Note: This guide is for the original RG35XX, not the Plus or H or 2024 edition. If you find yourself having any performance issues, try enabling Threaded Performance in RetroArch. In-game, menu key + X, B to back to Main Menu, Settings, Video, Threaded Video then B twice to Main Menu, Quick Menu, Overrides, Save Core Overrides. This is buggy - it may save for you, it may not, if you open another game and don't see it, there's another way to change this. On your operating system SD card (so slot 1 for those using two), go into the CFW folder, retroarch, .retroarch, config, go into the folder of the core you want, and then open the .cfg file with Notepad. Add a new line and type video_threaded = "true". Close and save, pop the SD card back into the device and Threaded Video should be enabled for that core. Do this for any core you're having performance issues with.
I've found that the Threaded Video option saves if you change it directly from RetroArch (No cores) at the right side of the main menu of GarlicOS. Make sure "save at quitting Retro-arch" is enable. In my case I figured that the overrides option was disabling Threaded Video giving me poor performance in PS1 games. I've only disable Threaded Video when playing some fast pace SNES games though HDMI out put as it may cause some latency and a bit of screen tearing because some of these emulators were designed to work on one core. The device, however, seems to be powerful enough to run SNES games on just one core, or at least the games I play.
I recently purchased the RG35XX - And while waiting for it to come in the post, I've been looking at GarlicOS setup videos - I must say this is hands down the best guide I have seen! Kudos to you!

I have been using mine for 2 days, I am very pleased with this equipment, I have 200 games on Playstation1 CORE, all of them that I checked run at full 60fps synchronization without frame drops (on the "balanced" CPU power management), it is great portable equipment for little money

very useful guide, thanks! the only things i'd add that i struggled to figure out from this were: - taking an SD card out of the ambernic device consists of pushing it in so it pops out - holding menu and H is how to enter retroarch from inside a game after setting up the device with garlic os

The one SD card method is the best, just buy a microSD card for 9-11 dollars with a capacity of 128GB and have everything on one. For the test, I did this, and in the second free microSD port I added a Kingston 256GB Canvas Go Plus card, on which I placed 100 GB of music in MP3 format, of course the folders were sorted as they used to be on HDD drives. My rg35xx has a music player (modification), initially I had the idea to put my 200GB music library on the second card, but after a few hours of listening to music through the 3.5 jack, I decided that I would rather not use the device as an mp3 player, but it is possible. A 256GB card works as a second slot without any problems. In the first card slot I had a Patriot EP V30, 128GB. I'm shocked that this little wonder with such limited guts can handle such large volumes
When you said "Go see your loved ones" during the Skraper, I went to my parents' house, ate dinner with my family, then watched the Texas Rangers win game one of series 2. Came home, and Skraper was done! :)
I just got my purple RG last Friday abs have been tinkering with it all weekend. Some one made a theme and icon swapper that runs in GarlicOS, so you don’t have to take your sd card out to change either of those. Problem I’m having is getting the video folder to show in the UI. I cannot find anything that explains it, except in very vague blurbs. Driving me nuts. Finally got my ScummVM and Ports folders sorted so that they work, and now this. But man, it’s such a great little system now that I changed the OS. Thanks for the video. The skraper section was very helpful.

Also weak level of tech here😁 and good but not enough knowing of English language, so this guide didn't helped me at all. Sad but true. I have many issues with my sons device: Power on (must reset a few times before it starts), Blocade of the some of the games (and they have never deblocades) and other issues...
thank you for this video Joey, very helpful and much easier to follow for me than written guides. I did run into issues where MiniPartition Tool wouldn't let me Extend partition because it wanted me to pay for a full version, so just used EaseUS Partition instead. Other than that, smooth sailing! :) Hopefully Black Seraph works some more on GarlicOS but I have the feeling he's moved onto the newer releases from Anbernic :(
FULL VERSION PAYMENT FIX - Just tried reinstalling MiniPartition Wizard without selecting "free trial" during installation and just selected "free", it worked and didn't ask me to register and pay for the full version :)

Great guide! I came here for the Box art part, currently installing the images and holy hell this will take a WHILE. Im currently 30 mins in and i have only installed 400/3236 SNES images. And thats only 1 console. 34 consoles after that. I think it will take more than a day for me. How long did this part take for you?
Mine took me an hour or two, but I have a much smaller rom collection. Skraper is limited by those server connections, you can pay them a one time fee of $10 to get 10 IIRC which will significantly speed things up for you.

It’s a little wasted space. But you can get a libertero 7z collection or whatever internet archives . Just put in corresponding folder roms >gba> imgs or roms > ps> imgs . And once it is in you never have to look for boxart for any rom you ever put in there again! 128 giggles highly recommended. (for future readers)
I rather still be able to search for my games. That’s the only thing. That and I like stock with this device compared to most. Even if simplistic. I do however enjoy your video!
I finally have the courage to migrate to Garlic OS, since my stock firmware was not keeping the in-game saves for snes for some reason (this only happened in Snes) i hope this bring the whole package. I must say I love You!
Have you had any trouble with the preloaded ROMS since moving to Garlic OS? I was told the preloaded ones are kind of bad and I would need to build my own ROM library for the console but I feel less confident doing that
@@A2daM2daZ You gonna have to re-build your own Iibrary anyway because the data on the original sd card comes encryptted. Besides the sd card which comes within the system is really cheap.
@@A2daM2daZ My best hint is to install Garlic on a new card. Use the 2 cards setup. One for the system and others for games only. You can add games and systems as You wish. You don't need to start your library from scratch. Search for down Ioads on discussion threads. Good luck!
Is it possible to also move the safe states for the Games from the original pre-installed OS of the RG35XX to GarlicOS? Will I have less lag while playing GB or GBC games with GarlicOS when compared to the pre-installed OS?

every anbernic device I've ordered from anbernic themselves AND from random aliexpress sellers, have had kioxia micro sd cards. they have never failed on me in the past 2 years that I've been using them. imaging new OS updates or forks every other month. are 3rd party retailers swapping them with shittier cards?

Great explanation ! But when i do scraping foe like PS games, i get a lot of "Http request failed with status code 502". Scraping time showed more then a day to finish.
You say that BIOS files need to be added "from zip file from the website you showed earlier" but I do not see it mentioned before in the video and I looked. Would you please be so kind and clarify that part? Thank you in advance.

Hello everyone! I have an issue. If i align the text for the black border artwork, the text will overlap the photos if i enter the cores app. I have to mention that i use the dualboot version of garlic.
Has anyone else noticed that the Stock OS has way better saturation than GarlicOS? I’ve tested it on 3 different machines, not sure if I just got a bad download of Garlic or need to update it or what, but it’s distracting how bad the screen looks compared to stock.

You say to not forget to assign a letter but then you label it, "ROMS!" lol wtheck! am I supposed to label it a letter or ROMS???? I'm so confused!! Hey Joey, so I made a comment without really realizing that I had made the mistake. My bad. Turns out my SD card adapter has a weird lock button. I thought that was to just lock the SD card in place so it wouldn't come out of the adapter, nope, it was to not allow any files to be moved around. I think that is what caused the issue. After scraping, nothing actually ended up happening because the lock was enabled on the card.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds honestly haven't even had the time to try again. I have to go back and start from the scraping part, and that took a while. I'll try again later tonight and let you know tomorrow if I remember ... Lol.

Getting my rg35xx+ and this video is making me video a lot less stressed to try and install garlic os but im getting confused at 9:00 on where the bios folder you’re talking about from the zipped file. I’ve never attempted to do anything like this before so i’m just very confused
Hi, thank you so much for the video! When you have to update garlic, if I use 2 sd (one for garlic and one for roms and bios), the misc folder to be replaced in which sd do I find it? Can I find it on SD 1 or SD 2?
Box Art: I'm using Scraper and I follow all steps. I aim to my sd card folders with Roms, But on the proccess always get "Zero Roms Found - Nothing to scrap" What am I missing?

(And for kinda obvious reason nobody talks about that on any tutorial) Simply, the reason was I was using Windows 7 (old schooler here lol) >< Skraper (and most handhelds installations) for some reason are only compatible with Windows 10. Having only one issue with my ROMS. All of the system folders are there, but not all of the games are in them. The only games I’m seeing are from what I initially favorited. Any recommendations to fix it?
Following the video was super helpful - BUT, for a 2 sd card setup after I create the new partition on the first sd card, I cannot move CFW onto the card - it says I am 700mb short. No clue how to fix this, can You help?
thanks for the vid. Is there a way to autosave the state with a thumbnail but leaving the "load automatically" option off? Because no way this option is being saved at all in my configuration. What can I do to save it? Because i think the OS is very cool, the only thing I do not like is the automatic load state when i turn on the console and when i load a content.
very handy guide overall! I'm running into a snag here when updating box art - when opening the settings.json file in Notepad, mine looks COMPLETELY different from yours. Mine just shows a few lines about color-guide, color-inactive, color-active, some color codes, and that's it! Any idea why that may be?

this sounds silly, but i'm very closely following the instructions: when it comes time to transfer the tiny set zipped ROMs folder to the SD card, do we really just drag and drop the ZIPPED file folder of ROMS into the SD card? no unzipping of the ROMS folder? and we should ignore the other files that come with the ROMs?
You need to unzip, you can keep the games zipped, but the entire thing needs to be unzipped and when you do that, you'll get a roms folder with subfolders inside that match the systems.
Hello! I got my RG35XX for Christmas and was super excited to setup it up and play some retro games. I followed your steps exactly, but when I put in the SD cards, my device would only boot to Android, never to GarlicOS. I tried switching the SD cards, and I actually got another SD and completely reformatted it using the steps for double SD card setup from your video, but even on the second try, the device only boots to Android and not GarlicOS. Please help!
for some reason, ps1 games with spraper did not download on my garlic os. I encountered a problem with glitches in the sd card. So I bought a new sd card. And I could only download Atari, cps1, cps2 games from the seller’s website. Now I don’t know what to buy Should I get a new SD card with the stock version and Garlic OS or download games, but no matter how much I searched I couldn’t find PS1 games
