The one thing this video doesn't touch on that much is the special circumstances of liveaboard boats at anchor. I've read several articles recently about different areas in Florida that are prohibiting liveaboards from anchoring. The issue of liveaboards has become something of a hot button topic much like boondocking RVers and even true homeless people. It all comes back to people being resentful of anybody else "getting something for nothing" or living an alternative lifestyle.

@@jeffreyulery2182 In either event, those local jurisdictions are in violation of Florida state law. Florida is VERY clear that as long as you're not in the navigable channel, and not in one of the STATE OF FLORIDA's designated mooring fields, you cannot be impeded from anchoring your vessel.

I must be confused about the part where people are upset because they feel though you are getting something for nothing, what exactly are you getting for nothing considering the vessel I live on it's nearly half a million dollars so what exactly did I get for nothing??

One thing to note, in Florida derelict vessels cannot be claimed as salvage even if the boat is a total wreck. In fact, entering a boat that is not yours regardless of condition could land you a trespassing charge. Personally I think this is causing a ton of dead boat clutter in Florida's beautiful waterways. If a boat is abandoned the boat owner should be held liable for it, given a reasonable amount of time to recover / remove it, but once that is over it should be fair game for salvagers.

If you can find out who owns it...
@JonathanVanVuren

Thanks for pulling that info together. We’re on the Banana River over by Cape Canaveral and there are a number of abandoned vessels. They get cleaned our regularly but it isn’t cheap. There was one guy who “got a deal” on an old cabin cruiser, and anchored it with no engine, no lights, no bilgepump i ever saw running with a sign that read “In Transit” along with a cell number. He’d answer and say he was towing it out of there soon. Right until it sunk, then he had no idea what boat you were talking about. As an owner of a “free” Catalina 22 myself that I’m working hard to fix up again this turns my stomach. These things are dangerous to people and property and just because you got it free doesn’t mean you know how to use it or repair it. I’m not saying everyone has to shell out $$$ to have things professionally repaired, you can be frugal! And I sincerely hope more do as you do, I love that y’all are learning and making repairs it’s such a great example compared to other channels that are all bikinis and boat show give aways. Being a dreamer is great, but at some point real gear and real repairs need to be made and real seamanship needs to be learned or they shouldn’t bother being any closer to the water than a bridge. Great video pointing out one of the things folks should learn about. We all have the right to use these amazing waterways, but a responsibility to keep them beautiful and safe.

There are boaters, floaters and hobos. Florida has been ruined by the hobos and are dragging the floaters down with them. Keep your boat in good shape, keep moving, pick your weather.

How much fuel did you use on your 40 mile trip when you first got the boat? I'm planning a similar trip and wondering what the motoring economy worked out to be
@AdventuresInParadise
@AdventuresInParadise 4 года назад
I think it was about 7 or 8 gallons, but since then on other trips I've worked it out to about 1 gallon per hour at 50-60% throttle. But I have a 2-stroke 6hp from 1996. A newer or 4-stroke wound do better. I would figure at minimum 1gph and then have extra.

I am really surprised that you guys use anchors for long term mooring. I had a fixed mooring which was a very heavy railway truck wheel and that was scary enough for me here in the uk. 😳
@jkutyna
@jkutyna Год назад
The mooring fields in Florida are managed BY the state of Florida and there are very few. Less than 10 in total and 3 of them are in St Augustine alone. The cost of mooring in a moorinig field in Florida exceeds what most slip rentals would be elsewhere. We are talking 200-500 $ per month just to be tied up to your associated mooring ball and it's yours. Nobody else can use it even if your boat is down in the bahamas for the winter.

I've owned multiple large vessels and lived aboard them in California and Corpus Christi, Texas when I was in the Navy. I'm glad I did it then because the climate is not good now. I see these floating homeless camps all over Brevard County and I doubt that any of them are registered or insured, That is making it harder for those with well found boats to find moorage and don't even begin on the insurance scenario. Mooring fields were a great addition to San Diego and I think they should be utilized for all local unattended vessels which are registered and inspected.

I don't live far from there and I don't think a expired sticker on a boat would stay that way to long as they are constantly checked. Anytime I've see one it gets a red sticker on it and is removed if the owner does not contact. This happened to me once, I was leaving my boat in our anchorage, I got a ticket in the mail for no light after only a few days. I had a solar light but it stopped working.

You purchased an improved and bigger bow anchor (I think). Would you recommend it for the Catalina 22 or something else based on your experience?
@AdventuresInParadise
@AdventuresInParadise Год назад
The larger anchor was too hard to lift once it buried itself in the sand. It was only because we left the boat at anchor for storage and we have storms with gusts in the 30's. Seeing that it has to be stored on deck, I would stick with the typical anchor size for a boat of this length.

From my understanding, this isn't possible in Floriday (any more) but is in some states. you find it, it's yours. Florida will have the sheriff calling you, then you get fines, then you pay to have it destroyed, which can be about $5,000. I have a part two of this video I've been working on but it's been months since I've looked at it. Redoing it because we had some changes here. Every anchorage has junk sailboats that are probably too expensive to repair and in too bad of shape to sell. We have 5 or 6 across from our marina that haven't moved in 5 years. They're big sailboats too!

.... any navigable waters are usually in US free to anchor in, this is tiny bit changing at popular cities are getting crowded with moored boats and that is mainly top 20 cities of Florida and Cali and NY but rest of US is not that busy they even bother (the US waterways are vast)..... I wonder if now Fiberglass is cheap after 1960 if more people will move from 100,000 kg boring houses to 3000kg houseboats ...

Just bring it to an area where you see other boats on anchor and leave it, then dinghy out to it. You can anchor anywhere out of the channel and not too close to the marina. Usually you'll see other boats around but you can leave it anywhere out of the way. Email me adventuresinparadise@gmail.com

... to state the obvious, one cannot anchor a boat in the shipping channel, , ,, or in a city run mooring field or even nearby, ,, the other 99% of waters are fine and the further away from city the less likely to get in trouble,,,, , , but that still leaves a lot of questions but wanted to start with the obvious,,, and you NEED to have a WHITE LIGHT AT NIGHT ON the boat or they can ticket it or maybe it is more lights than that (I am on a river and that is all we need)..... I worry a bit about someone stealing my boat or cutting the anchor line for fun so that is another small danger,,,, good luck
