The music was written for Sirtaki by Mikis Theodorakis. The main feature of this dance and music is the acceleration in the rate. The Sirtaki name comes from the word troll a common name for a group of traditional Greek dances
Once on Island Kriti I heard a young man playing the bouzouki where a large group of Greek islander families met, it was so beautiful, totally filled with feelings. I've never heard a bouzouki played like that ever again.
I am so moved to see this video as a musician and as a Greek person.. Congratulations to Andre Rieu who supports all kinds of music as long as it's good music. I wish more artists were like him, because good music and good art is not a particular kind, as it is commonly said, but whatever has soul in it. :)) many greetings from Greece!!! :D
MERCI!
that youtube is a place for brash commentary, not conversations. seriously, though. that guy is such a great violinist, it's too bad he waters down all of his performances with basically "pop" classical music. I'd love to see a video of him playing a paganini caprice or a concerto.
The difference between a good and a prime performer, A good performer plays good, a prime, who knows what he is, feels the resposibility not only to amuse crowds but educate and manipulate his audience through his art. Because art finally is a special sense, regardles if its expresed through music, painting, writing, also politics is concidered by some the queen of arts. Εύγε!
I felt a happier and more joyful person after I listened to this interpretation of Sirtaki.. When life is full of troubles is nice that music like this exists...
I LOVE GREEK MUSIC AND DANCE TOO. I MEET A GREEK GIRL WHEN I WAS LIVING IN AUSTRALIA, HER NAME IS VITÓRIA, SHE IS A GOOD FRIEND. ITATIBA - SÂO PAULO- BRASIL
no matter what they say about money crisis etc. greeks have a unique lifestyle and they will never loose it, the joy and happiness that little things give. Like Goethe said: "Of all peoples the Greeks have dreamt the dream of life best"
I just love this!!! When someone puts a little fun and joy in his/her work, and make it interesting for all. Andre, you are amazing!!!! Greetings from Serbia. :)
THANK GOD THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF PEOPLE WORLDWIDE, THAT LOVE US AND SUPPORT US, AND LIFT OUR BROKEN SPIRIT UP....... THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The song is Zorba's Dance from the movie Zorba The Greek (known as Alexis Zorbas in the UK) Aυτό είναι όπως την ελληνική ορθόδοξη εκκλησία μας κάθε πρωί της Κυριακής! (This is like our Orthodox church every Sunday morning!)
I Love Greece and Greek music and is my honor that I was born, live and grow in Greece ..... We know from fun, music and dance... So come to Greece and join and you feel what fun and good life Greece For Ever
@TeKenguri: There is no need to disscuss history under songs in youtube. Chameria has a name since before the Roman Empire. It is called Epirus and the phrase "Pyrrhic victory" came from Pyrrhos, a king who fought Romans and although he won, he suffered great loses in his soldiers. Just for the record.
SERVUS :-)
I'm a turkish boy and ı love sirtaki greek dance! We can friendly my Greek brothers. yes we can.Forget about the past.Look to the future. peacefull future! from Turkey
@88Hakan88 You are so right my friend...1) Greek music and turkish music is not almost but the same. The deferences are on the surface (interpratating) but the roots are the same. Traditional and folk music idioms are not criticised with national standards, they are observed&interpretated concerning all the social changes of the local populations & the urbanisation.
This is what going to a great performance is all about! People young and old dancing in the aisles, all with smiles on their faces, and forgetting about their troubles just for a little bit. Brilliant!
@riddi111 Hi You are exactly right. i think I have read an interview with Andre where he states he knows he is not the best violin player in the world but he does not want to spend hours on end day after day practising. He wants to do what is dearest to his heart and what he enjoys doing which is bringing joy and happiness to us with his concerts. All I can say is Thank Goodness he does He is wonderful xx
Ohhh i love the Sirtaki. My Godparents are from Greece (wonderful country btw) and whenever we hear the Sirtaki on a Party, we dance to this music. It makes so much fun, even if i can't danc very well XD. Greetings from Germany ^_~
@xarilaos6445 I have no doubt that Theodorakis is a great composer but you should know that zorbas is a synthesis from another composer. The slow part is the intro of "Strose to stroma sou gia dio" composed by George Zambetas. The fast part is a traditional song from Crete.
If you don not love yourself first, do not expect someone else to do it. Love people because is you... Nikos Kazantzakis (writer of Zorba the Greek and Captain Michael and many more books) This music was composed by Mikis Theodorakis for the film Zorba the Greek!
All you bloggers, this is not the place to air your views on politics and history. Leave all that bullshit alone and enjoy the music. What a beautiful melody and the audience appreciates every moment of it, both young and old. Bravo Andre Rieu and JSO, God bless you all. greetings from sri lanka
hahahahaaha I'm Greek and i prefer the original version actually but this is very cool!! hahah!! Great job!! Greetings from Athens,Greece...and....OPA to y'all!! :D
When you think this music was the last scene in a B&W film showing 2 men dancing because the day had literly gone to Hell in a Handbag has captured the hearts of People everywhere and will bring them to their feet where ever it is played, whether by an orchestra or a single instrument such is the power of this music.
@88Hakan88 Sorry Hakan, i like all kind of music, Turkish, Greek, Indian, American, and I am musician, and like cooking, and in Croatia, your soap operas are very very popular, but Turkish music and Greek music are soo different. Different scales, rhytms, melodies, and different food too. The only one but the gratest thing i agree with you is that is enough of wars, political conflicts, hungar etc. We have to help each other, not fight Btw, I like your music more, but also like Greece
