Yea, it's a two-part Frant. If the world were a free ride I would give it up - but you gotta buy your way through life, and this is all I got going on. I couldn't make a dime doing anything else these days! I know - I have tried! (Poor Fran is whining again about having to work - There Trolls, now you don't have to bother typing it into the comments) Enjoy!

These young "experts" are just as bad as old experts that are stuck in their own education that they completed more than 20 years before. You might have come across both types through your life. As fellow youtuber, I recognise a lot of your experiences. I am not sure though that it is a ‘youtube or generation thing’. I don’t think I have ever found a shortage of people in my working life willing to give their opinion on subjects they may know nothing about. Occasionally, there are gems in and amongst. When Fran stated that transvestite is a slur, I thought "is it a slur, I don't remember it being a slur". I then realized that I hadn't really thought about or heard the term in a while so things might have changed, so I did some research and found that, yes, it is now considered a slur. It may have been considered a slur for a long time, and i just wasn't aware of it. Kinda. We tend to be drawn to each other, right? Personally I find online communication easier than in person or on the phone because you can't rely on body language both on the transmitting and receiving end. So, you have to think how to convey the message that would normally be expressed by the tone and loudness of voice, posture, distance, gestures, whatnot. It's also asynchronous, which has its set of advantages and disadvantages, and offers more time for processing and analyzing. Again, a double-edged sword.

It's not about generational issues, it's about education. It's the Dunning Kruger effect. People with a minor amount of knowledge (from minutes of "research" online) jump up that initial ramp of "I know how this works", and never go beyond that. As you learn more, you learn how little you know about things, and your confidence on it goes DOWN as you learn, to a certain point. All this boils down to is that you learned quickly, and continued learning to the point that you know there are exceptions to every rule. Most people simply don't get that far on any topic, and even if they do? They don't apply it to the rest of the world. There are plenty of us that sympathize, and appreciate the content you make. You're saying exactly what some old greek philosophers were whining about, back in their time. My experience is that it's an issue spread over all generations. For instance, a greybeard ham radio operator tried to convince me that a USA produced J-37 morse key is most definitely a Junkers (german key, mostly used in the merchant navy). It's not. The Junkers is a radically different design. But nothing could convince him to think otherwise. He was 30 years older than i am. Anyone with a smartphone could just punch in 'j-37 key' and figure out that the Junkers is produced on the other side of the atlantic. I've had such experiences many times with various subjects. If anything, whenever i'm interacting with people younger than i am, they have less issues with admitting that what they said was wrong. Seniority is not a guarantee for having the most correct knowledge. As a side note, i am not doubting Fran's knowledge one single bit and i know damn well how annoying it is when people doubt your knowledge and procedures which are verifiably correct, such as the physically disappearing blue dye in cine film.

I have worked in the film industry, both audio and camera, for many ears and if there is one thing I have learned is it that the "simplest" problems often has the most complicated solutions. Oh, you have a blue tint on your old film... that's easy, you do just have to go through nearly all you know about films ever. Is the blue tint on the roll, glass coating, filters, electronic, the method of transfer, the gear you have transferred to, it's graphical capabilities, your screen, the lightning in your room and 1000 things more. :-) We chased a bug we had where the video quality got worse by heighten the resolution on the recording, it turned out to be the color conversion from our camera and to our new gear, it had a maximum bandwidth usage and when we turned up for the resolution did the colors get reduced, but this was far inside some protocols that had been there from old time and the servers had to run 100% reliable when a new crew came home and connected it to automatic transfer, it was originally the idea that every recording instantaneously should be available for everybody editing the news. (But you can just add some filters, or it has to be your camera's color balance) no Mr smart, it is not that easy! :-)

I had employees call me for support, and when I came to their work space, they started to tell me how I should fix their issues. I simply did what I had to do no matter what they said to me. Very often I asked the person why they don't fix the problem themselves, and then they would usually back off. I had to be careful to not be rude to them, because it was a corporate working environment.

I have a strict personal online policy which is that *I do not interact with trolls*. No if's, ands, or buts. If somebody else is being trolled I'll leave a comment to that person and say so-and-so is a troll and you should never engage with trolls because being ignored drives them crazy. Invariably, said trolls will come after me and keep poking the bear and trying to get me to respond to them, which I simply will not do, and it's quite obvious from their behavior that they desperately want and need a reply from me. I refuse to give them that satisfaction. I learned this as a teenager when my younger sister used to try and bait me, and I discovered that refusing to rise to her bait drove her nuts.

It isn't a generational thing, I'm a retired engineer in my later 60s and people talked to experts back when and tried to tell them how they could do things better. It's not a new thing. Yes! What you said is exactly so. I recently retired, after decades of both engineering and teaching. I taught topics from basic electronics to nuclear reactor protection systems. My one core takeaway from teaching was that "nobody knows nothin'." People live more on tribal knowledge and thinking they know things than on comprehension of the actual way things work. In my experience this is not new phenomenon, but as you said, it seems that nowadays the younger generations are not as willing to listen to someone who has more knowledge than them. Good Video!

I ran 16mm film 16 hours a day while I was in the US Army in the '70s on a RCA film chain system with a pair of TP66 projectors. That was about 2,880 hours, plus another 1500 hours maintaining all the equipment in my year there. I built equipment for NASA that went to the ISS, yet I have people tell me "What do you know about electronics?" My sister tried to put me down, as usual, "You always have to be the smartest person in the room." She can't wrap her mind around the fact that I've worked in engineering most of my life. What is normal conversation for me is over 99% of the population, yet I never try to insult them because they have no reason to know what the acronyms or engineering terms mean. As far as older bosses knowing more than you, I've had many instances where I had to point out a mistake they had made decades ago, and the technicians had to struggle to meet a nearly impossible goal. One instance was where the prototype used a microprocessor the used a pair of 22 pF capacitors with the crystal, but the C we were using required a pair of 200 pF capacitors for reliable operation. Another problem was a test for a parameter of a four quadrant Multiplier. Meeting that parameter lowered the board's performance. No one else had dared to bring up the issue, because it was designed by one of the two engineers that started the company. I had a half hour talk with him. It turned out the Motorola had included it as a measurement in a drawing of how to test for it. I pointed out that parameter was irrelevant, and how much it affected the most important parameters. I was told by my boss, "You've just been banned from Engineering, for life. I told him, "That won't last!" and kept walking. Three days later he came to my cluter of benches and said, "Engineering is on the phone. I went to his desk, to be told that they need my help on an older product. I said, "I'm sorry, but I've been band, and hung u. My boss was turning red when it rang again. He picked it up, answered and handed it to me. I heard, "We can wave it, this time." I said, I want it lifted, and in writing" and hung up again. My boss was about to tell me off. It rang again' Once again, he handed me the phone. "OK, you win." I replied, See? It wasn't that difficult, I'll be right down." I hung up and told my boss, "Support is either two way or not done at all. I often sent them EC Os for older products that were still in production. They refused at first, but they started making the changes. In this case, a customer wanted the product customized for their application, and the engineers who designed it had moved on or retired so I was the resident expert on that line.

It’s a modern day tragedy. Normal person makes videos about their hobby; their videos attract attention; suddenly they’re a RU-vidr; now they have to make content regularly, interact in comments etc… Suddenly there’s a whole new burden. They now have to care about losing subscribers and what content they make, not realising that what originally attracted people is their hobby and enthusiasm. When RU-vidrs start getting obsessed with production values (beyond a decent mic/camera), we are watching a hamster on a wheel rather than an enthusiast and hobbyist…

I love the silver process (B&W or color). While I've been shooting digital for about 15 years, I still have my Sinar F 4x5 and want to get back into silver. I've loved the process for over years, with the hands on demand it required. I worked for a photographic darkroom manufacturing company in engineering and then management and went to schools and colleges to have them maintain their silver labs. It is such an important subject to learn and helps to make connections with the digital process. Some think it's 'old' and that digital is the way. They miss the beauty of the silver image that isn't possible with digital. So, keep up Franting, but don't loose sight of your passions. Dennis from Doylestown

I think generationally, we have a whole group of young people, being raised to communicate socially via a medium that encourages truncation of complete explanations and pleasantries, so instead of "In my experience, (insert incorrect information and how I arrived there)" you just get "incorrect information, zero context". The first one encourages discourse, the second encourages argument.

Fran, You are such a caring person. The negative hits you hard. The world is full of people bashing down others. Being an abuse survivor I am trying to practice to let things out of my control not hurt me. I just let them go and know that the good things I do help others in the world. Your videos are so cool of fun facts and seeing the great exploration of various electronics. Please never give up, the people that support you want you to keep going. You are encouraging to Woman to get into electronics. Back in 1974 when I was in vocational Electronics It was all boys. Even in college it was only a few woman. Please keep going... thank you very much for your work...
