Also, Bill, please do more of this sort of review: very casual, informative and catered around answering the relevant questions that many are constantly thinking. I appreciate your approach, style and methodology when doing these reviews. In a similar, but unique vein to Russ, you have an invaluable style and approach, and look forward to your videos, including these. As a first handheld (aside from the steam deck oled), I had the Miyoo Mini because of all the hype and promise. After about a week of use, and trying to like it, was simply too small, so I returned it. It seems that the closest thing to a Nintendo Gameboy-esk form-factor, the better it will be. This seems to be REALLY darn close. I could just shave off the analog stick so the "top" is more recessed, or something. It just has to have the right amount of battery, not be android-based, and have a d-pad primarily, and "solid enough" performance that will handle the 4:3-based retro games without burning battery, or the processor. We are SO close... just need that processor that can work up to gamecube with this form-factor (imho).
I have to disagree with the joystick take, im glad they have one on a device like this for arcade, n64, psp and dreamcast sure its not going to play the whole library but it can run enough to justify it and for dual sticks they already make the 405v.
Personally I'll be waiting for a 4" SP style model with a better chipset. I already have a RG35XX Plus and a steam deck so i'm in no hurry to grab the latest thing, I also have no use for the thumbstick, I guess they added it for the few N64 games it is able to run properly.
The AYANEO Pocket EVO and the AYANEO DMG are the last android handheld devices for me. I started buying handheld devices looking for the ultimate one, and I think I found them. I still love my Odin 2 but the OLED screen and bigger joysticks got me like yes please.
The thing that gets me about Anbernic devices is that they still don't properly support USB-PD, which honestly shouldn't even be legal in 2024. Needing to worry about having a dumb low-powered charger around to get it to work is just something I'm not willing to deal with when every other device I own can be plugged into any charger I own.
Yes! This is absolutely unacceptable and the devices should be banned for this! The cheapest Amazon fake crap can do that! Every review should shit on them!
@@ekoms108 No the problem seems to be higher charger outputs seems to fry anbernic devices, so its more from a fragility viewpoint. They don't need to charge super fast they just need to be able to handle modern phone chargers properly.
I agree with this, I have one white cord that I personally know is a 5 V cord. I use that plugged into my computer to charge these devices. But it is incredibly annoying that I can’t just use whatever USB-C cord that I have nearby. That’s the whole point of USB-C.
A soda can, a deck of cards and a smartphone should be of help for those who don't already have a retro handheld. Personally, I have an older RG351V to sell to make way for this bigger screen device in virtually the same footprint. Strange how that model had the best D-Pad IMO and Russ said this RG40XXV is the best. The RG40XXH supposedly has a crappy D-Pad? You would think they would be the same.
@@NerdNest lol it was funny because everything you compared it to I don't have ..I have no idea how big that iPhone is . And while I have an idea how big an NES cart is it's been decades since holding one .. same could be said for the GBA advance. 😅
Love the video! For what it’s worth, I subscribed for this kind of content. Lol. Looking at your channel, I’ll be hanging around for a lot more. Cheers!
Hey NerdNest, I love how you answered the question about if this is the one based on your emulation interests as well as the ergonomics. Thank you for the recommendations. I would be very interested in learning the best device for each era of emulation. There are so many devices nowdays it's hard to choose, and a lot of them are even though all retro systems are not. What would you recommend for someone who is more interested in PS1/PS2 emulation? What about other types of emulation? Maybe an idea for a future video.
the shoryuken portion of the video seems like its user error, just watching your inputs. SF2 is pretty strict on its inputs and even I have trouble reliably doing shoryukens in it.
Would be very interested in knowing how the streetfighter test compares with the rg35xxsp *for you*. I couldn’t get even the fireballs to land super reliably on the sp and I love SF2 :)
The white is sexy as hell for a budget device! 4inch makes a huge difference compared to 3.5 to me. I have a 405m and I have been telling anyone who will listen that 4inch is the way to go. It makes 4:3 stuff look amazing but is still big enough for psp to look good on it as well.
I still say this is not the one. The joystick could be better and I think with other devices having better sticks out there that Ambernic will fall in some time down the line. I'm always on the fence between horizontal and vertical but I think vertical is the way... Just not there yet.
I just ordered this from Anbernic for $60+$10 shipping, they shipped right away. I like the H, I'm getting this V for my son, he likes the all white. The V is advertised with a ultra narrow bezel, is it really? Is it narrower than the H??
Not bad! I think you have a 351V, shoulda compared it to it's spiritual predecessor. :) What I love about it, it's really not much larger than the 351V and I LOVE mine lol. Think I'll pick this lil one up.
Man, the RG40XXV is *almost* what I am looking for :/ I cant enjoy the Miyoo Mini+ and prefer about the size of the OG Gameboy. I wish the XXV would be more like the Analogue Pocket, without a joystick, even L1+R2 for SNES isnt necessary. IMO a vertical handheld should be focus on GB/GBC/NES without any compromise, for SNES/N64/PS1 upwards or those who wanna play *everything* with one device choose a horizontal handheld anyways.
paid 100 for the version with 16000 games and the analog is a little janky and tried playing buus fury and gave me an error message saying it can't run the full game also having an issue where it’ll start charging and then stop and I have to unplug it and reset just to get it continue charging but then it stops again
Joystick is great for Atari games. But I don't see people running these titles during their reviews. Weird. River Raid would be best pick for the test.
\Man the only thing this device needs is an LED screen. The battery life would be higher, it would be lighter, blacks would be perfect. Just my opinion, but LCD should be more expensive to produce at this point in 2024, compared to LED. I'd be willing to see this being $100 with an LED panel. Everything else is really great: D-pad centric, the analog is there for, if anything, quick-access shortcuts that would be useful for emulation (like hotkey combo's with Retroarch). Everything else looks REALLY great on this device... its SO CLOSE! To think Anbernic doesn't know that by now to make THE handheld to buy... well, it would only mean Anbernic can't make much money by having a constant flow of future handhelds that have just ONE thing missing to make it supreme....
The 40XXV should have simply been a larger screened 35XX+ with the same colour options and no crap joystick. These hybrids spoil the aesthetic, pocketabilty and the gaming experience.
kinda wished you'd have both the device playing the same thing when you answered about comparing it. just to make the differences more clear but still a good video. Thanks!!
The AYANEO Pocket EVO and the AYANEO DMG are the last android handheld devices for me. I started buying handheld devices looking for the ultimate one, and I think I found them. I still love my Odin 2 Max but the 24GB of RAM the OLED screen and bigger joysticks got me like yes please.
Thought the same but I'm finding myself using android less for the price. I'm waiting for a strix point handheld. My odin 2 pro, powkiddy v10 and maybe this anbernic will be my last. 😂
Thank you so much for answering my question. And for all the extra information. It is going to be a pass for me. I was hoping for a 720p screen. I got the rg35xx Plus, so it is not much of an upgrade for me
I think 1 joystick is fine with a device like that, for n64, ps1 and dreamcast it will work for like 90% of the games just fine. I just wish they had a flush joystick with the full range of movement.
You did not get your math right with screen size calculation. a 4 inch screen is actually 30% bigger than a 3.5 inch screen. You need to calculate for square inches. 4x4 = 16 3.5x3.5 = 12.25 16/12.24 = 1.306
Hey does it have all the nitendo ip games like Zelda mario and Pokémon, because i read that nitendo made tose companies to not include some nitendo ip titles
They come with games, I wish that they didn’t. It’s better to provide your own arms anyway, as the ROMs that come with it, aren’t usually from good sets.
I don’t understand Bill’s obsession with “double x” on these Anbernic devices. Literally every other content creator just says “x, x” and it’s so much easier to say.
Well, I have to be honest. I don’t tend to watch other reviews except for Russ, and Bob. But for me double X just flows better. Perhaps it’s because of my accent.
