Ну такой жалкий Болконский - это перебор. Даже насквозь прожжённая Лили Джеймс и то лучше отыгрывает чувственную невинность, чем этот жиголо, подрагивающий на каждом шагу (он в курсе вообще, как военные ходят?). Только Пьер и хорош
Люди сравнивают с фильмом Бондарчука 1967 года. "Эталоном" фильма, попробуй переплюнь Наташу Ростову на балу, это не реально, она кроме того что очень хороша там была, так еще и стала именно эталоном "Война и мир", как и остальные актеры. Кроме того люди забывают о том что режиссер, актеры и сценаристы зная о существовании шедевра старались дотянутся , не сколько до фильма, сколько до впечатления, до эмоций полученных от просмотра Войны и мира, а эта планка очень высока, куда выше чем просто фильм.
I agree, those glances....both of them. Sometimes I wonder why reality has to be so mediocre sometimes (in terms of relationships, seems people lost romance...not everyone of course. I'm still waiting my Andrej LOL😊) I think he has looks and beauty of ancient times..he is not super beautiful but yet he is very charming and so good looking. I liked his portrayal of Andrej here (and this scene with Lily James is so pure, romantic and beautiful..touches the heart) and also loved his works in other TV serie as Grantchester and more. Wish we could see him around more.

And this is the moment when Pierre finally realizes that he loves Natasha as more than just a friend but she is unattainable to him. Paul Dano's acting was superb in this series. The entire series was phenomenal despite the over abundance of commercial breaks.
Respectfully I have to disagree The impression I got was that he had always loved her - probably since they were children. He never said anything because she was always 'unattainable' He grew up as an illegitimate child with no means of his own or prospect of inheritance. He would have known that there would have been no chance that her parents would have consented to marriage. Even if they had, he is so unselfish that he would not want her to live the very modest lifestyle that he could have provided As soon as he became the count he was caught up in a whirlwind and tricked into marriage before he could process what was happening - again making her unattainable. Here was the first time he saw her fall in love with another man. And any dream he had of being with her probably left him at that point I also think Lily James' (is that her name?) acting was easily the best
To be young and falling in love with someone who feels the same is exquisite. To not have your feelings reciprocated is devastating. Both are depicted here.
Reminds me the first time I met my love when I was young he was wearing completely White and carried beautiful red carnations to me. And then we danced. Today is a good day for me to have good memories for I am old now and he has gone to a better place in the heaven. But I always have beautiful memories of him

Я читала книгу в оригинале и смотрела советскую экранизацию, так как русский язык - мой родной. Там Болконский и Безухов старше, чем здесь, а Наташа очень юна, как и должно быть по книге. Но эта экранизация мне тоже очень понравилась. Бережное отношение к первоисточнику. Видно, что фильм сделан с большой любовью. Герои такие живые! Большое спасибо авторам этого замечательного фильма и привет из России.
на начало романа ---- •Андрей Болконский (~27 лет); •Пьер Безухов (20 лет); •Марья Болконская (20 лет); •Николай Ростов (19-20 лет); •Наташа Ростова (~13 лет). действие романа начинается в 1805 году; заканчивается оно через 15 лет - хотя и не все герои доживают до эпилога. Мывсе читали роман "" в оригинале"-- так как изучали еще в школе. Лучше нашего( советского ) фильма . конечно, нет. Да. можно отметить красивых актеров и т.д. Но передать менталитет. поведение. чувствования героев романа Льва Толстого может только русские актеры и рус. режиссер . Сергей Бондарчук непревзойден!
Мне порекомендовали посмотреть версию ВВС. Я нехотя, с большим предубеждением, начал смотреть сериал. Но увидев своего Пьера, уже не смог остановиться. Сериал ВВС лежит совершенно в другой плоскости. Приятно неожиданной.

the eye contact in this scene is incredible. never for a second did they lose focus of each other and the chemistry is so thick. i'm so heavily invested in their relationship even though they have significantly lesser screentime. what a beautiful couple and the actors did it so well. i also love this era and this age, where people dress up to go to a ball and mutual affection is expressed in such a beautiful way- a dance, a look in the eyes, a touch of the hands. i love this so much.
I like those books and novells. I want those love stories. Big fan of romantic Austen and the drama of Tolstoi, but never, ever would I want to live in those times for real. Just the wealthy ton went to actual balls. Country dances weren't that lavish and like balls, apart from the merriment, realy a kind of marriage market. Politeness was just required between equals. Women were absolut dependent in those times. Wealthy women didn't had to work, but even they had a very limited education, no money or power and had to stay chaste and chaparoned (to stay free of roomers). The cause of this polite courtship was to be perfect, untouched bargening chips, to be married off to the advantages of their fathers and hopefully not to be a burden by attracting the wrong or no suitors. They were practically unmarriagable after the age of 25, also because married women were often reduced to breed children. Their tasks were producing offsprings (preferably males - an heir and a spare), to supervise part of their childrens upbringing, to keep their husbands happy and to make the home hospitable, keeping up appearance,... I wont get started on hygiene or deadly makeup.
It's amazing how heavily invested we grow into their relationship with how little actual screen time they have. They have such great chemistry! Definitely one of my favorite fictional couples.

И пальцем нельзя было тронуть до свадьбы. И на эполеты руку, во время танца ,нельзя было положить. Уже не говоря о том, что актриса, играющая Наташу - с рублем глазу ,как, какая - нибудь, купчиха, а не графиня. А князя актер играет ,как какого - то дешевого соблазнителя, а не героя войны и романа.
This waltz is a masterpiece by composer Tchaikovsky. The delicate and romantic melody perfectly captures the beauty and elegance of the era portrayed in the scene. The actors' chemistry and eye contact make the scene even more captivating.
It's a lovely piece, but the wrong period. Between the Napoleonic era and Tschaikowsky's music lies half a century. The music of Beethoven, Chopin, Strauß senior or Glinka would be the fashion in the early 19th century.
Now that many years have passed, I have to say this is the most accurate and beautiful portrayal of Prince Andrei and Natalia falling in love!!! And I actually read at least 500-pages of "War and Peace". I couldnt wait any longer and watched the miniseries. This movie actually made me a huge fan of Lily James and it's amazing to see how her career has blossomed. No matter how old she gets, whenever I see her in the movies my generation will see her as young, beautiful Natalia from War and Peace. And the music is absolutely breathtaking and it always brings a tear to my eyes to always watch these two fall in love over and over again!!! ❤

@@user-qn3hc7vb3o I have friends in Russia and now i meet a lot of them in Belgrade and i have read more Russians novels than anyone of them. I read all Dostoyevsky's book (Crime And Punishment x 3, Brothers Karamazov x 3, Idiot x 2 and everything else that he wrote), by Tolstoy (Anna Karenina, War and Peace, Resurrection, Kreuzer's Sonata, Father Sergius), Chekhov's several works, Gogol's "Dead Souls", "Oblomov"... Most of them have read a maximum of 3 of the books mentioned. It is a great pity, because the Russian classics from the 19th century are by far the best literary works in history.
This is a quality adaptation of War and Peace. However, it has nothing to do with the great Russian novel. The director of the film took only the plot, without understanding the essence...Therefore, the film istaken as an ordinary adventure novel in an exotic setting. And the characters look like overdressed cowboys and marquee girls. If you want to understand why War and Peace is the greatest novel of the great northern empire, see the film adaptation directed by Fyodor Bondarchuk. Of course, the quality of the film is far inferior to the new digital versions, but the spirit of the series has been preserved and it will impress you from the first shots.
That and this version lie in different planes. These versions are difficult to compare. I had read War and Peace before the release of Bondarchuk's masterpiece on the screens. In that film, Tolstoy's deep philosophy is perfectly conveyed, whilst in this film, subtle human relationships are well conveyed.
@@lavin6915 Essense of Tolstoi's philosophy? - I agree. Yet in the BBC version, difficult human relationships are well shown. This version does not look such a western-wise at all. This should be noted. If those marvellous palaces were had been restored to 1965 after the Second World War great Bondarchuk would surely show them in his film.
James Norton is, without doubt, one of our finest actors today…..whatever the role, he always gives 110%to the part. Always watchable,always “dishy”! Pat R.
You can really read the emotions Natasha is going through while waiting for someone to ask her to dance and then when she's invited by Andrej. I loved Lily in this role, she was amazing.

Элен у Бондарчука вообще неубедительна. Конечно, у Бондарчука присутствует глубокая толстовская философия, впрочем в то время она в фильме показалась мне излишне нарочитой. Хотя с возрастом это ощущение пропало. В версии 2016 попадание в образы по-моему более точное. Пожалуй, только к Наташе Ростовой есть вопросы, может быть, из-за того, что не никак не ожидал увидеть ее блондинкой. Пьер/Пол Дано, по мне, вообще лучший из всех Пьеров. Отлично сыграли старики. Очень хороша княгиня Мария. Впрочем, Толстой потому и гениален, что дал широкое толкование восприятия образов своих героев. Поэтому это лишь мое восприятие увиденного да и прочитанного. И очень хорошо, что оно у всех разное. Универсальную версию, которая бы удовлетворила почти всех, не создать.
I have wondered how Lily James fits so well in historical drama. The answer is she is a classic beauty. She has been in Downton Abby, Cinderella, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and The Exception
meh. not a perfect casting for War and Peace. for Cinderella, she doesn't look that innocent. not as innocent looking as the Maleficent movie's Aurora.

Woud be great if they were open for all 'classes', though, without ruining ones budget on a dress or suit, or uniform. And I'd probably be heartbroken because my bf would never accompany me to one of these, let alone learn how to dance the Waltz...
@The Earl of Warwick I shall not discuss the 'low class' issue with you, for we would not come to an agreement. However, the original comment said these balls should be held 'today' still, implying that modern life would still be the same, except for events and things like this one. Meaning, my bf would still be his not-dancing self with no sense for poetry or classical music.
At least in Germany and Austria, there are many formal-dress balls for New Year, the 1st of May, carnival etc. Even small villages tend to have their seasonal balls in the local town hall or the largest inn. Some of the venues are beautiful historic buildings. And as long as you do not wish to attend the Opera Ball in Vienna, the entrance fee is quite affordable. Even as a student, I did a lot of ballroom dancing and never felt it ruined my budget. Formal dress can be bought second-hand or hired. The problem rather is that mostly elderly people of a middle- to upper-class background attend because younger people are not interested. At the age of 16, boys and girls usually take their first dancing lessons to prepare for their graduation balls. But afterwards, only few continue. Dancing is no longer considered a necessary aspect of our "education", even more so as Tinder has replaced the dance floor as the space where singles make first contact. As a woman, in particular, it is hard to find a long-term dance partner for advanced lessons and balls these days. I am now living in Ireland and glad to have found a few reliable dance partners -- but all of them are my father's age.
Well the "russian nobility" wasn't really russian to begin with, russia has been ruled by foreigners forever - a big part of their nobilitiy wasn't even capable of speaking russian, they either spoke german or french. And let's be honest, the russians only went from one oppressive government to another, the communists weren't better (they were arguably worse imo), they killed millions of their own people who weren't going along with their political agenda, opressed minorites (including jews) and what's worse they tried to spread their misery to other countries. But going from Tsarist russia to soviet russia is like replacing the plague with cholera.

Ah! I've always loved Tolstoy's novels. Something which has always stood out to me is how he specifically writes his"ideal" relationships so purely and so sweetly; they're nothing like the basic, solely-carnal-driven stuff we have out today.
@Noelle M Isn't Andrei and Natasha's love not quite fervent when Andrei is concerned? At the time the age gap is great and he doesn't think highly of her IQ and her immaturity annoys him. Though, ha ALWAYS TREATS HER wonderfully!!! His POV internal monologues-not so romantic. Did I miss something? Btw, I prefer these realistic portrayals of relationships.

I adore this scene the dance alone makes my heart stop every time I watch it. I do love Andrei and Natasha (Lily James is a very lucky woman :D) but at the same time when the camera panes to Pierre and you can just see his heartbreaking when he realises that the girl he has loved forever has fallen in love with his best friend - poor Pierre :'D

"Война и мир" Бондарчука - классика. Но эта версия заставила меня совершенно по-другому посмотреть на это произведение. Такое влюбленное, бережное отношение всей команды сериала. Какой потрясающий Пьер! И эта сцена меня заворожила... Каждый раз я плачу и восхищаюсь этим моментом жизни! Надо любить, надо просто любить и все...
Как бы потрясающие не был снят фильм Бондарчуком, но все же актеры должны быть максимально близки к своему герою по годам. Я ещё в детстве смотрела "Войну и мир" Бондарчука и то что 45-и летний Бондарчук сыграл 20 летнего Пьера меня сбило с толку. Я никак не могла понять как взрослый мужик может вести себя как ребенок. Но вот Пол Дано всё поставил на свои места. Именно юный Пьер мог вести себя так....... Именно этот фильм запал в моё сердце, неприменно молодой актер должен играть юного Пьера, а не как в нашем фильме. Пол Дано здесь на своём месте, для меня он "сделал" этот фильм. Потрясающий подбор актеров!!!
Мне этот сериал тоже очень понравился. Так красиво все передать. Они действительно прониклись нашим произведением. Операторская работа тоже на высоте. И свет и музыка.

I love this scene, it's so romantic...sweet and dreamy. I really loved this TV serie by BBC, it was so very well done. Everything from costumes, actors and locations were simply perfect. A beautiful but sad story, I read Tolstoj's book years ago and loved it very much; he was a great writer. Russian literature is very interesting (I read quite some books), they have a great cultural heritage.

@@TatyanaLACKY Я говорю больше о Пьере. Что касается Тихонова и Савельевой... Понимаете, в далеком 1966 году в школе проходили "Войну и Мир". А у нас был великолепный энтузиаст-словесник Николай Васильевич, заслуженный учитель. Поэтому роман в классе вовсе не "проходили" с заучиванием "дуба", как это обычно бывает в школе. Тут же подоспели первые две части экранизации Бондарчука. Был организован поход в кино. В общем, Николай Васильевич, посвятил тогда два урока фильму. Вышло так, что я сначала прочел роман, а потом посмотрел фильм. Мягко говоря, фильм классом, а особенно преподавателем был встречен неоднозначно. Больше всего, конечно, досталось Пьеру: "И разве это Пьер!?" Досталось и другим персонажам. Наш словесник сразу сказал, что в роли князя Андрея куда убедительнее бы был тот же Лановой, который действительно великолепно сыграл Анатоля. (Да и сам блистательный Вячеслав Васильевич был далеко не в восторге от роли князя Андрея.) Не понравилась Николаю Васильевичу и сцена на балу: " Помилуйте, ну, почему у Наташи слезы, когда бал едва только начался? И зачем закадровый текст из романа? Без него, что, получилось бы менее убедительно? И отчего Пьер на балу, словно аршин проглотил? В книге не так, не так." Этот урок у меня до сих пор стоит перед глазами... С тех пор прошло много лет. С годами тогдашняя критика стала мне самому казаться излишне придирчивой. И, действительно, киноэпопея оставило глубокий след и у меня. Но говорить, что лучше уже и не поставить, и не сыграть - это оставаться в плену стереотипов. Во всяком случае, в версии 2016 получился именно тот Пьер, который у меня отложился после первого знакомства с романом. Да и княжна Марья, в советской киноверсии отодвинутая далеко на задний план, здесь хороша. Даже князь Василий здесь не выглядит конченым злодеем. А ведь и Толстой увел этот образ от ходульности. Надо просто посмотреть все четыре серии киноверсии ВВС и лишь потом делать выводы. Конечно, это лишь мое субъективное мнение. Уж не обессудьте.
"fell for that Anatole shit" isn't completely fair. Lost her head, lied to herself, tried to cover up the pain inflicted by the Bolkonsky's, these do Natasha little more justice. True, it would have been better if she were wiser. But wisdom is innocence fully developed. She gained it. Because she was innocent. Andrei should have known she was innocent. I should have known.
In the book Andrei knew Anatole as a totally vain and stupid person. Anatole was incredibly handsome and that was the only good thing about him. Bolkonsky just couldn’t stand his beloved Natasha left him for someone who deserved only despise. I guess that’s why Andrei could not forgive Natasha.

I made my resolution to read the book before I gift myself by watching this movie. Lily James is my ultra favorite actor and after seeing this I better hurry and read the book. I wholeheartedly wish her to win an Oscar some day. She also has a beautiful voice.

Мне понравилась экранизация. И Пьер, и Андрей, и Наташа попали в образы. Пол Дано идеальный Пьер. Наша экранизация с Тихоновым в роли Андрея тоже очень нравится. А вот Пьер- Бондарчук не понравился. И наша Наташа-Савельева чудо как хороша. Но и английская экранизация снята с большим уважением и любовью к роману, приятно удивили.
Да, самым большим разочарованием той советской киноэпопеи стали Пьер Безухов и Элен. И образ княжны Марии получился слишком второстепенным. По мне, лучший Пьер - Пол Дано. Даже в этом эпизоде он великолепен.Эх, прокатить бы его в машине времени в 60-е... и обратно.
Lily James and Paul Dano are phenomenal pitch-perfect choices for this. War & Peace is a novel made to be re-interpreted and re-appreciated for modern environs, and adapted and re-adapted, and I hope we’ll see some ambitious director take a crack at it the way Bondarchuk did some years in the future because man this deserves to enchant future generations that perhaps might never read the book
