It's Tiara Tuesday, and since it's August, we're going to talk about the Habsburg Peridot Tiara, part of an impressively oversized late Georgian era parure. This is jewelry on a massive scale, large and showy pieces set with perfectly matched, dark green peridot.
Not only is the color of the peridot unusually muted and subtle, but the scrolling floral design surrounding them is anachronistically delicate. I like the strange melding of opposite aesthetic principles here. I also like that the tiara can be made even more dramatic by swapping in the drops from the necklace! I'm always a big fan of versatile jewelry.
There are not that many pieces from this early in the 19th century featuring peridot. There are a few later Victorian and Belle Epoque peridot tiaras, but those favor the acid lime green that the stone is known for.
