Andrea Gibson writes about this poem, "THE YEAR OF NO GRUDGES":
"THE YEAR OF NO GRUDGES" was written as a love letter to a friend Andrea was furious at. Several months ago, in the thick of anger, I reluctantly began writing down what I most appreciated about my friend. By the time I stopped typing I was so overwhelmed by gratitude I had no room in my heart for a single grudge against him. I'm sharing this poem now as a writing/feeling prompt for you, and for myself, in hopes that we move through our days vigilantly awake to the fact that none of us are ever promised a tomorrow. Whatever needs healing, today is the perfect day. (Music by Chris Pureka)

About Andrea:
Andrea Gibson (they/them/their) is one of the most stirring and influential spoken word artists of our time. Best known for their live performances, in which they regularly sell out large capacity rock clubs and concert halls, Gibson has changed the landscape of what it means to attend a “poetry show” altogether. Gibson’s poems center around LGBTQ issues, gender, feminism, and mental health, as well as gun reform and the dismantling of oppressive social systems. Their live shows, in which they are often accompanied by musicians, have become loving and supportive ecosystems for audiences to feel seen, heard, and held through Gibson’s art.
Gibson is the author of six books. Lord of the Butterflies (Button Poetry), which sold almost 20,000 copies in its debut year, was the winner of the Independent Publisher’s Award in 2019 as well as a Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist. Take Me With You (Penguin, 2018), an illustrated collection of Gibson’s most memorable quotes, was also a Goodreads Finalist. In 2019, they co-authored their first ever non-fiction book, How Poetry Can Change Your Heart (Chronicle Books).
In addition to their publishing accolades, Andrea has released seven full-length albums, combining their socially active spoken word with musical collaborations. They are the winner of the first ever Women’s World Poetry Slam Championship (2008) and frequent World Poetry Slam Finalist.

I am sitting at my table, right now. Bawling. I watched your interview on Style like u, and felt such an immense feeling of gratitude and love. I felt alive and fearless for a moment. And went on with watching some videos of you, because you just make people feel good, you make people feel. And as I listen to this one and the description of this one, I am thrown right into this grief that I have been carrying around for over a year. I have been holding onto grudges and anger and sadness missing the person I thought would always be there. But within all of her rights, she ended our friendship and I have been busy trying to hate her. Now I understand I just have to really love her and let her go. I can chose to see what's still there, not what is missing. (And this is the longest RU-vid Comment I ever wrote and will ever write)

I feel like she may never read this, because why would someone who feels so much risk wandering into the ugly thicket of comments- but i wish we could send her these kinds of comments on the kind of days anyone who knows Gibson's poetry knows s/he suffers - cuz s/he's done more for peace and sobriety than any public figure :/

A part of my soul had dropped inside the abyss of darkness, a darkness of unforgiving black hole, after I lost Cohen..But then, Andrea, I found you.. You help me survive everyday..every moment my depression swallows me whole, I listen to u and comfort myself that butterflies will eventually win in this sky of spitfires.. Thank you..for ur graceful creation..

I could live by this piece of work for the rest of my life, I want to. The way Andrea manages to unravel all the knots in my head in less than 5 minutes and put me a warm blanket, smiling, is just pure magic. And this happens everytime I search for something new from her. Every single time?! Wow. God bless Andrea and her life and each and everyone in the world trying hard and give them enough wisdom and grace to try softer. With love from Pune, India.

OMG ANDREA … you read my mind and then made it poetry. From “try softer” which will be my intention for every day, to bring in heaven and refusing to call it heaven, and it isn’t heaven unless the person who treated me worst isn’t there. I just went through the worst friendship betrays, of my life so far (and I am 70) It was betrayal + gaslighting so it never happened or if it did I told her to, or I made it happen, or it happened but she made restitution or it never happened at all. And then, combined it with I believed somethung thst never happened, so she “lovingly” went to other people, concerned about my well being because I did break once before, after all. And then Loving Spirit showed me no w alike I am to her, how much I wanted to maim her spirit, and how near I need to be to Loving Spirit to be able to make her a video of gratitude for her gifts to me in friendship though I must say we are on a break for now. I did not know when I listened that the subject was grudge, and I am glad I didn’t, because I would have recoiled from the play button. You shoe me poetry is sacred and speaks while trying sifter. May you be … we’ll all of it, today.

I think almost everyone tries hard to do good. And just finds out too late, they should have tried softer. I've never in my whole life been level -headed But the older I get, The more level hearted. And I think we make gods who look like us for a reason. I think in spite of it all, we trust we could... Be believed in When I don’t believe in myself, I try to remember I have walked on water like seven hundred times in Maine in the dead of winter Where I come from you can drive a pickup truck from one side of the lake to the other, And people have an unusually large amount of missing teeth and fingers but you can still sell them whitening strips and wedding rings like crazy Because where I come from, Beauty is in the eye of anyone who sees what’s missing But can't stop pointing to what's still there. If there is no definition for love yet I think that’s a good one. I'm writing this on a day you did me wrong I'm just a half second outside the furnace of my rage And I'm trying to focus the steeple of my attention On all the teeth you still have Instead of the ones I know you’d happily Knock out yourself If it would keep you from biting anyone again. And that’s how mistakes work if you're loving the right kind of people. And you are the right kind of people, You’ve walked on water so many times You know grace is slippery. Theres literally nothing anyone is more likely to fall from Some sound advice I give myself like twice a second, Wear knee pads on the way to your ego, Andrea Being right is boring. Rightness... comforts only the tiniest parts of us And when it comes to hearts I want always to be a size queen Because that’s how I found you- Lifting the spirits of everyone around you Like hot air balloons Just from the way you burn to be a better person today, than you’d been the day before Burning to be better is my favorite quality on anyone And you are on fire Like a gay men’s choir singing the half time show of a football game. I have been dancing in the end zone since the day You taught me How to break every promise I have made to my pain Taught me my wounds won't ever ever be bigger than I am Thank goodness for you Champion of the unkillable yes Dandelion, refusing to be picked for the bouquet Five minutes into our first conversation, you knew I could take a punch better than I could take a compliment And you talked to me about that once, and bam I was angel gossip There were god rumors flying around my suddenly un-heavied head I love you, Because you’ve never had a mirror face Because the truth is nothing you could ever try to fake So Sometimes you look like a human scribble, Like a three-year-old has, Colored you in, like you got too many feelings to stay inside the lines of Your own skin, but that friend... That is the masterpiece I Love You Because we both showed up to kindness tryouts with notes from the school nurse That said we were too hurt to participate But we learned how wrong we were And weren't those the best days? When we learned how wrong we were And so got to grow into our goodness Throwing the peach pits of our old selves Into the garden to grow sweetness Sugar, I pick you To be the captain of my chosen family tree I pick you, to throw the party When I leave this world, knowing I'm gonna run death like a stop sign And keep going. Im going to pick you to finish all my half-written poems Even though you’re -terrible- at writing poetry I’d pick you to finish this one especially This list of compliments, You’d be a hypocrite Not to take, so take it, Before I remember, I’m mad at you asshole...butt wad, only human on the whole planet Who knows what I mean when I say god That I mean everyone Down here Who understands, That when I get to heaven I will refuse to call it heaven If who put me through hell isn’t there.
