As a teenager, Brahms was introduced to Liszt who offered to include him among his group of followers, but only on the condition that Brahms changed his traditional approach. Brahms refused, however, and the two were later characterized by critics as mortal enemies. But Liszt never held a grudge. Shortly after Brahms published his second piano concerto, Liszt wrote him a letter requesting a copy of the manuscript, respectfully addressing him as 'Master'.

One of the best first movements of a concerto. Bernstein and Zimmerman is a legendary duet.

YESSSSS ❤ CERTIFIED CLASSIC 🙌🙌👌This work alone would put Brahms among the GREATS. You’ll love it, very excited for the rest. You can also listen in this format (Bernstein/ Zimerman) to all Brahms (2) and Beethoven concertos (5), all amazing works incredibly performed 😊

I recommend to listen to movements 3 and 4 in one video, cause mvt 4 is quite short

Gidi, Hello from Japan! I just heard your Japanese "Subarashii" ww and made me big smile. I found your channel about a month ago and since then I have been enjoying the music journey with you. Thank you for making wonderful and joyful content. And here is my reaction request. Please try one of the performances by Nobuyuki Tsujii, who is world famous "blind" pianist from Japan. He lost his eyesight, but I believe God gave him something beyond visible and his performance is like gifts from divine. (I might put some of my recommendation pieces later on at Reddit)

The hardest of Liszt pieces is the transcription of the 9th symphony by Beethoven

Brahms is an interesting case for me. He was never a favorite composer of mine. Far from that. I think he is symphonic writing is very heavy in a bad way and very string-focused. His solo piano works aren't that interesting either. And he rarely wrote good melodies too. Howeverrrr, this piano concerto is very good. The first 2 movements are thrilling and exciting as hell. If only the 3rd movement wasn't the most boring thing you have ever heard in your life, and the 4th was a little bit more dramatic like a proper finale, it would be a very good concerto. But yeah this movement at least is amazing

the third movement is one of the most beautiful things ever written, you need to listen to it again if you seriously think that, and the fourth movement is intentionally underwhelming, its supposed to be cute. Dramatic finales are cringe sometimes

He could be a good melodist when he wanted to, but that wasn't what he aimed for.

@@tamer3397 Yes, that moment in the middle where everything gets silent and the clarinet plays slowly with the piano accompanying... Brahms summoned a whole new world in this suspension of time.

@@tamer3397 Nah its just boring. I could gladly accept a 20 minute slow movement from rach or Chopin. But not from Brahms lol, I don't want to sleep through the piece. Just because sth is slow and not loud doesn't mean it's beautiful. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. This is subjective obviously, but the fact that it is long as hell only makes it worse

The 4th symphony has fluid writing, one of the greatest post-Beethoven.
