Dear Mark, from the Scottish Border land ; I have always been a fan of yours, especially watching these wonderful historic dives into the Scottish Border land. Your unique Historic Knowledge of The Scootish Border land with your particular and at times, ( at least ) wonderful sense of humour, make these videos of the Scottish Border land particularly interesting. I cannot but help to chuckle at times as you explain about the various subject's on The Scottish Border Land. Thank you for your professionalism , bringing home to me my memories when I visited The Scottish Border Land. So much better than the mainstream. Thank you Mark. Maybe we will meet one day, when next l visit the great Scottish Border Land. Yours sincerely.
As one who lives at the foot of the southern Eildon, I find this utterly fascinating! A great video and incredible secrets being revealed by the satellite technology, thanks for your great work!
Love this, fascinating thank you - one of my favourite spots on the Borders. In 2022 I'm moving back home to live in a rural part of the Borders near Jedburgh, after nearly 4 years living in East Sussex (so hard to find property on the Borders - it felt like I was living in exile!) I'll never leave again. Happy New Year Mark.
great video! seeing the huts on satellite reminded me of three things: Maccu Piccu, the numerous Hill-top villages in France ie Mougins, and the Richat structure. If the terrain was all forests and bog back then, it might have been just for the penthouse view! haha.
Would seem to be perfect site for someone like time team to examine great vid enjoyed it a lot . Good point by the way about water sources on top of hill settlements
Brilliant film Mark, congratulations. Amazing lidar imagery of the hut circles. Did you notice the huge triangle with the divine eye? Was it a goddess Fort?
And technology is only getting better - just look at the ground penetrating radar that has been used at sites in Norway and has uncovered the shapes of ship burials under earth mounds. I'm not sure if it would be suited for the ground on the eildons, though I think it would be perfect to use on trimontium or other sites.
Oh, and the ditches that you show on the video and describe as fortifications. . . they aren't. They were used for herding sheep in ancient times. Today, farmer's would use metal barriers. This was discovered many years ago.
At the time the Romans invaded Melrose was Viking,or I should say a Norse settlement.....the Celts were the other side of the river.......we really need to talk mark,we could change the world...
mibe it wis a vacation spot and the huts wer rentals for the view and they probobly had all sots of entertainment and drink sorta like blackpool withoot the carnival rides
You're not a historian, are you? I'm guessing just someone who's enthusiastic about history. Which is great. But stick to actual historical verified facts and avoid your personal beliefs which certainly aren't based on anything. You lose a certain amount of credibility when you state things that aren't correct.
Nice one Mark, the size is hard to comprehend if your not familiar with it.. 39 acres.. thats just over 22 football (soccer) pitches.. a colossal site so those 500 huts would have plenty room.. Its been suggested if those huts were inhabited there would be 2000 people there.. I could see a smaller population there increasing as you suggest at times of Ceremony etc.. one of my favourite sites too
