Seems pretty great. I use the Elysia Karacter rack unit and I’ve been really happy with that. Different flavor of saturation, but it’s great.

I have had the plugin for a while but haven't used it because I think I was using it to aggressively. 😮 After seeing your video I'm going to revisit it. I mostly use it in mixing to add bite, but I need to use it in better ways as you have effectively demonstrated. 🙏 👍 Thanks 🙏 👍

Try this when using the plugin. Set the pentode and triode to 12 o'clock. Don't touch these and just use the parallel mix. If you need to add highs, lows or both set to it and blend it till you get the desired sound.

I have the hardware and LOVE. Sometimes I also enjoy using the high saturation trick more extremely and then following it with EQ to bring back the lost low end. This helps saturate highs without altering eq mix balance which can also be cool. I find that this sounds better at times than simply using the flat setting on HG2. I do this in a situation where I want saturated highs but don't want the eq balance to change so much and I don't want crunchy lows. I often like the sound of crunchy top and clean low. BTW this is in mixing for me.

That review really shows what it can do. It saturates in a way that's really smooth and blends incredibly well. The plugin seems to get more forward and in your face with settings like you used here. I'm debating about getting this or the Portico II to do the saturation. Seems like the saturation in the Portico is just on or off. It's all the other settings that can be adjusted more finely. Suppose I can try both from Access Analog once my Shadow Hills is here tomorrow. Or maybe wait until the Stamchild MKII is here and I finish a deal for the Buzz Req and/or the Alpha.

The Portico has a mix knob for the saturation, so you do have a bit of control. I find it to be very different to the HG-2

@@AudioAnimalsStudio Guess I can try both at AA. My chain could end up like Black Box--->Fusion w/out Vintage Drive--->Buzz Req 2.2 (Weiss Eq1 or SPL PQ plugin until it arrives) ---->Shadow Hills--->Pro Q2. Not sure where I would end up putting that new Stamchild in a week or two or the Alpha should I close a deal on that one. Of course, if I could get the Portico II and Black Box, that would be ideal. I'm not sure how much I'll invest given all this Atmos stuff. I feel like Atmos will come down like a house of cards if the labels and manufacturers make it too expensive to adopt for artists, studios, and consumers. If it becomes reasonable in cost soon, then I can see it displacing stereo until the next innovation comes along.

@@AudioAnimalsStudioalright, you wanted me to let you know what I found out about an M/S hardware version of the HG-2. They got back to me. He didn’t give specifics, but it sounds like they are working on something and something like that would still be at least a couple years out. He did mention they are coming out with their HG-Q (on their website) at the “top of the year.” I assume that means sometime in the winter. It looks like a cool eq, but we will see.

Hi Paul, I'm considering purchasing either HG-2 or two of Roger Mayer 456HD (500 series) for mixbus processing/mastering. If you were to choose one which would you choose/recommend and why?

The two are very different. I have both in the same chain and don't use either in the same way. I'd recommend the HG2.

Any thoughts on this vs the RND Master Bus Transformer? I have that already and wondering if there's a lot of overlap, or if you see them working together. Also, where do you put your HG-2 in your chain? Thanks for all the great reviews by the way!

They don't overlap. Sound totally different. Work great together. I use them both in the same chain at different stages. I use the HG-2 at the start of the chain.

Imagine if they made a hardware version with all of the features of the M/S version of the plugin. I think that could be the new standard for mixing and master saturation. I hope they are working on one.

@aviatedviewssound4798 to be honest they do sound quite different. One thing the digital world hasn't got down yet is saturation like in the analogue world.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio Two tube based hardwares won't ever sound identical but this plugin last time i remember which i did compare to the hardware was very close, i got closer by oversampling it and getting rid of the aliasing. There's a lot of plugin who don't nail the sound character of the hardware but this one does specially when you oversample it in reaper for example. it gets me 99% there, it's just lacking some depth which i think is due to the delay introduced in analog hardware.

Question. Maybe for a video? You have a very big Mastering Chain. Do you always use the whole chain? Or is there a risk that you add too much analog coloring.

It's very different. Silk red is crisper, silk blue thinner and the saturation is a lot rounder on the HG2. The two work very well together.

I had this too, too much tube glow can get blurry sounding too me so I only like using minimal devices. I prefer the mastering version of the manley vari mu for tube sound right now. An unfairchild one day.

Now that's a video we can put to the test. We'll put both plugin and hardware through plugin doctor, match the curves and see if you are in fact correct. Keep an eye out for that video. I'll be sure to mention you.

Thanks, I an being a bit facetious, I can hear the harmonics it is adding, but at the amounts this guy is actually using in the mix, it sounds basically the same as the dry signal with a bit more gain. @@AudioAnimalsStudio

@artifactingreality only one way to find out if this claim is accurate. I always like to test these things and come back with facts everyone can learn from.
