historical homelands and therefore technically not 'native' to their current Reservation, such as those displaced by the Trail of Tears or the various First Nations refugee groups that arrived when Canada began further expansion into their territories in the 1890's.

About one in every six Canadian's served in WW1 but initially the Canadian military wouldn't accept non whites. By 1915 the casualties changed that. First Nations people served in many units within the Canadian military. More than six thousand served, many with distinction. Although treated as equals mostly while serving. Once they returned to Canada they were denied benefits that other ex military received. Nice that one of the First Nations people who made the ultimate sacrifice is remembered.

@@stephennelson4964 its a mixed bag many tribes had their own reasons Some better than others but the ancestors could be just as brutal without reason This isn't to say you or wrong or anything close to that but to give you a little more insight of this topic I'm mixed cree and have done alot of research about my ancestors and honestly am still learning But there is one story you reminded me of My ancestors the cree and the black foot would fight eachother alot And in this story the 2 groups were going to have a battle but the cree instead of going to fight went to the Blackfoot camp and waited for them to leave for battle and once they did they raided the camp killing women and children. There are more angles to the story of course but my point is that we Too were also capable of hatred and wraith Also from the fact he said grandfather and grandmother makes me wonder how long ago that actually happened and it could of been more recent than what we are thinking Because I am thinking about 1900s to the 1800s

Responsible for some of the earliest paintings of the US Midwest and his son was an early VC recipient. My wife's grandfather, a French voyageur in the employ of Stewart, is one of the faces in an watercolor in the castle. Sir William's best friend and companion, Antoine Clement is now said to have been his romantic companion. Would be interesting to see if he's buried over there. Scots in North America and first nation/native Americans (depending on which side of the US/Canadian border you are on) often got along quite well unless their best interests clashed. The cultures had more in common than most realize. Some of those Scots eventually integrated with the tribes, but what is really amazing is how many current Americans and Canadians are part first nation/native American in some areas. This is generally regarded as something to take pride in. I am American, but know a Canadian lady, whose brother is a Tribal Chief and a former co-worker in the US, who attributes his hunting prowess to his native American side to cite two examples and I know others.

As a mixed American, my first thought was nothing unusual about a Native American being in Scotland. Most of us have at least 1 Scottish ancestor.

I’m a bit Scott’s and I heard Irish. It shows up on my genealogy a wee bit. I have the temperament and so did my aunt uncles Irish. And which I am also and many other things. I love to listen to what’s going on but not in the government when I do listen the government I like the wild ones, the wild West Clair daily and Mick Wallace.

Hi Bruce another cracking story. I was thinking that Nonah has surviving descendants that even know he is on a memorial in Scotland. The Attawapiskat first nation band office might be interested in the story as it follows on the theme of truth and reconciliation of first nations peoples here in Canada.

There are MANY tales to be told abt our Scottish ancestors in America. A TERRIFIC one is about the Scottish Trader Bowles, and his family. The Scots made America. And the Scottish Indian traders are so important and unknown. They are an integral part of our Ancestry. And likely the reason many of us lived, a perspective important during the Trail of Tears. When someone says they are an Indian princess, you can bet they are.

Thank you for this Bruce. I love all your content. Before covid I was spending my days off work and holidays visiting anywhere I could camp or get photos of our beautiful country. Stirling and Perth are high on the list. of course Stirling castle and the Wallace monument were on the list. You have just added that grave yard and pushed Stirling higher up the list so I can show respect to that young native American. My usual hangouts are Glencoe and Loch lomond so your videos of these areas are of greater interest. I camp on the site of Glencoe massacre on the exact date and time two year ago. I will tell you it was eerie . I told my mum I was there at the time of the massacre and Im sure she blames me for it now.

This kind of associates itself with a letter I sent on Patreon. Back as early as 1830 Natives of this country Canada (not their name for it) were treated as expendable cheap labour. They were used and abused for several generations and may I respectfully point out, many of the abusers were Scots.

So bizarre to reason that bringing lumberjacks to the UK to fell trees instead of felling Canada's trees...much more in abundance...
@faithlesshound5621
@faithlesshound5621 2 года назад
Maybe the reason was that the local British forestry workers had already been sent to fight in the trenches, so they needed a new supply of men strong enough to fell the trees that were ready and waiting. At the start of the war they had no idea that it would go on for so long.
