I have really enjoyed this. I myself have been reducing my stationery since last year. I just found that I don’t use all of the things that I have and watching a lot of social media causes me to buy things things that I don’t even like or need so I needed to take a step back. But now that I know this watching people who have huge collections of stationery actually deters me from buying all the things lol

Loved this. Really like how content you sound, as you are totally enjoying the 2 tn's which serve you well. I believe that less exposure to others' planning processes which may be very different from one's own yields a kind of peace. It seems as if slow & intentional living has finally influenced the planner sphere, after a couple years of chaos. I have decided to use only a minimal amount of decor, but from a few specific vendors and to become skilled in honing my own aesthetic, not copying someone else's. BTW, when you have the supplies that you love visible, it will probably give you great joy. Always enjoy your thoughtful and relatable posts. TFS.

Very wise advice! I love setting up my supplies in a little display on my desk and I agree that it helps a lot with not over-accumulating stuff and appreciating/making use of what I have already!!

This was a great video and chat! I loved how you touched on a few different things that I’ve been thinking about over the last little while. I’ve found social media use directly contributed to my over spending in some areas and found that with the decrease in social media use it was way easier to mindfully spend. Looking forward to future chats 😊

Really enjoyed this chat, especially hearing your thoughts on consumerism. I am thinking about this a lot as I come out of a rather major experimental phase and I’m realising where I want to spend my money (stickers and stamps that bring me joy when I decorate my pages) over where I am spending (testing new notebooks that end up in the notebook graveyard). Your handwriting is so neat and beautiful too. Thank you for sharing!
@KaitlinGrey

Evaluating what items you use and enjoy is such a good point when it comes to spending mindfully! For me, I’ve been cutting back on stickers besides a select few since I found I really don’t use the majority of them

I really appreciate hearing everyone's thoughts on this. For the longest time, my journal system consisted of the same notebook (A5 Leuchtturm), one pen and one brush pen and some watercolors, and that was basically it. I've only recently started amassing a larger stationery collection, trying new notebooks and stickers and materials and tools, and it's a lot of fun but it also really can be a slippery slope to suddenly having so much more than you can use / overspending--not to mention that terrible restless feeling you get that you need to try something else, that the perfect system is waiting for you out there if you can only switch enough times... I try to remind myself often of how content I was for YEARS just using that very very minimal set of supplies, and that at its heart the hobby is, for me, about the practice of writing and drawing first and foremost, not primarily about all the stuff you can buy (as fun as the stuff can be). So it's nice to hear about how others try to be mindful of their consumption habits too! Thanks Kaitlin + others for your thoughts.

You nailed it on the head, at the end of the day the most important part of planning and journalling is using them (and I would also add, enjoying them). Also, for me, last year when I was hopping into to different systems every couple of months I noticed at the end of the year when I tried to look back, my entries were fragmented across multiple notebooks which made it hard to go through and see what happened.

I've been on my instagram less and less because of the stationery consumerism. I've been buying so much that i totally forgot using a lot of them. The fountain pen consumerism is also huge in the community. I've bought 2 fountain pens so far this year which is quite an improvement for me. I think i've reached the point where fomo can't get me anymore because i'm overwhelmed by the amount of my possessions.

I really love those casual talks in video! I hope you'll do some others in the future ❤ i totally agree with you and have had a similar time of reducing my stationery too, since December. I've coped with the pandemic and my end of phd by impulsively purchasing a ways too big stationery collection. The positive point is that i discovered things i love, like my tn system i'm using for the 3rd year in a row, but i also really spent too much on brands i ended up not liking that much. I'm now reselling a lot of things and donated some too. I also took a bit of distance with social medias and RU-vid, and i tend to not watch anymore content creators who are "overselling" their affiliates links. I've also blacklisted some brands that have a very aggressive selling techniques. And just like you, i'm currently using what i have and keep track of how i can use what i already own =) My set up is similar to yours : 2 TN, one regular (my bullet journal) and one passport (the one in which i take notes of everything when I'm on the go, especially in public transport). I've resold or donated everything else and put the money on a savings pot to fund a trip to Japan ❤

I’m so glad you enjoyed the format, I really liked making it too so I’m definitely going to make more! That’s such a good way to make it a learn and grow situation vs guilting yourself about all the stuff you purchased. I’m glad your enjoying your current system and stationery collection 💕

Loved this video, specially the topic of consumption. Even though I am new in terms of stationary consumption , I have acquired much due to the fact of social media. I do like the idea of rewarding yourself with a special size box to put all your items. I am in the process of letting go of think that I like but don’t use. Thanks for the video.

Thank you friend, I'm glad you enjoyed. I feel you on social media enabling purchases, I feel like it's so easy to fall into purchasing things for your fantasy self vs what you actually need and would use.

I have a lot of old stationery I’ve been holding on to for whatever reason that I don’t use and don’t really love, and a small amount of new stationery that I love and use often. I’m currently struggling with having to let some of the old stuff go due to moving; I’m thinking if I make a conscious effort to use some of it, and I don’t get to something, that I’ll have to move it along. It’s very interesting to see the difference between things I like, and things I love and use regularly. I’m very proud of myself for the progress I’ve made in limiting my purchases- the next thing to tackle is what I don’t use or love completely! Similar to you, I really like the idea of having a small collection of things that I love and use regularly, but I struggle with the idea of “wasting things” by getting rid of things I don’t use. This is such an important conversation to have, especially with how constantly consumerism is pushed onto us. It’s so interesting to see where others are at in their own journey with their relationship with stuff 💕

I’ve had similar feelings and what I’ve found has helped is re-framing ‘getting rid of’ to ‘rehoming’ either to other folks who like stationery or to charity organization who would use the supplies

Great video! I really loved to see how you journaled about your trips, it looks really simple but still has fun photos and ephemera tipped it. In my own journal last year I went overboard with trying to create perfect spreads for my trips which just made me procrastinate on creating them, so I think I might try simplifying the process this year. Also loved the discussion on planner consumerism, I'm a big proponent of re-using old unfinished notebooks, I find it's really cool to see how my journaling style has changed in one book. And I wholeheartedly agree on your point about instagram, it always feels like everyone is trying to sell you something which is just exhausting. Anyway, take care!)

Really enjoying the chat. I have found that this year I'm also shrinking my supplies, stickers, especially. I'm happy how well that's been going. Can you share which planner blogs you follow? Or at least where? (WordPress?) Thanks.

I absolutely love your print style in your journaling. How did you learn to do that? Or is that your natural print writing style?

Thank you! Mostly practice, but my writing has gotten neater in the last year because I started writing on the bottom line of the grid squares (previously I wrote between the top and bottom line if that makes sense). Also I used a smaller grid for a while (hobonichi grid) which caused me to make my letters a bit more compact

One more note: maybe you could try a similar sized box or basket to the box you are thinking of getting, and if you find yourself comfortable with that amount of space, then look for that special box. Something I like that Cindy points out is how your supplies do deteriorate after a while even if you're not using them. It makes me decide to use things or re-home them more quickly rather than hang onto them too long. It's nice to keep things in useful circulation with friends who can appreciate the "new to them" supplies.

That's a great point! Ok so for blog recommendations, I'm still looking for some myself but the ones I'm currently enjoying are the Wonderpens blog, the Traveler's company USA blog and Notebook Stories (a newer discovery). There are a bunch more blog which focus more on product reviews, but I don't really read those since that's not really the type of content I enjoy

@@KaitlinGrey Oh! Great! I am familiar with Traveler's Company and Notebook Stories, but not Wonderpens. Thank you! You know, it might be nice to add a resource list in your Community tab. Not trying to make work for you though, lol. It's just a thought. Current blogs are harder to find nowadays. I was just thinking of one to share with you and her last post was 2019. Philofaxy is still up and running. They are more ring-planner focused, obviously, but they link to lots of folks with both blogs and videos. You may find some treasures there!
