In my recently taught NYU/CALA course on the history and cultural significance of the cabaret art form (Life is A Cabaret, Spring 2021), I presented the students with an excerpt from the French movie, Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974). The excerpt, briefly introduced by me via ZOOM, shows a scene in which the character Julie, played by Dominique Labourier, auditions for a couple of producers in a small Montmartre cabaret and delivers what is effectively a complete deconstruction of the genre.

I just love this and the whole film - only just discovered it after nearly 50 years.

I love this film. This is my favourite scene in the film. It sums the whole film up in just a few minutes.

Thank you with inexpressible praise for your recital of Tomas Mann's, Tonio Kroger at SoundCloud. It's incredibly good. Had I missed, a word, "eliminated" in the dialogue though, in chapter four? I seem to remember that word? In another world and time you'd be a smash success as it a bit baffling, your "play counts" here? I've been to Manhattan in Grunge years and spent time at my motel with Van Gogh prints near Dewitt Clinton Park, and at a second story Herald Square Coffee shop. My songs are Missing Link Us. On another subject, you could commit artists blasphemy and recite audibly some JD Salinger novels? Or H.F.M. Prescott's, Mary Tudor, The Spanish Tudor. It does gets very rank. So difficult a read, a bit? My direct ancestor was in the court and I fancy her dialogue as it could of been my ancestor, John Wright VI, and even wrote my own version of a song, Queen Ann Boleyn, found upon Dave That's Not My Toe.

@@isengart Please recite Mayor Of Castorbridge by Thomas Hardy? You'd be great, acting that also!

One of my favourite scenes. Another one is the dance of Celine and Guilou. It's also on youtube, but without sound, making it absolutely worthless.

It's the counterpart to that scene, yes. I have the DVD, luckily.

@@isengart Me too. I first had stumbled upon this film by chance on the TV and I recorded it on VHS, but IIRC it was incomplete, because I was surprised, and the VHS cassette not of the freshest quality, but the film appealed to me very much, so I was bound to buy it eventually on DVD.

Nice analysis (and it's my all-time favorite film) -- but you may want to correct the title (verbally, not easy, but at least in the text and description) -- it's Céline and Julie (not Julie and Céline) Go Boating....

Thank you for catching that!
