Ron C and I headed out on the kayaks for what we anticipated to be a bang-up Smallmouth Bass kayak fishing day about a month ago. It was surprisingly slow. We were catching at a rate of somewhere in between 1-2 fish/hr (combined). At this stage, both of my cams had overheated a couple of times. I had just finished getting both of the GoPro 12s cooled, and back up and running, and forgot to set them in Hindsight.
I had also just re-rigged to a purple Mule Fishing 1/32oz jig loaded with a Z-Man Finesse TRD on the PB&J pattern. While paddling up to position, I saw a moving shadow and cast in front of where it stopped. BOOM!
I expect to get into a ton of Trout and Fallfish in this river, but not here. I can expect to regularly see those species 100 miles upstream. This was a HUGE surprise! A 20" Rainbow Trout nailed the Ned Rig in an absolue sight fishing scenario (a first for me).
I was not only surprised to see such a specimen that low in the river, but also that I sight-fished her on the Ned Rig, and she immediately crushed it. This is an amazing argument for trout on darker color finesse plastics in broad daylight.
