I have been working on my garden for years I planted my first fruit trees over 22 years ago. After watching your videos I started bringing wood chips over 150 yards. I appreciate the pointers you have shared and it has made a difference in my garden. I was able to donate 170 LBS of tomatoes to the food bank. I can't believe my yeld.

Great video brotha. Your gardens look amazing and your happiness is infectious. For the past 3 years I have tried to grow gardens here in the Smokey Mountain Tennessee area and I'm failing miserably. The soil in the area I live in is absolutely horrible. There is a lot of clay soil and tons of rocks. I am originally from the Chicago suburbs and what a difference the soil is.

I found some recently -- they went to fennel town on my one plant... we kind of panicked and offered them some queen anne's lace and yarrow after they decimated the host plant. They all left the planter. I'm interested in how they interacted with your mantis family -- the more I've been looking at this, I'm starting to think my space is too delicate to introduce mantis as we have a crazy assortment of bees and then aphids, ladybugs, wasps, monarchs. I don't necessarily want to add mantis to that mix I don't know.

She’s the one who showed me what a _REAL_ tomato is supposed to taste like (not the store bought crap that I am stuck with), and how amazing tomatoes can be just plain with a bit of salt. I am so envious… I can’t grow anything because I just live in a shoebox apartment with no garden. 😢

Love your enthusiasm! The caterpillars that you shared are actually going to grow into Black Swallowtails, just glorious! They look very similar to the Monarch but eat different things including carrot tops and I think fennel. Monarchs eat only Milkweed, their host plant. Cheers! New subscriber here :)
i found them on my parsnips this past year and i kept one... i live in nw pa and it said online that if you get them before august it will take 18-22 days to hatch after it makes its chrysalis and so i got it last week of july and it made its chrysalis july 30th but 18-22 days later it never hatched (was disappointed because i was going to video chat with my niece 10 and nephew 6 when it started hatch) so online said a percentage just won't hatch so figured it was just dead? so on day 27 thought I'd dissect it just to see how much it had transformed inside before it died and they hang their top half of the chrysalis with a string attached to a stick and when i pulled the string off the stick the chrysalis jerked around and moved in my fingers it startled me lol so it was still alive?! so researched further online and if they don't hatch in the fall they'll hatch in the spring! so carefully wrapped some thread around where the string had been and hope i didn't hurt it!! i guess we'll see this spring...it is still alive tho i had showed it to my niece and nephew when they were here for christmas and i gently touched it and it still jerked around!!!

Yeah, those guys eat my parsley every year, but I figure “how much parsley do you actually need?”, so I plant extra. Even if they eat it all the way to the ground, it comes back after they pupate (or after the birds get them).
They look similar if you're not into caterpillar ID, but yes these are Black Swallowtails. The adults are still not as common as we could stand and do a lot of pollination. They strongly prefer to lay eggs on tender herby greens like dill, fennel, carrot, and parsley. I'm considering planting dill as a trap/host plant for them, even though I don't use it much. Monarchs exclusively eat milkweeds, which you might enjoy incorporating as an ornamental. Butterfly weed has a shorter habit (~18 in tall?) than more common mildweeds and it flowers prolificly. I have some in a veg bed and all the pollinators go nuts for it -- native bees, bumblebees, wasps, bee-flies, butterflies, you name it. Last year it even hosted some monarch caterpillars. The denser foliage (vs field/swamp varieties) makes it easier for caterpillars to evade predation at a much lower planting density.
Its so satisfying, for me personally, good memories of my grandfather gardening…looking at his stakes of cucumbers, eating fresh baby cucumbers…sitting with him, whilst he had his lunch, which I brought to him….just together quiet. Contemplating. I have started gardening …. on a windy patio….bought a big bag of pine wood mulch…too fine…the winds are blowing them every each way. I don’t know what to do with the rest. Some for indoor plants … Also made mistake on compost choice. Re composted everything. I had a huge olive tree in a pot 4 yrs old, gave it to my neighbour….. to make space for an asian pear tree called niissiekii..fingers crossed 🤞

I absolutely love how happy this makes you, plus how passionate you seem to be while sharing what you’ve learned. It’s nice to see more and more people learning little tricks or different methods for growing plants. Whether it saves space or helps increase production, learning how to utilize smaller spaces and less than ideal environments to produce food is essential for decreasing our dependence of factory farms. We need to start incentivizing small local community farms and to encourage individuals to grow some of their own food as well, not only will that help the environment by decreasing the amount of food that requires transportation from farm to store, but it will increase the overall nutritional value of the fruits and vegetables we’re able to grow because the ability to more closely observe the overall soil and plant health. Anyways, I love your passion for growing food, and I wish more people found something they’re as passionate and happy doing as you are doing all this.
Yes, Tuck found his passion as your assistant. He leaves his "doggy bag" for later. LOL Nothing goes to waste, the worms, ants, birds and what ever else there is will eat what he leaves. The life cycle continues to flourish. Wonderful garden.

Great video! Just to clarify, the caterpillars munching on the carrots are Eastern Swallowtail. E.S. look very similar to monarchs in the caterpillar stage, however monarchs only eat milkweed whereas Swallowtails will host on members of the Apiaceae family, which includes parsley, Queen Anne’s Lace, carrot, celery, fennel and dill. They will also host on plants in the citrus family, including rue bushes and lemon, lime and orange trees. Thanks again for all the great garden info!
I was in a public park a few weeks ago and as part of their exotic plant collection, they had a pineapple, that was actually growing a pineapple! It was yellow and pink, and the most beautiful pineapple I'd ever seen! They transplanted it back into the greenhouse for winter, but it made me happy.
Those pineapple tomatoes...so much flesh and not a lot of seeds. Really jealous of those. Next year I'm replacing my nursery started tomatoes with my own sprouted heirloom varieties
Not only are the tomato plants ridiculously tall, the tomato's are massive. I'm wondering how the stems don't collapse under its own weight, it's impressive.
The ones in the greenhouses are taller. The greenhouses are generally 7m tall, and still, they need to let the stems down because they are longer than the greenhous is tall.
It always cracks me up when some people complain about how enthusiastic James is. I can totally see how he might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I love how he knows who his audience is and doesn’t try to please the folks who want to listen to someone who sounds like a British documentary announcer. I grew Ping Tung eggplants several years ago in my back yard here in south Texas. It thrived from neglect inside a 3 foot tall raised bed. Despite infrequent watering and poor treatment, it just kept putting out fruit nonstop, so much so, that branches would break under the weight of the fruit there were so many. Lost a few of those to the possums in the neighborhood, but otherwise, a single bush gave me over 200 fruit over it's life, despite it's poor treatment.

i live in corpus christi, i grow just like this guy does. i have that black farm dirt around my place. tomatoes are so many i had to rip plants up. big max pumpkins at 80 pounds. squash and cantolope are all good. gonna plant grapes along my fence line soon.

Thats what I want to know. Even for a family there is so much abundance, all at the same time. This is my problem and I'm vegetarian but cant keep up with it.

Tuck is an adorable little thief. 😂 Lemon Boy is one of my favorite tomatoes. I love their bright acidity! My husband and I are both big fans of acidic tomatoes, and those varieties can be kind of hard to find because people usually breed sweet tomatoes since that’s what most people seem to enjoy.
I had two cherry tomato plants grow to around 16 foot this year and out of the other 14 tomato plants I grew not one was shorter than 12 foot. Growing them vertical and not letting them bush out is a game changer

Tuck leaving that two-bite-taken pepper and all of those other kinds of stuff he does that to is ESSENTIAL to your garden care. He smells one of the nutrients that that particular plant needed, found a pepper that gives off what it needs, made sure you didnt take it by biting it himself, and carefully placed it in the perfect position to help that plant get what it needs. He truly is a master gardener!
As a fellow Jersey gardener (Camden County), your space use & harvest are amazing. I'm still in that transition phase between picking plants from Home Depot & growing my own from seed. Currently rocking 2 main 4x8 beds full of tomatoes, peppers, & green beans up on trellises, & a couple of smaller beds, but I must say, your harvests are a heck of a lot more productive than mine have been this year-wondering how much of that may have been not getting enough support to some of the tomato plants early enough. Anyway, awesome video, & I look forward to seeing more!

In Sicily legend has it the best tomatoes hung over the walls like grape vines from the high mountains, because they received the best air and light. Looks like the tomato tree similar as described. The soil is so rich, fish and clay was mixed in the soil.
“Just looking at it brings me joy and eating it and watching it grow the whole process is incredible to me.” This line and your infectious enthusiasm about growing fruits and vegetables sums up perfectly how I feel at this time of year when I’m in the garden harvesting an abundance of nature’s, and my, work.
As long as you have an abundance of delicious tomatoes, then it doesn't matter how you grow your food. See, Tuck did not care how you grew it, he only know how good it is to eat. Ah food HEAVEN for the both of you. That actually looks like the inside of the pineapple in a way. Tuck is licking it so it has his seal of approval. LOL The birds or the worms can have the damaged parts. They will be waiting too. Instead of "Jack and the Beanstalk" you have James and the "Tomato Stalk" ! If it wants to grow then let it be happy and it will gift you with wonderful delicious Gems. You have the room and it said it wants to stretch and the sky is the limit. LOL Reach for the stars and it sure did. LOL Your garden is happy and they all get along well, until there is over growth and suffocation then you have nothing to worry about. You reap what you sow and you are doing an awesome job!! It brings you extreme joy so it is working well for you. You need a ladder to get all those tomatoes. LOL It is a good thing you are tall. I want to say to cut the top down a little but then you might hurt the plant and it would bush out. I guess it is happy to see the sun and moon so let it grow and be happy too. Next year it might be good to get some metal poles and make a sturdy frame for these incredible edibles. Wow, that apple shine is amazing. It looks like you waxed it. The tomatoes have a love for that apple tree. I guess it like to cling on and grow to it's fullest potential. The tomato trees needed the sun so it went high up to get some. Those are smart trees. LOL Love the butterflies. They need a little fence around it so Tuck does not disturb them. I guess those are their food supply. Grow more carrots for them and maybe raise it off the ground so Tuck won't disturb the "paradise butterflies". That is true nature and the cycle of life in the garden. Excellent garden! Lot's of fun watching your enthusiasm. This said, I used to be able to grow gardens like this but sadly I live too close to massive farms, where overuse of fungicides has created some superbugs. Extreme issues with blight and persistent mildew have made residential gardening very difficult. Also, natural predators like snakes and hawks have really taken a hit in recent years, allowing the rabbit, gopher, ground squirrel, and field mouse populations to be out of control. Even when we can find a garden variety that grows, it gets decimated before anything can ripen. What's sad is I live in a very mild climate where you can grow just about anything, from bananas to berries.

Is Tucker on a chicken-free diet? My maltichon got chronic ear infections, and an emergency vet clued me in to the little known chicken allergy found to cause most repetitive dog ear infection. He used to get 2-3 a year; now none for gosh he's 10 now so maybe 6-7 years? Just fyi; few know.

I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days. Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians. And I know that the record which I make is true; and I make it with mine own hand; and I make it according to my knowledge". 1 Nephi 1-3 Hello friends, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The verses above are the first three verses in The Book of Mormon. I know this probably isn't the most ideal place to talk about religion but I really do want you to know that God loves you. You may not love Him or care about Him at all, but He still will continue to love you. You are a beloved son or daughter of God. He knows you personally and He truly and deeply desires for your happiness. He loves everyone who has every lived on this earth, with a perfect equal love regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, faith and values and beliefs. The Lord loves you more than you can think or comprehend. "He inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile" 2 Nephi. He is our loving, caring Heavenly Father. We are literally His children and creations. When we were in the womb, he knew about us" Jerimiah 4:5. He knitted us and we were created in His image. I testify to you that you and I are not a mistake. He knows the very moment when we stand and when we sit. He is familiar with all our ways and knows us personally who we are. The hairs on our very head are numbered. God loved us so much, He sent His Only Begotten Son for us, that we may be able to return and dwell in the presence of God again. The Lord has not forgotten about us even when it feels like He has. He will never forsake us. When we are happy, He and His angels rejoice alongside us. When we are sad, He heals us and lifts us up from our trials. He has always been there for us. He has always been our loving, compassionate Heavenly Father and God. Will we always be His children and people? I testify to you that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. Both love you exceedingly and rejoice when you are happy. They both love you so much. They love you with a love unfeigned. They will never ever stop doing good unto you. I know that The Book of Mormon is true. "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost". Moroni 10:4 I promise and testify to you, that if you will read The Book of Mormon, ponder on its message and ask God if it is not true, you will come to know of its truthfulness, whether its true or not true. Remember my friends that God loves you with all his heart, might mind, soul and strength. He wants you to be happy. He knows what you are going through and dealing with right now. He desires for you to return back to Him. Unfortunately, He has been misrepresented and seen as a cruel and angry God who anticipates for us to slip and writes down every mistake we make waiting to punish us by those who do not know or know Him fully. My friends, God has stored many opportunities and blessings for you. He is incredibly eager and desires with all His heart to bless you abundantly. He wants you to live with Him again. He only wants the best for you and your well being. He wants to experience everlasting joy and indescribable happiness in this life and in the life to come. He wants you to partake of His goodness and come and follow Him. The Lord does not care how early or late you decide to come unto Him. I testify to you that if you have strayed and wondered off the path that there is peace and hope in Jesus Christ, The Savior of the world. The Lord accepts those who come unto Him whether your early, late or just in time who desire to change. The Lord will accept you wholeheartedly and forgive you if you are willing to change. The Lord will welcome you and will always be ready to embrace you with open arms. The Lord will lift us up in our trials and use us to bless the lives of those around us if we are willing to change. I promise you that if you will pray to know of their existence, you will come to know whether they exist or have been made up. You are my friends. The Lord loves you and is aware of you and despite all our weaknesses and shortcomings, he still loves us and will forgive us if we will humble ourselves before Him and diligently seek correction and do whatever is needed to repent. Remember that The Lord is always available to talk to through prayer 24/7. No question sounds too silly for Him. James wrote, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" James 1:5. If you must know whether or not something is true or evil and deceptive, you can always pray to God. He will help you know what the truth is and what is not the truth. He will never be too busy to talk to. He will give you strength you need to overcome and conquer your temptations and will give you the strength you need to endure through your trials and afflictions. Paul said that The Lord will not give you temptations that you cannot resist, but that in your temptations, He will provide a way for you to resist, overcome and conquer them. He will provide a way. He wants to bless you and reward you abundantly in Spiritual and physical things. The Lord knows you and will not forget you. You are loved. You are utterly amazing. You have incredible potential. You are not forgotten or ever will be forsaken. You are special. You are unique. You are one of a kind. You have been reserved for this time and The Lord needs you on His side. It simply would not be the same without you. That's just how much the Lord need you on His side. Thank you for your time.
The caterpillars seem to be some species of Swallowtail Butterfly. A number of Swallowtail larvae look very similar to one another, for example; Yellow, Anise, Black. Doesn't matter; as the bounty of beauty is just magnificent. What a luxury you are giving us: so much so that we can quibble over just exactly what species of beauty it is with which you present us.

I love that you let your dog eat some of your harvests. As well as the wild animals that visit your garden, like the birds and the monarch butterflies. It really helps the ecosystem and it is a pleasure to see!

We grew Cherokee purple tomatoes for the first time this summer and, omg, one of the best tomatoes we’ve ever had! Definitely a keeper in our future garden. Love your videos
