The image of the woman with a white flag in her hand being killed and her blood soaking the sand... it just creates such heartbreaking visual and those lines always seem to stick with me the most. I think because it made me "see" the scene so well with the writing. such a great and heartbreaking song.

This song is based in part on a documentary that goes into some of the horrific war stories of soldiers in Iraq. It begins with the pride of joining the Military, making friends, being a part of something bigger. It feels GOOD. But war has a way of making men do things that in any other light they find detestable. "They took off his clothes, They pissed in his hands. *I told them to stop*, but then I joined in" Even when you know something is wrong, war *so* dehumanizes the "other" that it can be easy to do things you wouldn't. Like killing another human, it's not something we would ever do in a civilian life but when we're caught up in the moment with people that want you dead, well, the outcome is predetermined. The last verse in particular gets me: "She walked through bullets and haze, I asked her to stop, I begged her to stay... She collapsed, with a flag in her hand, A flag white as snow" This was based on the story of a soldier who had been instructed to shoot anyone who walked towards their convoy, because even women and children had been weaponized as suicide bombers. It was almost a matter of necessity to ensure their survival. A woman came one day, and after she was shot they examined her and found she was approaching to sell fruits for her family. That soldier had to live with following mere orders. "And I brought home that flag, Now it gathers dust, But it's a flag that I love, It's the only flag I'll trust" Now talking about the white flag of surrender carried by the woman he shot. When your country causes you betray yourself, what else do you have left. This song was critiqued by some when it came out as being anti-soldier, but I think more than anything it's anti-war. It's not being a soldier that makes people commit attrocies, it's the dehumanization, the license to kill those you see as evil.

I think the flag in the last verse is still talking about the American flag. As in it now collects dust and what did they really accomplish, what was the purpose. and the part about it being the flag that I love, it's the only flag I trust was being done in a sarcastic way, as in blaming the protection of the flag for the things that has happened. But either way, it doesn't matter as the song is about not only the war in another country, but the war they have in their minds when they return. This song was inspired by the 2006 documentary The Ground Truth: After the Killing Ends, which focuses on soldiers' Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after returning home from war. The song tells the story of a guy who enlists in the military, figuring he'll be celebrated as a war hero after he does his duty. He ends up fighting overseas under horrific conditions, and ends up torturing a prisoner and killing a civilian under duress. When the video was released, Rise Against issued this statement: "'Hero Of War' is the story of one soldier, not all soldiers, as he battles not just the war around him, but the war that rages within. Inspired by true events, we were given the choice to either document the tribulations of these times as they unfold around us, or ignore them. To ignore these problems, in our opinion, is letting down the brave men and women who risk everything. 'Hero Of War' is our attempt to lift the stigma that surrounds everything from the skyrocketing suicide rate of troops, torture, internal sexual abuse, an under-funded VA, and the growing number of military personnel fighting Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as they return home." I do agree as I believe I've heard that Rise Against is anti-war, but that's not to say that they are anti-soldier.

@@john_thorpe that's a fair interpretation regarding the flag! It could be either the white or the American flag, with several "real" interpretations. It could absolutely be sarcastic, but also could be direct. I hardly know a veteran who doesn't stand for the American flag to this day, even if they're too scarred to get up and 'dust it off' every now and then. "It's the only flag I trust." The soldier in the story presumably would have seen the white flag before firing. Ultimately he did not trust trust it, so this line could also be a direct reflection of his actions. So many different ways to pull this one apart. Their lyrics are poetry 👌

I like Rise Against. Almost every song has something that grabs me, whether it's the whole song or just a part of it. Very relevant song nowadays.

My country's leader, Atatürk- who had to deal with western brutality in 1900, an anzac after the war saw Atatürk during one of his travels and asked: My brother has been killed by you (pointing out, Ataturk's army, why did you kill him?" And he said "You guys were to one to come from somewhere else with bad intentions to our homeland, not us" and it goes same with the united states right now, wherever a problem comes out, united states sneaking behind a rock. Sorry for you guys' loss but if you're invading to someone else's place, you cant expect them to throw roses while you're passing through

The Afghan war was warranted. We were attacked. The Iraq War wasn't. I fought in both so I have no doubt the terrorists I killed deserved it

The Supreme Art of War is too capture the enemy without ever fighting. - Art of War I love the quote from the Episode Godfellas when God says “When we do things right people will not be sure if we ever did anything at all” - Futurama

And what happened in the end? You guys permanently destroyed who attacked you guys in last few decades you guys occupied? Just its leader, and they change the leader, and they're still there with no difference, maybe even more supported by locals after they've seen brutality of usa. What's changed then? United states possibly got what it wanted from the country?

Burak, we got nothing out of Afghanistan. It was one of the few times where they actually tried helping, and didn’t. I learned this while over there, even talking to EPW’s. They know they will get smoked in a straight up fight, so….. they pull us into MOUT situations. A situation where there will be collateral damage no matter what. And US is the only country that this is trying to straddle the line of being a good guy while fighting. Most enemies have learned to just hide long enough and we will get pulled out.

When did Afghanistan attack us? Do countries have arms and legs now? Are you talking about the 9/11 hijackers?
