Hello here's an update on the Russia Ukraine war and the role of ham radio. Thanks for the support and information sent in.
I want to provide an update on ham radio frequencies to monitor as Russia continues to wage war on Ukraine plus discuss the possible role of Ham Radio now that the population is becoming displaced. We are likely to see more of the communications infrastructure being destroyed with more people turning to radio to communicate.
I've also responded to a couple of questions and suggestions.
RSGB response: / 1496893013674573838
Ukraine repeater network: www.repeaterbo...%&call=%&use=%
Mediumwave updates: mediumwave.inf...
An example of a websdr: websdr.ewi.utwe...
I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My RU-vid channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.

Ham radio is currently banned in Ukraine by the ukrainian government. From a safety aspect, loose emissions sink ships and from a battlespace spectrum management piece. Obvs it's important to monitor for emergency calls as that takes precidence but let's not dx spot the things.

I am no expert but if I were in Ukraine the last thing I would like to do is start broadcasting on any frequency. It seems to me that would be a good way to be on the receiving end of a missile attack. These are rather difficult times for the Ukrainian people and a bit scary for the rest of us as well. I hope that the amateur radio community finds some way to help that brave nation and its people. Great video. Charlie in Virginia KM4ZZ

My thought on it is if you are in a country at war and are using your ham radio to call CQ to fill your log book then you probably need to earn a missile. If you actually think you are talking to the Ukraine you may be talking to Moldova giving false information for you to spread on Facebook.

If they were to use a digital signal like Thor 22, they could get a brief message out in under 10 seconds, and it takes a fair bit longer than that to lock in on a signal.

@@Dave_KE5ES the propaganda that is coming from all sides is astounding yet unsurprising. Not just state agencies, but outright trolls. Last night there was a looped transmission on 4625USB over the top of the Buzzer. Clearly coming from Western Europe

If they haven't already done so they will probably switch the Internet off so its down to good old fashioned radio to keep the communications going.

Before it started I heard plenty of CW on Twente which was reported as Russian naval stations. The night the invasion started there was plenty of Slavic SSB traffic. For frequencies and so on UDXF is the best place. The World of Radio mailing list is great for info on broadcast radio & TV. We are seeing an extension of broadcasts to Ukraine from the world service and some other services. WRMI is also said to be carrying Radio Ukraine English service.

In case of war any amateur radio operation is proibed. If anything like Beacons or repeaters is still running there are no supervision. Since invasion started only ucranian stations are from the Crimeia occupied zone sometime ago. 73's de Pedro CT7ARQ

I'm also lead to believe with the amount of users jumping on their hotspots to monitor reflectors and so fourth apparently this is causing overloading / connection issues, whether or not this is actually causing issues for those in Ukraine bearing in mind there is possibly little Data connection / Wi-Fi access; I don't know, but if we're not monitoring a hotspot / any kind of reflector for long periods i.e. over night while we are sound asleep in bed, its best to disconnect. We're all guilty of leaving hotspots connect and parked up on a reflector. - Its a horrible situation, there is no winners of any kind of war. Wishing them all best 73.

Interesting, not least because I'm a (lapsed) 'Ham' myself - very lapsed, flogged the last of my kit to help fund my wedding (Deep breath: composure regained) but my question is; 'What's in them red cases?' Given the lantern, I'm going with 'Survival kit' - If so, this old M3ZXM will be happy to admit I've got a 'go bag' on a bungee here with kit ready to bug out at zero notice... If it's something mundane, I don't have any survival kit and you misread this. Honest. Great video; helpful and informative!

Thanks Carl. Good videos. I've been wondering what else 'we' can do to help Ukraine as ham radio operators. One thing pops to mind. Monitoring and recording. Should a message be sent, hopefully one of us out there record it. Who knows what it could say. Wide band SDR recording would be good. So nothing is missed. Just a thought.

There’s one side that’s the aggressor, staying neutral supports them. In my experience radio amateurs are a cohort highly susceptible to propaganda. That helps to explain why the RSGB hasn’t acted in the same way as FIFA or the IOC.

I've been hearing a few CB frequency transmissions in their daytime. I'll see if I can get the better recordings translated. The 70cm and 2m bands have been clear for days on their remaining WebSDR but I'm guessing that the populated 80m band are transmissions from outside of Ukraine?

im passing this info on here... Dear friends, Early this morning, Russia started a war with Ukraine. Military facilities and airports in some cities, including Kyiv, were shelled. Ukraine was also attacked from the east from Russian territory, from the north from Belarus and from the south from the Crimea. Thanks from Ukrainian citizens to the US, UK, Canada, Poland, Baltic countries, the Czech Republic and some EU countries for help and weapons. A state of emergency has been introduced in Ukraine today It is forbidden to operate amateur stations in Ukraine for 30 days from today. Anatoly Kirilenko, UT3UY Vice President UARL

Unfortunately, the people I know do not have a working radio at all, and teenagers are far from the radio and practically receive information while the mobile Internet is working. At present, the most stable source of information is a battery-powered AM radio.

On the topic of appropriate language, Ukraine doesn't have a "The" before it anymore. Ukraine variously means "land" or "borderland". Using "The Ukraine" connotes it was the sticks of empires like Poland-Lithuania, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. "Ukraine" by itself connotes "land", which is more acceptable for its people.

I find I have to correct myself regularly when talking about (the) Ukraine. It's a generational thing, you were probably brought up hearing that description just like me. In this case, I'm making an effort to retrain myself, but I draw the line at pronouns. (/j)
