Justine Triet's gripping and provocative Palme d’Or winning (Best Film award at Cannes Film Festival) thriller puts the intimate complexities of a couple’s failing marriage on trial.
For the past year, Sandra (Sandra Hüller), a German writer, her French husband Samuel (Samuel Theis), and their eleven-year-old son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) have lived a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he committed suicide or was killed. Samuel’s death is treated as suspicious, and Sandra becomes the main suspect. Little by little the trial becomes not just an investigation of the circumstances of Samuel’s death, but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel’s conflicted relationship.

He blames her for not having any time to write when it was his idea to move to his hometown, he wanted to renovating the house, and he wanted to homeschool Daniel. Long analysis ahead... So, it's fascinating. On another video of this scene, folks are calling her a narcissist who at least indirectly killed her husband with the cruelty of her words here. But on this video, folks are applauding her directness. That's why this movie is so good. It's such a polarizing watch depending on your experiences. I've had a couple friends tell me she totally killed him. When I ask why they say, "Cause she's a narcissist." When I ask how so, they use this scene as a prime example. My personal take? As someone who has tried to get loved ones to believe in their own abilities, just to see them wallow and blame everyone else for their lack of movement, this scene is incredibly cathartic. It actually proved her character for me more than it indicted her. There's a kind of victimization that leaves its own victims, when we refuse to move out of fear and begin hating everyone else who does move. This speech dismantles that. It very well may have driven him to suicide. It's too direct. Too dangerous. But also too true to just chalk up to manipulation and narcissism on her end. She is a deeply flawed character, with plenty of her own problems, but my take is she has also had to defend herself to her husband so much up to this point that it boils over here. And her defensiveness with Samuel carries over into her behavior during the trial. The real tell for me that she didn't kill him? I think she really loved Samuel at the end. When Snoop joins her in bed, and she hugs him, remember her son's testimony of Samuel comparing himself to the dog. In the end, when she lays beside Snoop, it's like she's laying beside Samuel and finally appreciating him for all his flaws. Cause for all the truth in her speech, he wasn't wasted space. I don't think she would have said those things to him if she thought he was. I think because she's so flawed, and the this comes out in the trial, the movie does a good job teaching us about how one's flaws can cause doubt about them, even in their capability of murder. I wonder how many of us would be indicted if all our flaws were exposed the way hers are here. To me, it's a triumphant thing that the son chooses to clear her in his mind for all the things he learns about her. That is, if she's really innocent. :)

I don't think the directness of her words is the issue. Throughout the conversation, Sandra dismisses accountability for shared responsibilities in their relationship. The lyrics to "marry me a little" offer a great critique of this sort of selfishness. She refuses to deal with the consequences of this avoidance, dumping it all at Samuel's feet and attempting to gaslighting him into believing that his personality flaws are to be blamed for all of their relationship issues. While this scene may seem powerful because Samuel never argues back, one should keep in mind that this is a random cross-section from a recurring conversation. I believe this is an intentionally deceptive framing. Like as not, Samuel was unwilling to repeat his arguments for the umpteenth time, or simply lacked the energy to repeat himself due to his depression. According to Sandra, the recording ends with Samuel hitting himself. Unless we take her at her word, this becomes a perfect metaphor for how narcissists present and justify narcissistic abuse.

This is just one fraction of the entire fight scene which is an absolute MASTERPIECE of writing and performance. It is the most raw, believable and relatable argument I've ever seen in a movie. So my dear mother and I watched it... and honestly? We think the mom did it. Aside from the very half way explanations she gave in court for seeing other people it was how she responded after she was aquitted that really set it off for us. The mom wants to go drink and celebrate. And her kid is waiting for her at home until he can't keep his eyes open. If that were me, or anyone else I cared about I'm home in an instant. I want to be with the person I love most. Not go out celebrating. It just felt so self-centered and selfish. Yes the mother in the movie does care for her son but only to an extent. At most, he's incidental. And that was the real downer of all of this. He should have turned her in.

Maybe it's all "true", but this is no way to deal with someone who is riddled with anxiety and maybe depression. This is like killing with words... Better would be to work out the root causes of his anxiety and procrastination, and whether writing is truly after all his real calling... But that would require love and humility and tenderness.... Not really the qualities of what in the end is a murderer. (If she didn't kill him directly -which she did - she killed him with words and pushed him to suicide. This is NOT Love. Love has nothing to do with death. These are the words of a narcissist who only cares about self empowerment. Not the emporwement of the other as well as her own. The fact that she is a woman does not change this dynamic, it's a genderless dynamic, if you are not saddened/concerned by the lack of empowerment of the people in ur life then ur not kind, ur not loving. He might be a fake "nice guy", but she's also a fake "feminist" since she doesn't allow her man to be vulnerable and insecure, in fact she has espoused mostly the worst of masculine values and of feminine values) He's maybe a "monster" but so is she, and a bigger one. Same thing for Amber Heard and Depp...

@@aiai-j7i she was not carrying him so much more than he carried her. Gave her a child and a beautiful house, was a successful teacher at top uni. He just created a knot in his mind on which he tripped. Truth is she just lost respect for him because he wasn't 'manly' enough, a long time ago and he couldn't stand her 'competition' which was a bit sucky but not the end of the world... But she'll never admit it , that it was her fault she lost respect for him being weak, instead it's all his fault for being macho, because it goes against the egalitarian trope which they fancied themselves in... She is as willing to paint herself as a victim as he is and unwilling to compromise and walk the extra mile together, which is love and marriage... Besides it's not as if he was a "bad guy", he was a fine specimen, just a bit narcissistic and insecure... As for her, I highly doubt she's such a great novelist after all, probably no Tolstoï nor Balzac or Jane Austen, just a successful cynical hack who writes very quickly and coldly calculated naff... She lost it very quickly and acted like an extremely cold calculating killer just because he derailed one of her little self indulgent bisexual leaning little cheating sprees (with a very vulgar song granted). Everyone will say what a fantastic feminist movie it is. But it's a double edged sword. It's also an indictment of this pseudo equalitarian discourse and what little generosity and great amount of narcissism there is behind all these fake narratives. Truth is she was wrong for him and she's a killer. That's why she'll end up with the dog ultimately because she's a sick animal. She also gets the lawyer simp, but she will never be drawn to him either since he's an even cheaper weaker version of her husband. Poor blind woman.
