And the Angels Called, by James Swearingen, was commissioned by a high school in Copley, Ohio.
Three of the students there, who all happened to be in the band, tragically lost their lives within a short span of time. The piece begins with a mournful, dirge-like section. In the middle of this piece, three solos emerge, a tuba, a trumpet, and a flute - the instruments played by the three students. The melody which they play is the old English folk tune "Kingsfold," a tune which is most commonly known as a hymn to the text, "I Heard the Voice of Jesus say 'Come Unto Me and Rest.'" The remainder of the work is very upbeat - a celebration of the students lives.
This recording was a project of mine back in highschool, and took me approximately eight months to complete. In total, there are more than forty parts, including flutes, bassoons, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, french horns, trombones, euphonium, tubas, and percussion (I had not learned the oboe yet, so I filled the part instead with soprano saxophone - sorry oboists...).
Big thank you to Calgary Christian High School for letting me borrow instruments and recording equipment.
Thanks for watching!

If any of you know the story behind this piece, it is truly very emotional. Amazing.

This is the one and only piece of music I have ever gotten emotional to and I can only imagine me showing this to someone and them being confused why I'm crying lol

Thank you. This song is special to me and when I needed to hear it this video was there. My cohort of band kids growing up played this together. When we got older, we all lost the middle school band teacher to suicide, and later, one of our star tuba players committed suicide as well. My heart breaks listening to the solos. Thank you thank you thank you forever.

Great song! I played that xylophone/bells part back in high school and still play that end portion whenever I bust out my bells. It's such a fun part to play

I guess its easier to get the band to do whatever you'd like if you are the band, so it sounds fantastic!
