Older dogs have to have their glands expressed often. They get foul gas that stinks up the whole house....especially at bed time. My 18 year old lab was awful. The vet had us do it every other day >_

It sounds like you’ve had plenty of experience-would u mind elaborating a bit? 🤢 I’m pretty sure I’ll have to dig deep on this one (mentally). If I can get beyond the gross factor Im pretty sure my dog would greatly appreciate the help. Taking him to the vet stresses him out SO MUCH. He’s 11 & doesn’t deserve the additional trauma of a doctor visit for something this simple. Can you offer any advice?

That was so very helpful. Thank you. I'm in my 70's and have had dogs since childhood and had never heard of this until last year when I adopted a 9 y.o. male toy poodle who exhibited that scooting behavior. My vet used the term ""anal gland expression" and explained a little bit but watching it with your explanation is really appreciated.

Same here - I'm 71 here in Australia and only now I think our poodles both have anal gland issues (licking the area). My previous dogs have not had this to my knowledge.

No, Penny needs an owner who will love her enough to stop feeding her too much and place her on a weight reduction diet. Penny's owner needs to care enough to get outside with her and exercise her and exercise her until she loses some weight. Allowing one's dog to become so obese , is not an act of love. Exercising your dog is an act of love. Our husky was never overweight and she was exercised constantly and placed on the specific diet that our veterinarian prescribed for her. She never had to have her glands expressed by the veterinarian. She lived 16 years and she was extremely active until one week before she died.

Good for you keeping your dog in good shape and getting such a good age with her/him. My mixed breed has been really healthy, never overweight as he will stop eating when he has had enough. He is 19 years old and still going strong, even though he is almost completely blind and a little unsteady on his back legs. He's happy and enjoying his old age..🧘🏻‍♀️🐕🫂🪻💞💜✨️

I fully agree with you Tina. I have a 15 year old Rat Terrier girl who has very active anal glands. They charge $27.00 to do this procedure at the vets office and that’s if you can get an appointment when it’s needed. My girl has to have it done 1-2 times a month. The vet is aware of this and we know we are just trying to keep her comfortable. They truly are uncomfortable when they are full and while she doesn’t enjoy it, she knows Mom is easy and I believe she appreciates the relief. 🤘🏼🤍

You make it look so easy. I regret not having the surgery for my dog Daisy. She has had a lifetime of foul-smelling scoots across my rugs and floors. Daisy has also scooted in the backyard and there have been times that she gets caked with mud and smells awful. Keep teaching because this is important. Daisy is now 13 and a half years old so the procedure for her is not on the table because of her age.

Years ago a vet expressed my dachshunds anal glands and that stuff shot out of him like it had been shot out of cannon. It hit the wall and slid down and the smell that permeated that tiny exam room can only be described as the most virulent scent from the bowels of hell. I started gagging while the vet tech start spraying some disenfectant all around the room. I will never forget it but can now look back on it with some humor.

My yellow lab had a blow out and I never knew what she was going thru! After that I did the glands at least every 2 weeks, and she was fine. It's not hard to do, like the size of a grape. Gentle squeeze and you can feel it pop.

This makes me even more impressed by my vet. We came because one of our young cats, who recently got neutered, was peeing everywhere. He’s usually a well behaved kitty, so I knew something was off. Within 5 minutes she’d figured out the problem and sent us on our way. She’d expressed the glands on her own within seconds.

I was taught by a veterinarian that i worked with to never express a dogs anal glands from squeezing on the outside because it can build up a lot of scar tissue and to always do it internally just like you did.

I've not heard that but it makes sense. I know that doing it from the outside doesn't always empty them, groomers do it that way and we have people all the time say "but the groomer just did that!"

Nah …. You can do it from the outside . Nothing wrong with it . It isn’t ideal but if it’s only done once a blue moon it’s not going to cause scar tissue .

So glad I caught this. I have been fortunate with my own dogs doing without this but I had been aware of issues. An Aunt who raised 8 children while working a farm inherited a son's bulldog. She grew to love it and was taking him to the vet a lot for this. She mended the grown sons jeans, made all their own catsup, canned. A depression era person so this expense was troubling for her as a conservative widow alone. I told her I was sure she could watch the vet and learn how. She told me I was right! Easy for a gal who had helped pull calves.

My mom was a dog groomer and had a shop that was built on to our house. She used to take all the dogs out to our garden to express.. she said it was good for the soil. We grew vegetables. LOL

As CVTs, we should be top shelf. We are not unlicensed assistants, we are the RNs in the vet world. And I am an RN as well, so I can actually say that. CVT school was WAY more difficult, and interesting, than RN school.

Vets normally don't do it -- a CVT or sometimes an experienced, unlicensed veterinary assistant may, unless there are complications that require flushing, etc.

At the vet my dogs nickname is ‘Boot Scootin’ Sadie’ because she is a master long distance scooter. Sadie has big and overactive anal glands due to allergies and being overweight. Since adopting her I’m proud to say she has lost 4lbs and I make sure she gets her allergy shot every 10 weeks and eats Wild Earth and only the PB treats I make at home. One way I am lucky is that her glands aren’t very stinky. I had a Boston Terrier growing up that would drop anal gland juice bombs usually in the car and it smelled like dead rotten salmon - 🤢🤮

Thank you for your knowledge and professionalism. my little buddy is needing this done every couple months and he is very uneasy around anyone that isn’t me or his momma. I’ve read online that this little issue can be caused by not having enough fiber in his diet and he will start scooting when he needs this done. He gets so upset when anyone comes near him that he doesn’t know that they put a muzzle on him and I can tell that he is nowhere near as relaxed as penny in your video. Should I perform this at home where he is more relaxed and should I be changing his diet. He is a chiwahwah and he is a year old.

I just want to say thank you for this video. I have had to reference it numerous times during the pandemic lockdown, and I appreciated the complete start to finish aspect including supply gathering and examination instruction (and staying out of the splash zone lol). Only thing I would add to the supply list is bleach and a candle, bc I decided to perform this procedure in my bathtub, and the bleach/candle combo helps clear the smell faster so the next person using it can breath! It’s a totally disgusting procedure, but thanks to your guidance, my doggo and I are closer than ever. 😆 #NoMoreBootScootNBoogie

My blue heeler was scootching all the time. After numerous trips to the vet for anal gland expression, someone recommended that I add bite size plain shredded wheat to her diet. It totally worked.

@@ronjohnson9342 I mix eight bite size plain shredded wheat into her food. I also switched to high quality food. Honest Kitchen dehydrated chicken and veg, also the refrigerated meat mixture rolls, and I add a raw egg on top now and then.

I heard you say that if it's overly painful to stop. That's the way I want it for dogs but so far 2 vets offices and both continue to put dogs thru way too much pain, as in my dog. I was holding her and we both got hurt. She is terrified of vets and I really do not wonder why. Moved to another vet's office and her stance is "that's what we do". Looking for another vet in this small town. Thanks for listening.

Aww looks like my old girl tilly. I had to do this on her often and the vet showed me how to do it. They also suggested a warm wet wash cloth, cover the area push in a bit and squeeze or do it while bathing your dog. You'll know if it worked because you'll definitely smell it.

I thought my dog was having Seizers or was diabetic because of his behavior and waking up at night scared. Turned out he needed this and a better diet. I was relieved 😌

Thank you. This is a great day for Penny! I used to have to do this every month for my big bassett dachshund. We have her pumpkin and sweet potato to make her stool harder. Great very tech here! Job well done.

Why do so many vet techs not use waterless shampoo correctly? It says on the label, "Directions for Use: Wet the hair of the area to be cleaned thoroughly with QuikClean Waterless Shampoo and massage well until a light cleansing foam appears. Use a sponge on the face. Dry with a soft, absorbent towel - then simply brush, comb or blow dry." You should always wet the hair and the with a gloved hand massage until you have a good lather, this is what gets the stains, dirt, mess out of the hairs Then you get your towel to DRY the area. The should have called it a "No-Rinse" shampoo!
