When the movie "A Hard Day's Night" was first released in theaters, I was 7 years old and went to see it. I was a big fan by that time, like almost everyone else, but had not yet heard "If I Fell" or "And I Love Her." When the boys played "If I Fell," I realized they were more than a very popular band, they were making real art. And then, when they played "And I Love Her," I was stunned by how beautiful and masterful it was, and I became an even bigger fan. It remains one of my favorite songs by The Beatles.

I agree. I also was 7 when my 2 older sisters took me to see Hard Day's Night. I remember the theatre was full of teenage girls screaming most of the movie. Incredible times with Beatlemania. I get shivers recalling it now. It was like Covid 19 in reverse - everyone was joyously happy, even strangers were fellow beatles fans. So exciting, so magical and optimistic.

@@melinarodriguez8395 Yes Melina. The best way to describe Beatlemania was that it was literally a "pandemic in reverse". The front lines news stories were all about the Beatles. The shops were selling Beatles clothes, wigs etc. Beatles music was playing everywhere you went, on public transport, at the beach, at petrol/gas stations, at airports - everywhere even at school where my older 15 yr old sister got caught with a small transister radio at school (that everyone carried) same size as a cellphone. Beatles songs playing on several stations at once ! ... it is hard to imagine the craziness. Even enemies came together as fellow Beatles fans. 💗
@melinarodriguez8395
@melinarodriguez8395 3 года назад
@@michaellincoln3739 Wow, I can't imagine how overwhelming all that must have been for the Beatles themselves! And they seem so centered and sober in interviews. They were really great not just because of their talent but because they remained so human (apparently) and genuine through all that crazyness! (Any other much lesser known band can so easily be much more snobish!)
@michaellincoln3739
@michaellincoln3739 3 года назад
@@melinarodriguez8395 Hey Melina you are right. The Beatles were a "miracle" in so many ways. It was like they came from the future or an alternative universe. The were only young, but they expressed themselves with new attitudes and wisdom. For example they saw themselves as citizens of the world not British. They hated injustice and racism. They hated class distinction and snobery. Many of their music idols were "black" artists. In so many respects they were aliens. On top of all this, they burst onto the music scene in 1963 with 16 hits ! ... where did that music come from ? .. another planet probably. ps are you from Argentina ?

A bit of music trivia. And I Love Her is in a minor key, but it ends on a major chord. In music theory, that's called a picardy third. Paul credits George for making the song extra special because he came up with the riff that opens the song. Thanks for the reaction, Harri!

This song is very meaningful to me. My parents were both raised in an ultra-conservative religious sect. They couldn't deal with their children liking the Beatles and tried to shield us from all rock music. Years later I was in a store with my mom, who was an excellent pianist so she did know about music. An instrumental version of this song was playing and she remarked how beautiful it was, and was very surprised when I told her it was the Beatles. This very song marked a change in her willingness to be open to new ideas. This happened probably in the mid 1970s and I still remember it clearly, it had that much impact.

Normal studio multi-track tape speed at the time was 15 ips (inches per second), but "Misery" was recorded at 30 ips, as George Martin intended to personally add piano at a later date, and preferred playing this at half-tempo an octave below.[12]

Thank you for your reactions, Harri. There are many Beatles reactions going on these days, and the majority are of post-Sgt Peppers songs. I think that perhaps those new to The Beatles have the impression that the later years must have been the "peak" of their song quality. What they fail to realize is that The Beatles became a sensation through these earlier recordings. You, my friend, are exploring these to your credit. It was music from "Meet The Beatles" through "Revolver" - the Beatlemania era - that made The Beatles the most popular band on the planet, and household names of John, Paul, George and Ringo. There is gold found in every album that The Beatles put out, but it was the songs from these earlier albums that cemented the popularity of The Beatles.

It's called a "Picardy third" and was common practice in the Renaissance era in choral music, in hymns and madrigals (Claudio Monteverdi and Paul Gerhardt, to name two eminent representatives). It symbolizes relief after grief and somberness, and it expresses consolation. Beautifully used in this context. Another stylistic device they use here, is the chromatic shift from F minor to F# minor , beginning with the guitar solo and throughout the last verse. So the song startes out in F minor and ends up in F# major due to the Picardy third.

@@ralphcordon5688 Where are you getting those keys from? On my piano it goes from C# minor to D minor. Ends on D major.

Any wonder why the world fell in love with them? Beautiful simplicity. George and Paul are sweet together. One of Paul's " silly love songs"! Thanks for posting. You're a lot of us feel better today.

I think that's a Spanish Guitar with nylon strings that George is playing. You can see the video from the movie. It's amazing the songs that the Beatles came up with. They were truly talented. Where does that come from ? Even after the Beatles broke up, they made some great music, and McCartney made all sorts of different kinds of music. He even made a song for a Video game. Can you check out this song ?: "Hope For The Future" - McCartney - This is a truly inspiring song to me...

The thing that sneaks up about this song is the movement up a half tone.

I was thinking about this only yesterday and wondering when you would review it! You really ought to see both of their films too!

You’re right. In the early days it was hard to distinguish the singing voices between Paul and John.

Another beautiful one for sure!!! Hey Hari. Along with the Muscle Shoals documentary, check out The Wrecking Crew documentary!! Both will fill in soooo many gaps in understanding some background on US music from the 60-70s

I hope you get to see the movies A Hard Day's Night. This song is beautifully staged.

One peculiar feature of Lennon/McCartney harmonies is that they did not attempt to synchronize every aspect. Not Beach Boys or Bee Gees or a barber shop quartet. You could hear one of them start a phrase a tenth of a second before the other one. You could hear them attack notes differently.

In the early 2000 did a Beatles walking tour of London that started at the rail station in HDN.

So far the only time I have visited the UK was in 1979. After getting off the plane in Birmingham, my friend and I took a train to Manchester. The compartment we stepped into was exactly like the one in AHDN - and I was in heaven!

Harri, here’s my suggestion… start from the beginning and just review all the Beatles songs. Every one of them is worth it.

If you really liked this i recommend another underrated classic by Lennon himself called - Oh My Love! If THIS gives you this mellow melancholia feeling, then i just listen to THAT track! LOL
