Jomon is a period of Japanese pre-history that lasted from about 16,000 to 2,500 years ago. The period is marked by distinct clay pottery with many decorative elements, such as flame-shaped decorations and designs made with woven strings.
The people who lived in what is Niigata Prefecture today had to learn to survive under extreme climate conditions (particularly due to the 2-3 meter snow falls!).
Some traditions and practices that started so many thousands of years ago, can still be seen in Japanese culture.
Join us, as we explore the ways of life of the ancient people and how their lifestyles are still reflected in the culture of modern Japan.
