Also I’d like to thank you again as I was watching you rebuild the transmission on a John Deere 4050. Cut a long story short. I used to be a field service mechanic..this is exactly why i finally got out of it..too much stress trying to placate too many customers with too little appreciation of the amount of work involved in diagnose/repair of literally every year make and model of vehicle or equipment. Thanks Again, Warren.

Updated camshaft does not use shim per parts bulletin PB00256. Early cams had damper and shim, then shim only, now cam pilot is sized so shim isn't needed.

@Slugg-O yeah but like he said, the way he had the shim on the outside of the gear wasn't doing anything to effect the timing.
@scarface-39

But having the shim on with the updated cam, could it be causing the tone wheel to be pushed out too far? And not be affecting the actual mechanical timing?
@markdauncey927
@markdauncey927 8 месяцев назад
No - the tone wheel bolts to the cam gear. So it stays in the same place because the idler is properly meshed.

Don’t beat yourself up to much, shit happens. I use to be a independent field service mechanic. When your touching the amount of stuff that you are it’s easy to overlook something sometimes. It sometimes happens when we’re tired and being pulled so many directions. I used to have equipment pulled apart in the shop and then have to drop everything to make service calls. It was maddening!! I hung it up several years ago but kept my truck so to work on my personal equipment. Being a independent mechanic is nothing like working in a dealership or multi employee shop where you have a little more time to breathe, and other mechanics to bounce ideas off of. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re doing fine!

Hi Warren, Former Peterbilt DTM here. The nose of the camshaft has been changed on the service parts to be thicker and no longer required a tolerance washer. Measure from the retaining groove to the cam nose mounting flange. Washer likely not needed on this cam.

Watching from Australia. The anticipation waiting for the next episode is better than most TV dramas! Great methodology, knowledge, but also humility and humour. Reminds me of when I replaced half the components on my 70’s Holden and spent weeks chasing a problem that had it stalling every time I turned left - turned our to be a faulty brand-new ignition coil - horizontally mounted, it obviously had insufficient insulating oil in it, and turning left was exposing windings internally and allowing the HV side of the coil to arc to ground. Put the old coil back on - solved!

Someone else mentioned that the spacer is not used with the updated cam. When you had it behind the cam gear it moved the tone wheel back out of alignment with the cam sensor resulting in erratic cam signal confusing the ECM. While the tone wheel doesn't mount with the bolt holes the spacer does and the space makes no difference when in the front, it does make a difference when behind the cam gear.
@TMxl-w5t
@TMxl-w5t 8 месяцев назад
If I'm following you correctly...Warren, fitted the spacer behind the cam gear, (transmission side) not between the cam, and cam gear, and shew that it didn't actually affect the tone wheel in any way ..
@macbeth2354
@macbeth2354 8 месяцев назад
Looked like the tone wheel still mounts to the cam gear face, fitting through the spacer (minute 12:30 or so disassembly). But I'm getting your point about the different measurements on the old vs updated cam.
@user-jn6cp8fn8b
@user-jn6cp8fn8b 8 месяцев назад
@@macbeth2354 I think partial reassembly and then removing the cam sensor and looking in / sticking an inspection camera in to check the alignment is needed. It seems almost certain now that the tone wheel is not getting properly aligned with the sensor. Whether it's due to the current spacer, or possibly needing a different spacer or tone wheel to match the new cam.

Measure from where the mating side of the timing cover (where it meets the back of the block) to the center of the cam sensor head mounted in the timing cover. Then you will know where you need to locate the tone ring, as far as spacing.

Warren, One thing to do, is unplug all the injectors and check the resistance of each coil. One could be shorted and pull the drivers down inside the ECM. I had an engine do this one time and caused erratic injection timing, and ultimately a no start. Had no codes as well. Was a Cummins engine though. Crank no start with no codes and no smoke. Once I found the shorted injector coil, I left that one unplugged, and the engine fired up. When you have cam or crank unplugged, it wont fire injectors, so you'll get normal cadence cranking. I feel your frustration, I really do. Shop owner myself.

Hi there Warren. It almost looks like the new cam has been beefed up, so as to do away, with the spacer washer, in which case, fitting the washer could, space away the tone ring, from the sensor. Thing is, it ran initially, I think you said in an earlier vid, so the EGR valve is looking more of a possible answer. Good videos though, and fair play to you for posting. Most people only show their successes, and WE ALL, fu.k up, as WE ALL know !!

You hit the nail on the head @3:40. I am an engineer for a large equipment OEM and im in my 40s. I am one of the few that works on equipment in my spare time and grew up doing it. Most do not. And the younger group coming in rarely have any hands on experience with equipment or working on things. It doesn't look like it will get any better. And us older experienced engineers can''t catch all the serviceability issues and even if we do, we get overuled by managers who say thats a nice to have. Bigger flywheel housing costs more money so some manager with no hands on equipment experience probably nixed that because of extra cost!!!

You have hit the nail on the head Dirt and debris ...I have been working on the PACCAR product in the UK in DAF trucks ,,The tolerance nowdays in the fuel system are so tight the least piece of dirt blocks them...I would say the pump units are ok as he is getting rail pressure ,so much that the pump units have went in to a high negative correction , this points to blocked injectors ,,I have seen it a few times ,the engine will start run briefly then it will not start again..I have in one video gave all the pressures and what happens from the manufacturers troubleshooting ,,but he either hasnt read it or is not interested ..For all it would take to send the injectors for testing ,would be cheaper than all the effort and guessing

I just experienced something similar. Replaced a Camshaft along with all the tappets. Started the truck up on Friday and it idled rough as if it had a misfire. Sat over the weekend and could not get it started. Had synchronization on my Cam/Crank. Rail pressure and Low Side Fuel pressure good. Exhaust gas pressure normal (No restriction). Could hear puffs but just would not start. Spent all morning and could not get it to go. Had to use a DAVCO/Eaton priming tool pushing 60 PSI to prime it for over half an hour. Could see air bubbles in the tank return and eventually it settled down and I had no bubbles. Had to crank a few times after and it started but was slow and had no throttle response. Let it idle for 5 minutes and it straightened out. Regained pedal response. Ended up having a misfire due to an Injection that is leaking. Truck starts up no problem now. Might be worth a shot to throw a primer on it and let it push fuel through the system for a good while!

I am an engineer, but I design civil works like roads and utilities now, not machines. I did work as a tool ,and die machinist , automotive and heavy equipment mechanic (much like Warren's work, but thankfully got out just before all the electronics and emissions BS really came to the forefront), engine machinist / builder, and machinery / industrial / manufacturing machinery designer / builder for many years and can say many mechanical and industrial engineers I worked with had never learned or attempted to repair anything in their lives. The audacity and narcissism most engineers exhibited while defending their poor design choices and process decisions when called to explain why things didn't work / fit or couldn't practically be serviced or repaired was venomous. Once whatever design work had left their desk, trouble stemming from their lack of care and foresight was always someone else's fault / problem further down the stream.

Same here. I watch *RU-vid almost exclusively.* Especially channels *similar to this.* I care almost nothing about any television shows anymore. (I'm happy to say ;-) It's mostly *overproduced garbage.*

When you crank the engine do you get white smoke out the exhaust? Yes would be a timing problem, no would be a fuel problem which is what I suspect. When truck initially come in had a code for small fuel leak. Nothing external so had to be internal. I believe you said the high pressure fuel rail pressure was considerably high now. High pressure there would cause your injection pump rollers and can premature wear so this may have been going on for a while. Injector line must be seated correctly and torqued correctly or will leak across to the return and won’t fire. If this was your problem you wouldn’t show high pressure. Try to determine which cylinder is firing with a thermo gun and then track injector line back to rail and start looking for a blockage in the fuel rail. Could even be a pice from old injection pumps. Also for shit and giggles try starting with one of the injection pumps unplugged and then the other. I’ve heard of them running on one pump but not with the other or both plugged in. Injector line go bad on these is common and can leak internally. Should have about one thread exposed when these are seated correctly. If that was the case you would have low pressure and your sensor would need to be bad since you’re reading high pressure. Premature pump lifter wear still sounds like pressure and that would need to be a blockage or bad high pressure regulating valve. Good luck.

Another thought, too high of pressure with new injection pumps maybe from a stuck pressure regulating valve, maybe above working limit of injectors and can’t open when pulsed. Unplug one pump and try.

I dont claim to know much brother and i haven't watch all the videos on this truck that has been dragging you threw the mud but i know your stuck on that uneven crank and im with you on that but your timing is right i believe you might have a fuel injector out what if you try caping off fuel injectors maybe you have one completely out or over fueling or returning to much fuel like in the Cummins engines or your overhead is done incorrectly iv done it many times were i followed the wrong procedure and had something similar ither way i will keep you in prayer i know you will figure it out its just that journey to find the answer is all up hill with no water or shoes sometimes.
