Our 52nd show which discusses past auctions that have come up and a new one around the corner. We also talk about the rising costs of buyer's premiums in auction.
Love the extended conversations about auctions, great advice and totally agree on the buyers premium points. I always factor it into my bids, but 20% is easier to calculate then something like 22.5 or 24%. Definitely a turn off if it's too high and can make me ignore an auction as well.
Another good show. 28% is nuts. I've found dealers are usually cheaper than auctions after fees are calculated. Plus it makes you feel better about helping small business than a large corporation. I like the Buy or Bid sales. The timing is great. If I buy a coin, I usually have another 2 or 3 months to save money for the next sale.
That was an amazing episode.... a lot of good information on this one. With that Nomos sale: With strong hammer prices+BP, would dealers even bid on coins for their own stock? Or are premium auction sales like this more towards clients/collectors? I imagine dealers would have to sell those coins at insane prices to even make any money off them.
Not relevant to the video here, but: The true-to-life size chart for ancient denominations in 100 Greatest Ancient Coins has been invaluable as a very new collector who buys online because he has no coin shops that do ancients nearby.
Agrippina the younger was Nero's mother, not his wife. And I agree that coin is actually a pretty good portrait of her, much better than Nero on the obverse.
I fear the Nomos auction will do well and all the other auction houses will raise their buyers premium. Time and time again the significant majority of companies have proven their only goal in life is to stick it to their customers and take them for all they are worth (HJB excluded of course). I for one am boycotting the Nomos auction and hope most everyone else does as well.
Would you consider doing an informational section on Sicily and the time different periods? Ie. second democracy. Thanks for your consideration and the videos! Really look forward to when they’re uploaded!
Thanks for another insightful podcast 🤩! The segment on auction fees was illuminating 😉. I wasn't impressed with the Koson stater you posted. As you stated the coin doesn't show any die rust, however, it shows excessive die wear on the obverse, & overall the dies were poorly engraved.
Exactly, it's being "fixed" either way legal or not... at least do it in a good manor. That's where government intervention and oversight can help the economy and the world out even tho nobody wants to admit it.
