When one looks at this video and understands the history, it is obvious that Rome was the foundation for the modern world. We do owe homage to Rome for that.
Fascinating how such a sophisticated and advanced society could also be so savage, violent and brutal. They invented the rule of law as we know it, yet they were the first to use industrial manslaughter for fun in the form of the most violent and bloody "games" ever known.
Maybe one day in the future, super computers will be able to develop simulated realities that we can visit and will allow us to walk through and experience Ancient Rome.
As I understand, Octavian was envious of Alexandria and was determined to rebuild Rome with marble whenever possible. But my reading has only got me to him being renamed Augustus thus far. Not at Nero yet. It is truly a fascinating study, eh?
@sum41fanTC Thats a joke I hope...I mean we are living in Roman civilization today. Roads, construction techniques, actually life in general is what it is today because of the roman empire. They even invented concrete, pioneered firing bricks and invented plumbing and plumbed toilets! It is no coincidence that you see a similarity, its similar because its the same. If the Romans had invented football, i'm sure they would have played that in the Coloseum too! lol

@sum41fanTC Well of course, we are the descendants of the roman empire. Everything from how we build our homes, where we gather to socialize, what are our moral valors , our interest in medicine and science is all in direct relation with the roman civilization. That being said i am proud to have Romans as my ancestors, and going to Rome and seeing The Pantheon basically unchanged even after all the violent history since it has been built, stands proud and proof of the roman empire legacy.

@xTribunusMilitumx, Hammurabi and Moses have Rome beat by miles in terms of both age and morality. At least Moses demanded witnesses to trivial infractions before execution. Roman Law is not the basis of Western Law. English common law is the basis of Western Law from King Alfred. The Semetic Bible also had a major impact on Western Law.

@darklord4878, There only showing a small part of Rome. For just about everybody, Rome sucked. Have you ever seen any Mad Max movies or other post-apocalyptic films? In ancient Rome, people actually lived that way! Bartertown on Mad Max 3 was more civilized than most of Ancient Roman territory.
