Nah nothing "mid" about it. Just breakneck GBA 2d action. It also IS a sequel story. The plot directly happens because of the first game.

Because the bosses and music are reused (I know for a fact it's a sequel tho)

Also the fact that it was on handheld meant that the trademark "tons of stuff on screen" was a no go. I remember reading reviews explaining the game could only support two enemies on screen at once and dismissing that game just for that.
