Man, I haven't seen a movie this smart in a long time. Such artistry this film is. And, it's great that you mentioned the humor in it. Like, (mild spoiler) the judge's reaction to the kid's final testimony got me (and only me) to laugh out loud in the theater.
Sandra Huller had two very memorable and amusing supporting turns recently, in the German film I'm Your Man co-starring Dan Stevens and in Justine Triet's previous film, Sibyl starring Virginie Efira. She's great and very funny in both.
Ty kindly! That was a real labor of love. I was stuttering so intensely while recording that it required the most editing of any content I've ever created.
I don't know if she killed Samuel or not. My intuition tells me that Sandra is innocent. But has the child told the truth? Did that conversation with his father really happen? I doubt it.
No theater near me had it, and today it's finally available to rent, so I did. I just finished it. I have been waiting for this movie for so long. Now I have to find a way to watch Poor Things. Sandra was spectacular. I can see why people talked about the dog's acting now lol. I need to see behind the scenes to see how they got him to do "that".
Anatomy of a Fall sounds good, I'll try to see it when I can. From what you've said about Zone of Interest it seems like the polar opposite of Son of Saul, a great movie but really bleak too, I imagine you saw it back in the day but if you haven't definitely check it out. I haven't been to many festivals lately but I get what you mean about the benefits of seeing certain movies on its own. Sometimes when you see too many in a row you start to feel a bit tired regardless of the quality. By the way, I saw a doc called Phil Tippett: Mad Dreams and Monsters which was pretty interesting for fans of practical effects.
overrated, the prosecutor was the most unprofessional ridiculous lawyer that i can't take seriously. The whole french courtroom procedures were laughable at how the "judge" let the prosecutor make his ridiculous arguments. It was too long and slow
You’re missing the point. It’s not trying to show an accurate portrayal of a French courtroom. It’s showing how perceptions are formed, especially about women.
Saw Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest at tiff! Anatomy is so incredible - love the ambiguity of the film and ultimately how you as a viewer need to make up your mind. Huller absolutely deserves all the awards love this season. Also, Snoop in Anatomy won the Palme Dog - what a performance! Also I agree totally with ZoI - very haunting and effective in its unique portrayal of the Holocaust. I never want to see it again but I am very glad I did.
Go ahead and give Sandra the Oscar. I haven't seen the other films but I'll say it anyway. The boy's performance was also exceptional. That said, I'm not a fan of this trend to frame the theme of a story using a narrative ploy. Tier wrapped up a story about a couple's power dynamics and how they are perceived in a murder mystery/ courtroom drama. Yes the courtroom drama upped the narrative stakes in the examination of their marriage, but the film wasn't really about a possible murder. The mechanics of Samuel's death, uninteresting as they were, become less important as the story progresses. The relationship becomes the focus. The mystery was never solved but it didn't really matter because at the end it becomes an afterthought. I gave up trying to imagine how she might have done it and how she keep herself together if she had. So at the end I was left with the question, why even use the murder mystery frame? Yes it heightens the drama but if felt like a gimmick. Past Lives followed this pattern. This movie wasn't a tragic love story; it was about pining over lost youth and the accompanying regret told from an immigrant's perspective.
Finally got to see this movie in the theater. I really enjoyed it. All the acting was fantastic, great story, but it definitely felt a little to long. I was also SO intrigued by their legal system and how the court system worked.
It was fascinating but absolutely grim and relentless. It was tough to sit through it after watching a long feature and a short before it. I feel like I need to watch The Zone of Interest for a second time when I'm fresh and alert before I can give it a fair review.
