An Unplanned and Out-of-Control Protestant Reformation

In 1517, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, he surely did not intend to shatter the union of religion, culture, and society of Latin Christendom, and plunge it into centuries of religious wars that claimed the lives of millions, philosophical chaos, and existential doubt that is still with us,. But that is exactly what happened, because he very quickly lost control of the Reformation he'd had no intention of starting. His 95 Theses turned out to be the catalyst that created the modern Western world: it awakened the spirit of individualism; people now felt free to believe what they liked, whatever made sense to them. The world that emerged was radically different from the world the reformers - Luther, Calvin, Zwingli and all the others - imagined they were bringing about.

Wow, I feel very lucky to have found this channel so early in its history. Looking forward to seeing it grow, especially as our host becomes more comfortable with a teleprompter! :)

The intransigence of the Church of Rome to any reform led to this crisis. If it hadn't been Martin Luther, another intellectual would have come forward to present the same objections. The dam would have burst eventually, but Luther's role made it happen sooner. The ruling families of Europe had reasons for maintaining the Church under their control. Once Christian princes and kings joined the Reformation, conflict was inevitable.

Might the papacy's use of crusades for political reasons also have contributed to the loss of trust amongst the princes and commoners?

The Crusades were to defend and take back the Holy Land from the muslims and return it to whom it belongs, Jesus.

The Muslims were advancing towards Europe through Christian lands. Maybe that's why we had the Crusades😊

The thing is the "union of religion culture and society" was unbiblical and unchristian. it only showed that the Church had got into bed with the world centuries before How do i know this? Jesus said so if indeed he spoke truly BTW I no longer hold that knowledge is so complex that it is impossible to know anything at all - i did once. what men do not WANT to know does colour the issue, but that turns it to a moral issue not one of knowlegde per se

Luther just wanted to discuss some things. It wasn't really wasn't unusual. Luther didn't know it would blow up like it did.
