My dad used to play this for me before I'd fall asleep at night when I was very young. Now years later I found the video again and it just gives me a feeling that everything will be ok. This cover is beautiful, so glad I found it again.
Definitely Billy Joel's most underrated masterpiece. You've really done it justice. I love how you do the blend and really emote the feeling of the song. I can listen to it forever.
+MistaTwigz Thank you so much. I was really surprised about the song when I first heard it. Why is this nog on his double best of album?! This is such a wonderful piece of music. Then again, he has an awful lot of beautiful music... can't put them all on the album I guess :). Thanks for the kind words!
+Sonny Vande Putte In an interview Billy was asked what his most underrated song was and he literally walked over to the piano and just started playing this song. It is on his greatest hits album, but that album has quite literally 50 songs on it out of the 121 with lyrics that he wrote and produced.
+Luke Cocchi Thanks for that story! This song means so much to me; I wish I could tell that to Billy Joel. I can't, so I'll tell Sonny. HEY SONNY! This video is a perfect rendition of the perfect song. I'm elated and in pain at the same time. And maybe I'd better write this up at the top, too, to be sure Sonny sees it.
I promise I never will, Ely :). A singer is who I am, I wouldn't know what to do without singing :D. I'm glad to read that my videos are able to convey certain emotions. Thank you very much for stopping by!
My own acapella group is rehearsing a rendition of this song, and it's really nice to have such a good example. I'm especially appreciative of the dynamics. It helps me to form an idea of what I'll be doing in the piece. Thanks!
Sonny, your lead is the most gorgeous sound I've ever heard. It's just so smooth and silky. Not the tiniest, remotest bit of tension - absolutely flawless. Thank you for being you!
This is...beautiful. I am so conflicted. On one side I just want to listen to it for the rest of the day. On the other side it makes my heart bleed. So strange that music can make us feel things so strongly. There is no love without the inevitable loss. That is what this song makes me feel. Its still worth it though. Even if the pain of loss is looming on the distant horizon. Thank you for this wonderful performance. I usually have to finish it with a view if your 76 trombones to cheer myself up afterwards :)
Both songs (this and Lullaby) were almost written to be an acapella song in the first place. Especially this one. If you listen to the original, the a cappella song is practically already there :). Thanks for stopping by!
Sonny Vande Putte Absolutely right. It might be because I sang them before I heard the originals, but I've always enjoyed the acapella versions more. I plan on giving them a try in multitrack myself at some point, but I think I need to work on my tuning a little first.
I grew up singing A cappella in a Church. I am so glad that I did...the appreciation of the human voice as the only instrument is so beautifull when perfectly done. Thank you, Sonny. Your 80 year old friend. smile.
Thank you so very much!! I'm glad you enjoyed every aspect of the video. Comments like yours are the reason I still keep making these videos :D. So keep it up as well ;).
That a lot of questions for one simple answer: Playback. Like almost everybody out there I lip sync the video. That way I'm trying to bring the best quality to the audio but also the best possible quality on the video for entertaining purposes. Beats a guy siting at his desk behind a mic with giant headphones on his noodle in my opinion :).
Hi Sonny - I really appreciate this arrangement but not least your fine rendition of this beautiful song - I conduct a small male choir and would love to buy this ttbb-arr - is that possible? I cant seem to find it on the web - can you maybe help - that would be great. Oh by the way ... many musical greetings from Copenhagen, Denmark
Four years ago my older brother said. Watch this video. It was such a great song. Today after four years, I was browsing youtube videos. The memory of this video. Now I'm here again. Thank you for this song.
Logan Heldenbrand I actually am singing this currently. For my final concert of my freshman year. that's what brought me here. The song is truly beautiful.
Hey man, as a huge billy Joel fan and also a huge fan of a capella vocal work as a vocalist myself I just want to tell you I discovered this cover only yesterday and must have heard it 20 times. It’s absolutely phenomenal and you deserve absolutely all the praise for this
Sonny, it's not every day that I run across something extraordinary in this modern music life. A beautiful song and your performance is wonderful! Thank you.
Gerald More Thank you very much, Gerald! I do try my very best with every single video I publish. Thanks a lot for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Take care
+BlinkinFirefly It is indeed a very good arrangement of an incredible song and still quite easy to learn. I think that's why so many choirs sing this one. Thanks for stopping by!
I love this cover of And So it Goes, it's my personal favorite. I like it more than The Kings Singer's version because you actually take the time to sing the song. The Kings kinda just march right on through at a pretty fast pace which kinda doesn't really do it for me, but you take time with the song and make it sound amazing.
Lying here weeping my eyes out. This song is so beautiful and painful. It’s almost an exact description of where I am. Except that I offered her this heart to break: and she broke it.
You are the most emotional and wonderful acapella singer I have heard, your voice is amazing and I hope that you keep putting out videos like this. This is one of my favourite songs. So thank you. For making an emotional song even more emotional.
Thank you so much for those encouraging words! You are so kind to take the time and let me know how much you appreciate the videos I make. Thank you very much.
This brings me back to high school barbershop. You were the first person I was introduced to on anything barbershop. After that my quartet won first place at Far Western! Thank you for the amazing videos and giving everybody inspiration!
Such a good rendition of this Billy Joel song. I sung it in my High School vocal ensemble and hearing ti now brings back memories of those days. Good job and keep the good work up. =')
I've listened to this song so many times, I've learned all the parts by memory. Gosh, I'm such a choir geek. I love this song, Sonny! Great work. Need to gets my schools men's chorus to sing this.
+Marti Davis Thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it :). I release a video every month, so if you don't wanna miss out on anything, you can subscribe (If you haven't already). Thanks for stopping by!
I sang this song in a men's choir in high school and have always loved it. Sounds fantastic! This looks so much fun I may have to try doing it myself. I have enjoyed many of your songs here, thanks for sharing your talent.
You should try it Steven. It's completely different from singing with an actual quartet though. It's a lot of hard work if you wish to get it perfect, but the result is indeed a lot of fun :D. You are very welcome! Thank you for the support! Take care
I was around i think when you first uploaded your 2010 version of this video. You are the singer that made me realize I love a cappella. Your version of this song has always hit my heart a certain way and ever since I first heard it I've been trying to figure out what kind of singer I am. Anyways, keep it up I love your voice and someday I hope to be a quarter of what you are! Much love -Frank from Los Angeles
Thank you so much for your lovely message! I'm really glad my videos got to make a difference for you. Keep it up, man. Never give in and you'll get there!
This is gorgeous, Sonny...I'm sobbing. My heart is breaking so much from a failing relationship...and this performance is speaking the heartbreak so accurately. Why do I have to love so deeply...
Wow! Chills, chills, and more chills! I was and still am a HUGE fan of your first version of this, but this one takes the cake. You somehow managed to improve upon the dynamics of the first version, and the crescendos, decrescendos, and slight tempo changes before you sing "and you can have this heart to break".... Just perfection! The vocals are as solid as ever, but the dynamics REALLY bring this piece to life and insist that the listener feel some sort of emotion. Absolutely perfect!
Yes ! There is a room in every heart. It is often secret. Beautiful text . the relaxed tune suits him. Your performance reflects him . All four musical part them are wonderful. Perfect illusion. I just closed my eyes ,and see the story . Fascinated .
I enjoy how it seems you feel the words to the songs as you sing them & that is one of the many things I enjoy hearing and watching you sing. Nice work! & great arrangement! Luv it Dr. K.
