Dr. Marcus Lashley, director of the University of Florida Deer Lab, analyzes the progression of plant succession after a growing season fire. Some people are hesitant on conducting growing season fires for many reasons - Dr. Lashley discusses the numerous benefits to multiple wildlife species produced by conducting growing season fires. In Part 2, he analyzes 10 months post burn and 2 years post burn.

I guess the takeaway is you don’t want the landscape homogenous but at the same time don’t want succession to get too far ahead.

How often do you recommend for a growing season burn?

It depends on the site and what your overall objectives are for it - but we would say 2-4 year intervals would be pretty common for most sites. Again, depends on the objective. most of our prescribed fire sites are managed for wildlife, specifically turkey and deer and other game birds. Hope this helped! We also have a whole playlist for prescribed fire, maybe there is something of value for you in there!

@@Whitetail_Properties I've enjoyed all of them! My goals are wildlife management only. Deer Turkey and Quail. South Alabama. Mixed mature hardwoods, and pines..

@@alanwhite4839 Love to hear it! On a site like that 3 or 4 year intervals would be just fine. If you want more herbaceous plants burn every 3 and if you want more woody structure/cover burn every 4 or even 5.
