Wikipedia, Bryan Clough. "Anderlecht beat Forest in the 1983-84 UEFA Cup semi finals in controversial circumstances. Several contentious refereeing decisions went against Forest. Over a decade later it emerged that before the match the referee _Guruceta Muro_ received a £27,000 "loan" from Anderlecht's chairman _Constant Vanden Stock_ . In 1997 UEFA subsequently banned Anderlecht for one year from European competition. _Muro_ died in a car crash in 1987."
Just to add insult to injury: when the scandal was finally exposed in 1997 Anderlecht were suspended by UEFA for the next season they qualified for Europe. However, they successfully appealed the suspension on the grounds that it was made by UEFA's Executive Committee, which did not have the authority to issue the ban. Shameless stuff
Good old Anderlecht 🇧🇪 The irony is their chairman would have wasted his money but for the disallowed goal right at the end. They hardly needed any help.
Yes, he was clearly onside when the ball was delivered. Maybe the linesman had flagged so there wasn't much he could have done without drawing unwanted attention to himself by overruling him; and it made him look less like he was fixing it for Anderlecht. There's also a penalty he could have given at 3:30. I know it wasn't justified and would have been very harsh, but no harsher than the one he did give.
May well have been a bribe scandal, but Forest didn't help themselves. They defended way too deep judging by these highlights. On play, they deserved to be well beaten. Van Breukelen stopped up to 5 more goals with some magnificent saves.
Perhaps Spurs were in on it with Anderlecht as they didn't fancy their changes in a final. They used to say that on his day nobody got one past Cloughie.... ?
People are saying Anderlecht were the much better side (i agree Forrest were defending too deep throughout the game) but there was nothing wrong with that goal at the end and its a two legged tie..
Note the commentators laughing when the winning goal was disallowed, they knew it was a farce, as did those of us in that cesspit in Bruges that night. We were also beaten up by Belgian Police for our troubles...."English Hooligans".
No one is questioning the Anderlecht good performance, what’s in question is their player dived! As Brian Clough always professed , “never question the referees decision” & Not one Forest player did! true honest sportsman not cheats like Anderlecht!
@@elmirador8308 But anderlecht only won because of a corrupt referee who was clearly biased. He awarded a penalty for a dive and disallowed a Forest goal for no reason. How many other games did Anderlecht win that season only because of corruption and buying referees.
Surprising that Anderlecht were all over Forest after bribing the ref. Who'd have thought that would happen? It's as if it gave them some kind of advantage....
@@jackthegamer4019 Not sure that was the ref disallowing that goal, that was the linesman giving offside. l' hors-jeu as the commentators saying. I can't see him having the balls to over rule the linesman. The fact is the ref was bribed and if most of the decision are going against you, unduly, then it's bound to effect the way the team plays. Even the first attack in this video, Viv Anderson gets assaulted, nothing is given and Anderlecht allowed to go on the attack with players out of position. If you're not all over the opposition in such circumstances then there's something wrong.
The Musical Gardener Not having it mate. Look plenty of British teams and England have been screwed over . That’s what you get when you’re the most hated Football nation. Course he would the balks you overrule the linesman; if he was bribed he was between a rock and a hard place. Anderlecht were plain better than Forest and played them off the Park.
jack the gamer But the fact is he was bribed and he didn’t over rule the linesman. How could he over rule the linesman from wherever he was standing, he would make the fact he was bribed obvious. Anderlecht admitted bribing the ref in a criminal investigation in 1997. I am not buying that having a bribed official on your side is not going to make a difference.
Assalto vergonhoso do Anderlecht contra o Forest!! Vergonha ! O Forest e outros clubes ingleses estavam dominando brilhantemente os torneios europeus na época e a os rivais desonestos não estavam contentes com isso!
You do Know that the referee was bribed in this game? This is not speculation but the admission of Anderlecht football club itself. The Dago ref was paid the equivalent of £18000 by Constant Vanden Stock, their President, to throw the game. To the eternal shame of Anderlecht their stadium is still named after the cheating bastard.
@@MusicPlaylistsChannel Only in 2019. Almost certainly after my post which is nearly a year old. And then it was only done as part of a new sponsorship deal rather than distancing the club from its corrupt past.
Haha anderlecht didn't win the champions league btw this was the same squad but some left and some transfers came but was this same squad who beat hamburg in the final Then in 1979 to 1980 finals nottigham would have won 7-1
The referee of this disgraceful match was to later die in a car accident. One wonders if the officials who bribed him prior to this match had anything to do with the accident ?
