Why would we let F1 makes millions off the American fan base, and let all the European car manufactures make billions in our country, then have them turn around and spit in the face of our largest auto manufacturer and America's most prized racing family? Couple of points I'd make: * The US government is massive, and the focus of the government isn't such a finite resource that getting Congress members onboard with ensuring Liberty Media (an American company) isn't stifling American jobs and entrepeneurship means taking *away* from other things Congress can *and should* be focusing on. Mostly, Congress passes things like Andretti's complaints off to Bureaus of apolitical entities whose job it is to enforce these things. * To any Andretti detractors complaining about this, I'd challenge them to show me *any* F1 team who wouldn't and doesn't regularly go to the Stewards with rules technicalities and challenges to ensure they are getting the absolute best advantage for their team. Andretti's tactics here are 100% in keeping with that, and shows that Andretti aren't the type who are naive enough to think that everything is solely resolved "on-track" so to speak. Andretti are playing for keeps and ready to go.
@paulbrennan2018

Excellent tactics! Threaten f1's potential market and growth. The U.S. could block them from competing within the States. Dilution is one type of loss, but nothing compared to the actual loss of the U.S. market and fanfare. That's pretty much guaranteed Andretti a place on the grid! I'm delighted such actions are being taken to make F1 answer up and be accountable. If Andretti can employ devious strategies as such, they'll do great in F1! P.S. I'm not from the U.S. I just want F1 to grow and become more exciting!

The Fact they said their name wouldn't "Bring any value to the sport" is such a big insult to the Andrettis too. Mario Andretti was prestigious during his time in F1 and he's been in so many sports afterwards too. The dude is a master behind the wheel in any car he can get in, and you can't say that to about anyone who has ever raced. If Andretti can get into F1 it would bring in loads if not more viewers to the sport especially more american viewers. Given the time needed to race and make adjustments and upgrades, Andretti can be a contender for the championship in F1

Andretti has been a huge name in American racing for all of my 65 years. Mario himself is 84 years old and won the F1 championship when I was 20. As you said he's a household name, but maybe a bit more than that, and in this case a source of pride. They did everything the FIA asked them to in order to make application and as you said, it should have been said and done by now. It's not about "hur dur 'Merica stickin' it to those stuffy Europeans" - for Andretti it's all about the actual racing. The cash is of course necessary but GM seems to have a few spare bucks laying around. And this isn't Ford trying to beat Ferrari, nothing like that. That was personal, to a large extent while this situation is purely the business of racing. Getting the government involved, yeah maybe some people think it's overboard, but FOM really didn't give them any options, just a flat "no" for no good reason. Where's the appeal board? Well they found one. The Andrettis are racers, fighters, what the hell do you expect? Maybe they join and are back markers for a decade, then all of Europe can crow about the shitty American race team. But even lowly Haas has scored race points, so I doubt a GM-backed Andretti team would end up at the back.

As an American racing fan, I've got to say that the European F1 execs have no clue as to how big a hornet's nest they're stirring-up! Mario Andretti isn't just a legendary driver, he's the closest thing in America to auto racing royalty. He, his family and his company have won at every level of the sport that they've ever tried their hand at, and GM is the largest US auto manufacturer and one of the largest in the world. When GM throws its weight around politicians of all stripes listen! When I was growing up it was common to hear, "as goes GM, so goes the nation." Meaning that when GM was doing well, so was the US economy. For GM to even commit the financial capital and engineering resources required to enter F1 after many decades of not showing any direct interest in motorsports, proves to me and many other Americans that they are extremely serious about this. They want to prove that their engineering is on par, if not better than the best in the world, and to use victories in F1 to sell cars in new markets and at home. As they say, "win on Sunday, sell on Monday." The legal fight that was started by AJ Foyt in the CART - Indycar split decades ago will look like a fly on a windscreen compared to what will happen here if F1 doesn't change its course. Not only can I see antitrust legislation introduced to break up F1, but I can also see this devolving into a trade war between the US and Europe. I can easily see American legislators deciding that if F1 won't allow an American team to compete fairly, then we'll place steep tariffs on the EU companies that are behind the F1 teams. I've seen tariffs placed on other imported items for more ridicules reasons! For example, we here in the US haven't been able to purchase a Toyota Hilux or any other small pickup manufactured outside of North America for over a generation, because of the "chicken tax." Since the mid 1960s a 25% tariff has been imposed on any light duty truck imported into the US from outside of North America. This tariff was originally levied in retaliation to European countries banning or placing tariffs on chicken exported from the US. To this day these light duty vehicles are not imported here because the added tariff would make them considerably more expensive than competing and even more upscale vehicles manufactured within North America. So my advice to F1 is to take heed. Andretti and GM aren't playing, and this could get ugly quickly!

Andretti didn't “go to Congress", he was interviewed by Martin Brundle on his grid walk and he Said that some Congresspeople invited him to discuss it. AFAIK, Liberty Media is an American company so anti-trust laws apply and even if they weren't, anti-trust still applies since they and F1 do business in the USA. Is team sports like American football, baseball etc get exemptions to antitrust because of tradition/practicality (you can't just have a random number of teams in a league) but that doesn't historically apply to racing. In racing, you show up with a legal car you get to race. Also, historically *that's how Formula 1 worked too*... This “franchise”/Concord business is not traditional... BTW, US courts have taken up sports issues before, for example in the America's Cup where have had cases specifically about who could or could not compete. So I always thought this could end up in courti just didn't think it would end up in politics.

I'll put another question on the table. Let's assume that another brand is remotely considering to enter F1. A return of Toyota, for example. And then, 'Toyota' is seeing this breach between FIA and FOM. How a brand that's racing competetively on almost every other league except WRC is denied on the basis that it's not relevant enough. I fully understand that the way the FIA pushed for this was bad, and the FOM is probably reacting to that. But the consequences of this rejection could mean the end of another global brand joining in. Ford is surely having some serious second toughts after all that happened with GM going full send with a new entry. If the Red Bull Powerplant won't work, Ford will either have to buy Racing Bulls, or pull out, because a new entry will probably being rejected.

But honestly, if FOM/FIA/Liberty Media don't want Andretti Autosport, then I say take all of the F1 races in the US off the calendar. We don't need the arrogance. We have the INDY 500 which lately is a much better race than F1's crown jewel in Monaco where there's NO PASSING. Indy car can take over the venues where F1 was racing (COTA, Miami, and Vegas). They can sue all they want. F1 needs the US market more than the US needs F1. Without our consumption, European manufacturers won't really sell more cars than what they do. F1 isn't holding a race in Central America per se. We love our open wheel racing. The fear is that Cadillac/GM will have reliability and power that can rival Red Bull and MB.

I think if this escalated quickly then maybe the US won’t let a US, Miami, or Las Vegas GP for a season, then that would make F1 lose there marbles.

The Fact that you have "Outside Pressure" on the "Good Old Boys Club" that is F1 is honestly good in my opinion. Ive been aware of F1 most of my life, kept an eye on it from the time Red Bull joined and really following it since 2018. The US has 3 Grand Prixs and 1 Driver (who probably won't be on the grind after the summer break). It is Owned by an American Company but Has No American Team (Hass is a European Team with an American company as a Titel Sponsor lets be honest here) and when you break down the Prize winnings at the end of the Season it Doesn't matter where Ferrari end up they Still are taking home almost Half the total prize pool because they have had a team Consistently in the sport from the beginning. The Way F1 is Currently set up it Only Benefits Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes. McLaren are a Subsidiary of Mercedes same with Williams. Hass is run by Ferrari, same with Sauba, Red Bull has 4 cars over 2 teams and then Alpine... The Sport is just 3 People that control everything. As an American i would like to see an American Team.

And than, at later you decide to join in the fun with your own toys - that are a match or maybe better than theirs - and you say "Hey, can I (we) join in? We have the most advanced toys, too.." They got one of the biggest automotive manufactures in the world backing them, they even built facility's in the UK, they aren't some unknown team, they have a team in Formula E, Indy, wouldn't be surprised if they go into NASCAR. The name "Andretti" is even written down in F1 history. Idk if you've ever heard of Mario Andretti, but he won the F1 WDC in 1978 with Lotus. They've gone through every step to get into F1, even being accepted by the FIA. Just to get denied by F1/Liberty Media. So please tell me what Andretti should do to get in without backing by the US government.

I doubt forcing their way into the sport by having a government bully them in is the best way to go, and as liberty/Dom has the commercial rights of the sport, surely they should be allowed who they decide to showcase and so on? That said Andretti itself was getting bullied to begin with cause the whole project. “ you need to update your facility” than Andretti built two state of the art facilities one in the motorsport valley of open wheel racing in USA and the other is at THE motorsport valley of the UK .” You don’t bring a manufacturer” than brings in GM as a technical partnership. “ they’re a glorified sponsor, we need you to build a in house engine rather than rebadging a Renault PU as Cadillac “ than they announce to join Audi in 2026 as an actual PU manufacturer. “ you don’t even have a car designed “ than release a design and promise to build it by the end of this year. I think this is the biggest reason why Congress is getting involved. Also its one of many things on their agenda its not like it takes up their entire focus, we had a whole UFO investigation going on not so long ago in Congress. Congress is looking at this because you have a US Media owned organization that is enriching only themselves and foreign owned franchises and then being anti-competitive by restricting an American owned franchise from participating. Liberty Media owns Live Nation which is already facing antitrust scrutiny. This just seems to be a further extension to that.

OK SO The US Congress is involved for a couple of reasons, legitimate reasons, here. 1 - Fair access to markets. This looks *a lot* like F1 is denying Cadillac access because they're pissy about them selling Caddis again in Europe and teams like Merc, AM, Alpine, and Ferrari are blocking them to combat this. Those manufacturers largest market, by *far and away* is the US, you can damn well be sure the Americans are going to demand equal access to Europe. 2 - F1 does business in the US, if they do not have any *actual, legitimate, legal reason* for Andretti do not race, they're probably going to be in some hot water. The reality is that HAAS *continues to exist* and so long as they do, it's obvious F1 is playing favourites. 3 - US Automakers, specifically The General and FoMoCo are the most influential parts of US politics aside from Lockheed-Martin and Wall St. The Gist is that F1 hasn't played fair here and Andretti is done playing fair as well. They've jumped through literally every absurd hoop and got denied because...well they just don't like them very much. That's not good enough and now the Andretti's are throwing their weight around. Good on 'em.
