Near the beginning of this video is an 'info-card' that will take you back to the video where I did some work on this tree before the leaves opened.
The tree has now leafed-out quite well with some good new extensions some of which will be 'stopped' to encourage a 2nd flush of growth.
Thanks for watching - please subscribe and hit that like button.
(Initially, videos have been moved across from my Orchid Channel "Roger's Orchids". In future, new Bonsai Videos will only be loaded here.)

I definitely like this and clearly Mr Cat had an important point to make as well...

My two cats always have a point to make - normally making the point that their food dish is empty!

Roger, you have a really nice assortment of trees now for us to view. They are all very different in color and form. Also I especially like your new intro and ending. The music, what resembles Japanese lanterns to me,and the lovely cherry blossoms at the end. Good choice!

Originally, I had some traditional Japanese music played on original instruments. I got it off the internet as 'royalty-free' with no copyright. It was, as usual, a con. One company posts the music as though they own it and then another makes the copyright claim meaning they take all the money from your video. A copyright claim does no harm to the channel as opposed to a copyright strike which is serious - 3 of those and you can get your channel deleted.

I do a partial defoliation and cut back the tips pinching back the second flush that activates the dormant buds in the second flush of growth.. it worked well for my last year when I got a large flush and a second flush of smaller leaves.

I'm still getting mine to grow the branches to the 'size' I want for the overall shape.

That looks really nice Roger, I have seen a beech on some spare land were I walk my dog very similiar in size and shape... Think I might have to collect it. I have read diffrent opinions on collecting Beech, some say mid autumn 4 weeks after leaf fall, other say spring mid march.. What are your thoughts on this please..

I was told by a professional Bonsai Nursery owner (and friend), that with deciduous trees, the best time to report or disturb the roots for what ever reason is just as the buds start to swell in Spring. At this time, all the 'goodness' that was taken back in in the Autumn to the base of the tree has now moved up to push the buds open so there is less going on in the roots. Once the tree comes back into leaf and starts to feed itself, the roots begin to grow - they would then be in nice fresh media.

Love the bonsai videos! Question: would an aspen work as a bonsai? I have a little seedling that popped up in a pot outdoors. I don't dare plant it in the ground, as it would become invasive.
@RogersGardenandBonsai
@RogersGardenandBonsai 2 года назад
Could do. It's all about the leaf size compared to the overall size of the Bonsai. The idea is to make the leaves look as small as possible as it gives the impression of a large mature tree.

So that's the secret.....take a big tree. I've been looking around for a decent size seedling but can't find any 😁

Many think that seedlings collected from a forest are good but in reality, they are often tall and thin where they reach for the light. Craggy rocky wind-swept mountain-sides produce some really good naturally dwarfed 20 year old trees with great trunks that are just a few feet tall - mainly Pines, Hawthorn and Junipers. More mature trees will have better trunks to start with but often have no lower branches. I know someone who used to cut off wild trees a few feet from the ground and go back 2 years later to see what branches had grown?

They are slightly staggered so should be ok.
