André van Duin is the biggest comedian in Holland for decades. Now he is a respected serious actor and presenter of very successful tv shows. Everyone loves him!

I haven´t seen this scene of Andre for 15 maybe 20 years and it still makes me laugh as it did the first time. This man is absolutly loved by everybody. He has the gift of comedy, he doesn´t have to say something, just his face expression is enough.... All his co-stars, he worked with, had to break character at some point because he made them laugh by doing or saying what was not in the script

Also Andre never broken his caracter even when his fellow actors broke down laughing on stage he never did

03:16 the word-joke is missed by you due to translation (not your fault offcourse). The captain yells: "geef acht" which is translated "give attention". The letterly translation (for the yoke) would be "give eight" (acht also means eight in Dutch". That's why André replies "I only have one !" (to give) 😉

This is my childhood in a nutshell. André van Duin is one of the most beloved person's in the Netherlands. He was 40 years ago and he still is today. I adore him because he never betrayed himself as being openly gay. For my as a little child he was an role model and he still is. I am almost 50 😂

Superb to see a review from someone who is actually not Dutch! I have grown up with his sometimes hilarious performances on Dutch television, halfway the 80s when I was a kid. Such a pity Frans Van Dusschoten died early, he had a great voice, dry humour and was always known as the 'right hand' of Andre, often not getting the publicity he deserved. I feel he should have been more famous. As a soldier on guard and officer the two set a wonderful parody

Bit difficult to translate. 'Zondernaam' really IS a last name and means 'without name' (zonder naam). When he said 'my mother is a singer' people got the joke but only because they knew there really was a female singer whose name was 'Singer without a name'. There's also been a band 'without a name. Band Zonder Naam, better known as BZN.

With us here in Belgium and Netherlands there was female singer called withoutaname. That's why he said he's mother is a singer.........

A lot of these sketches were written as a premise, a punch line and some general diection. The rest of it was typically improvised.

Some things can't be translated. For example: "Geef acht". "Give attention" is what is meant of course, but "acht" means "eight". That's why he is answering: I only have one. And "Heb jij een rang" (Do you have a rank). In Dutch a rang is a small candy. Therefore the answer: no, but I do have a peppermint.

When he talks about his name; mister No name. It is a dutch joke because there was a dutch lady and her artist name was Singer Without a name.

If Andre would have been born in the USA he would have bee amongst the likes of Stan Laurel and Buster Keaton. We charish this man. Decades of hillarious laughter. It a certain point in life he understood that with his age he should show another side of him. Now he is probably the most loved artist here in the Netherlands. He is so friendly and warm. A very modest and humble man who doesn’t see how special and great he is. Hope we can enjoy him for many years to come

Some trivia about André: André van Duin is his stage name. His real name is André Kyvon (pronounced Keevón), but he was born as André Kloot. His father had the family's surname legally changed because it is 'embarrasing'. 'Kloot' can be translated into 'lump', but also 'testicle'. 'Duin' means 'Dune', and he chose it primarlly because, for dutch people, it sounds very 'common' or 'normal'. He choose 'van Duin' specifically because he grew up in a working class neighborhood in a condo without a garden, so his family used to stay the whole summer at a camping near the beach in Hook of Holland, which is only half an hour by train from Rotterdam, where he was born. He loved it there, because it was out in the open, and he grew up in a neighborhood with narrow streets without parks, and only a few trees lining the street.

It reminds me of something that happened a long time ago when I visited the base nearby. I knew a captain there and they wanted to borrow my horse for some event. So I went there to talk about what should happen when one of the (back then still military service. Is that the right word? They HAD to) soldiers walked by and the captain I was talking to told the soldier to pick something up for him somewhere, forgot what it was. The soldier stopped, just looked at him and said 'something wrong with your hands? Get it yourself!" I almost got into a laughing fit and told him I have the feeling we were not going to win a war with guys like that, lol. The captain said the soldiers couldn't give a bleep what orders he gave them. They didn't want to be there and taking orders was out of the question. They didn't care if they got punished or not. We don't have military service like that anymore. Gee, wonder why, lol.

About 'Without Name'… André replied: 'My mum's a singer!' In that era there was a Dutch lady-singer, Mary Servaes, who had the stage-name: 'Lady-singer Without Name'. She was famous for her interpretation of Dutch 'songs of life'... She was good friends with André, so she wouldn't mind he makes jokes about her name... In English 'perspective', the answer about André's name would be the same hilarious one, if he had answered 'Lynn'. And then: 'My mum's a singer!' 🌺

Little explanation for those whose native language is not dutch. Rang is rank in English, the captain ask what his rank is, but the soldier thinks he asks for a candy which we have here in the Netherlands which is called 'Rang', which comes in a roll. So he offers a peppermint. 'Geef acht' is 'pay attention', but also 'give eight'. So the soldier thinks he has to give 8 riffles.

A lot of the word jokes in Dutch you can't really translate. "geef acht" means to give attention, but literally can mean "give me eight". "without name" is "zonder naam" which was the name of a female singer in the Netherlands "Singer without name" (Zangeres zonder naam). Or the simple "Rank" which is the name of a candy, so hence the reply "I do have a peppermint".

There are do many jokes that get lost in translation or references that you probably don’t understand (like the carnaval joke, in NL the carnaval gets celebrated by people dressing up like all kinds of characters like clowns, animals, cartoon characters etc etc. That was the nose reference. And the “my mother was a singer” joke referred to a Dutch singer from back in the days that goes by the name Zangeres Zonder Naam (translation: Singer Without A Name). Luckily there are still plenty of jokes left that you are able to understand and enjoy. 😅

There is one thing that should be explained based on the subtitles. While the translation of "Geef acht!" to "Attention!" is correct, English speakers might not understand the joke in the answer "I only have 1". While of course it's not what the captain's means, the words in the command "Geef acht!" could be literally translated to "Give Eight!", which the soldier's reply is based on. It's another one of those idiomic issues when you have to translate jokes to subtitle them.

I've been watching a couple of reaction video's of yours on André Van Duin, but what I am wondering about is humor that is lost in translation, and if/how you seem to pick up on it? Also I am not blaming the translation, it is good translation. But certain word jokes, or the intonations with certain jokes are not translatable. There are different kinds of comedy and humor - I often am critical on American (stand-up/juvenile) comedy, them punching into a lot of different directions but not up or themselves. In these sketches they make fun of themselves and a situation, but it is translatable to in this case the military. It says a lot of things about cultures, and sub-cultures. That is a difference in the style of comedy/humor. British humor also is very distinct I think.

This is a great trope used by Dutch and Belgian comedians. Rowan Atkinson did it too in his theater show. You have the comedian and a serious "aangever". The person giving the needs to have a joke. And then they do sketches. It's a great concept.

The last joke, is that the dude is not a soldier at all. Hes at the paleis of the "guarding" it. Since the palace can be visited by the public. The man is just the person who keeps an eye on the toilets. Witch the army captain doesn't notice. Andre van Duinds work is old, but its gold.
