Right at the middle of Rome´s golden age, a caretaker reigned over 23 years of prosperity and peace, protecting the citizens of his Empire with a firm, but gentle hand. Erudite, calm, competent and just, Antoninus Pius became the reference of a "Good Guy", a "Good Emperor" and the reference dozens of kings and princes would try to emulate throughout history.

History is kind to the just rulers. By all accounts Antoninus was a man of high integrity. Many of his policies were very libertarian for the era. He was incredibly frugal and cut waste in government which allowed the empire to run huge budget surpluses, he seperated his personal wealth from the imperial treasury, he freed slaves and supported the enfranchisement of freedmen, he reformed the law to presume innocence until proven guilty on trial. Antoninus was far ahead of his time.

Amazing video once again, a very pristine Pius happens to be my first coin! Great conditions and prices to be found given the prosperity and vast numbers his denarii were minted.

Pius is probably the best introductory coin to the Denarius denomination, as well as for a set of the 5 good emperors :)

My favorite coin is Antoninus Pius wearing the laurel crown with a young curly haired Marcus Aurelius on the obverse. The art style on the coins of his reign are spectacular!

Somehow, someway my collection has started to lean heavily towards Antoninus Pius and he's quickly become my favorite emperor because of it. Your channel probably has more information about him than I've seen in full documentaries because he's usually just lumped in with the rest of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty as a side note which is a shame because the guy had the longest reign of all the 5 "good emperors" and his time was probably one of the best to be a Roman... in Rome and the Empire as a whole. Great video C.N., love your channel, man.

One of my favorite emporers. I had to make sure I got nice sharp examples for Antoninus Pius denaris. The reverse is of Concordia.

Thats the great thing about Antoninus. Some collectors might not be able to afford a nice and sharp Marcus Aurelius, or Trajan, but they can always count on finding a great-looking Antoninus for a fair price!

A very rare good man that held high power for decades and not be corrupted from it. Great video, great coins! Pius is next after I finish my Aurelian series

Great video. I even have a couple of these coins in my inventory currently. Imagine being a Roman living during his reign, and potentially living to the issues of Commodus' reign

This could be an expensive channel to watch. Picked up a Faustina I denarius (and several other ancients) this weekend at the monthly coin show primarily because of your excellent presentation video. Enjoy watching the channel.

I just got my first Antonius Pius. A nice MS RIC III Ant Pius 290A. (I think. It was listed as a BMC 943 bust variety and I dont have that book to look it up) I Had to decide to post this here or on your video on Roman Temples on coins. It is going to take me decades to build a nice Roman collection. So many to choose from too. I also have to try not to get sidetracked on all of the nice Greek coins. Maybe I wont try that hard. haha. They are very attractive coins.

He is supposed to have built a villa not far from my home, I live a short distance from Chester (Deva), the villa was at a place called Vari. The Welsh name is Bodfari. The single F in Welsh, is pronounced as a V.

Thanks Joseph! Getting my hands on one is the real challenge, but definitely, if I have the opportunity, I'll make one. They are fascinating pieces, I particularly like the ones from the late empire.

I own a sestercius of Marcus Aurelius from his late years as emperor. The reverse shows him crossing the river Danube on a bridge made out of boats. This coin is supposedly rated R3 but I failed to find any more information about this coinage on internet (only one coin is visible which was sold some time ago and another coin was said to be into the collections of the British Museum). If you have access to better information than I am, I would be delighted to hear any more detail from you. Happy new year, from France.

How do you make the sketches of the obverse and reverse of the coins? Do you draw them yourself? I think they are really great! They really help you see the design and words on the coins and they are done so well!

I recently got an As with Marcus Aurelius on it, thinking it was one of his coins, but it turned out it was actually an Antoninus coin depicting Marcus as Caesar! I used to think the position of a Caesar was synonymous with that of an Augustus but it seems like a Caesar is an heir to the throne right?
@ClassicalNumismatics
@ClassicalNumismatics 2 года назад
The names can be confusing, because the terminology itself was confusing to begin with. The tradition was created by Augustus, previously Octavian. He wanted to be connected to Julius Caesar's image as much as possible, so he came up with the Title Augustus, or "the illustrious one", as the primary title of the Emperor himself, and Caesar as a position for the heir designated by said Augustus. As with anything related to Rome, its complicated, as you can see many people who were at first heir, so Caesars, ascend to the throne and choose to keep the "Caesar" apart from also adding the "Augustus". But the rule is applicable. Caesar, Heir. Augustus, Emperor.

It gets even worse with the Severans, as a lot of them were called Antoninus as well!

I have an Antonius Pius coin you did not show. It as the same obverse as the 149 coin, but a different reverse. The reverse depicts Fortuna holding a cornucopia. It also has I I I I but instead of C O S, it has C O L. What do I have?
@ClassicalNumismatics
@ClassicalNumismatics 2 года назад
Antoninus had a very long reign of 23 years, he struck a LOT of different coin designs. A video showing all of his issues would be a month long :) The only thing I can recommend is you look at my playlist for beginners, learn how to research coins online and try to find your coin.

Sometimes the legends can be worn, its a matter of looking at similar examples that might have better legends and figuring out what is supposed to be there.
