|| Mystery song of the day ||
Meet the son of a government man
And a pillar of salt
I was born with blood on my hands
And have all the signs of a bleeding heart
Living high on a giant hawk
On a mountain so steep
Keep your head in a hollow log
As the ruling fog are about to creep
What have we done?
How'd we get so far from the sun?
Lost, lost in an oscillating phase
Where a tiny few catch all of the rays
Out beyond the western squalls
In an Indian land
They work for nothing at all
They don't know the mall or the layaway plan
Dig yourself a beautiful grave
Everything you could want
Maybe those invisible slaves
Are too far away for a ghost to haunt
What do we charge?
Letting go of a claim so large
Oh, all of our working days are done
But a tiny few are having all of the fun
Get used to the dust in your lungs
Is there no way down
From this peak to solid ground
Without having our gold teeth
Pulled from our mouth
Make me a drink strong enough
To wash away this dishwater world they said was lemonade
Walk with me after the show
Maybe we can find a way through the minefield in the snow
What are they charged?
Letting go of a claim so large
Oh, all of our working days are done
But a tiny few are having all of the fun
Apologies to the sick and the young
Get used to the dust in your lungs

you practically nailed it on the head. one of the lines that stuck with me even after walking out of the theater was “I always wanted brothers”. All Peter 3 wanted was a family, people to love him, understand him, and more importantly, help him through the hard moments in his life, specifically Gwen’s death. In No Way Home, Peter 3 gets all of that. He gets to interact with two individuals very similar to him, who help him move past his self-destructive, insecure mindset and give him the chance to redeem his biggest failure: not being able to save Gwen Stacy. Peter 3 finally found his perfect family, people he could relate to and be completely honest with. The little boy who lost his parents finally had two brothers to not only play with but help him get through his trauma without any judgment or expectations, despite ultimately having to say goodbye to them. Now knowing they are out there may be enough to keep him going. plus, the choice to have HIM be the first one we see in NWH is perfect, because of what Gwen said in TASM2: "my wish for you is to become hope." and he did. his entrance at the moment when the story is in its darkest hour is literally symbolizing hope is returning to the story.

Tobey’s Spider-Man had a big anger problem in Spider-Man 3 as Andrew Spider-Man had a big depression problem in TASM 2. Tobey helped MCU Peter not to be consumed by anger as Andrew helped MCU Peter not to be consumed by depression.

Well we don’t know if MCU is or isn’t depressed. I guess maybe depression for you is represented by whether Peter puts on the suit. I’m pretty sure MCU Peter is depressed af. I’d like to say you are right but Peter quite literally served the biggest punishment above Tobey and Andrew.

I was the same. I stayed away from anything relating to Spiderman on the web. It really was such a great way, and how they made it matter, not just fan fare was spectacular.

Electro is every lonely 20 year old's middle age nightmare. He's balding, socially inept, mistreated and forgotten about, and makes pretty women uncomfortable. He's alone and angry at the world, and is so far beyond hope of ever connecting with anyone out there in it, that he'd rather destroy himself with his obsessions... like Batman. Or like this version of Spider-Man. Plays well into his remark about how good it feels for him to look more attractive in No Way Home. It's like he got his lost time back.

I am glad that after No Way Home, more and more people are appreciating Andrew's portrayal as Spider-Man. I have been one of those few people who actually love Andrew's Spider-Man films since the first film was released. Yes, I am well aware of what most people would say about his films, especially the sequel. But there is something remarkable about his films that I found more special. Thanks to your video essays, now I know what is that. Andrew's portrayal of Peter is very deep. He was able to personify and reflect on Peter accordingly in a whole different perspective than how Tobey and Tom did. He is such a brilliant actor and his Spider-Man films will always be special to me personally. Also, you have always been making such exquisite quality videos, keep on doing what you do. Much appreciation from me!

I'm really loving the appreciation that the Webb movies and Andrew Garfield Spider-man has gotten. I initially held off on watching TASM2 for years cause I heard it was "the worst one" and I watched it in preparation for NWH and was incredibly impressed by how much it resonated with its themes and performances (It's now in my top 3 Spider-man films easily). It was heavy with plot lines that were set up for extended universe content (I like the Richard Parker scenes but in the theatrical cut they felt slightly arbitrary to the film's plot) BUT the things Peter went through were some of the most poignant moments of any Spidey movie and I'll stand by that. By which I mean him continuing on helping the world as Spider-man after losing Gwen and listening to her speech.
@hunterlawrence3573
@hunterlawrence3573 2 года назад
The same thing happened with me! I watched both Spider-Man 3 and TASM 2 for No Way Home when for years I'd been hearing how bad they were. I thought Spider-Man 3 was okay. I didn't hate it, but a lot of aspects were disappointing. (Though I don't get why everyone complained about the Emo Dance; Bully Maguire is the best thing to come out of the whole movie). I was really worried about TASM 2, but I found I really enjoyed it. It's far from a perfect film, but as a Spider-Man movie it's a pretty good one

@@hunterlawrence3573 I think I avoided TASM2 cause I really liked TASM1 and while the movie was out I knew they were going to kill Gwen and I heard people say the film rushed the tragic moment where Gwen dies. I assumed it meant the impact wasn’t going to balance out the horrible event, but I think that notion was entirely incorrect. The introduction to Harry and the Green Goblin WAS rushed (in the comic Norman was a villain who Peter neglected outing and throwing in jail like he should have cause his best friend was Norman’s son and Norman had Green Goblin as an uncontrolled dissociative identity, making Gwen’s death Peter’s fault on more than one level) but the impact of the death was given adequate time and pathos. It was sudden and devastating… and frankly traumatic to watch and think about. In the comic, Gwen was unconscious for the moment she was thrown from the bridge and Peter was physically distant from her the moment she died. In TASM2 she’s conscious and aware and looking up at Peter desperately and terrified, seeing her life pass before her eyes, knowing that she’s about to die. Peter’s trauma and heartbreak was devastating and frankly insurmountable; so seeing her speech give him the strength to carry on was an incredible moment that showed how much she left an impact on him and Webb went out of his way to show how important Gwen was to him. I think the movie got as much hate as it did cause no one wanted Gwen to die (even comic fanboys who knew it would happen or fanboys who preferred Mary Jane, probably couldn’t help but feel upset by the end because the Webb Gwen was so effortless to love and Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield made the romance so believable) and it’s something that just doesn’t happen in superhero films. They never end on such a severely melancholy note and the love interest doesn’t die. It’s a huge risk thematically cause you leave the audience exiting the theater feeling heartbroken. And the response is unsurprising. I remember a similar thing happening with another movie I really enjoy (this one is more of a cult classic) Van Helsing since it too had the love story end in a tragic way. Perfectly solid movie, bad rep cause it ended as the hero mourned his lost love.

@@Nightman221k I agree with a lot of what you said. Honestly, I think the dumbest thing in TASM duloagy is that they had Peter make that promise to Captain Stacey and then killed Gwen in the sequel. They should’ve done one OR the other. They should NOT have done both. Gwen dying after her father’s last wish to protect her takes some of the focus away from where it should be, which is her own story. If Peter hadn’t been dating Gwen, she probably would’ve been there anyway to help defeat Electro, so the fact that they were together shouldn’t make a difference in that sense. Gwen died a hero; if not for her, hundreds of people would’ve died. Yet the movie never acknowledges that. Instead, because she died after Peter decided to break his promise, it looks like she died BECAUSE Peter broke his promise, which isn’t the case. Not only does it make Peter look like kind of a jerk, but it also undermines Gwen’s agency. You can’t necessarily blame Captain Stacey; he was protecting his daughter. But she’s right when she says it’s her choice whether or not she wants to take the risks. And it was her choice to risk her life helping Peter save the city. That promise makes it more about Peter’s actions than hers. I do think Gwen’s death, as well done as it was, likely contributed to the movie’s negative reception. As audiences we expect superhero movies to have happy endings. It’s part of the genre. Infinity War was able to end in defeat because it was the culmination of a decade of buildup. And at that point people knew the MCU well enough to realize that the story wasn’t actually over, even if the movie was. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, on the other hand, had to rush into a happy ending because the love interest just died and they couldn’t end the movie on a low note. Not only is Gwen’s death incredibly sad and a bit of a controversial decision, especially among those not familiar with the comics, but the span of time between that and the credits is the only portion of the movie I think is just plain bad. The closing, (I don’t know, 10 minutes, maybe?) leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Although I enjoyed everything leading up to that portion, I do think there are other problems with the film. But it’s easy for a bad ending to alter one’s perception of the entire movie, which I think is a major reason behind the film’s poor reception. But hey, the alternate version was even worse, so at least they didn’t use that. (Also, weirdly this film has no post credit scene, for some reason? They had so much to set up and so many story lines to follow up on. Post credit scenes are the perfect way to do that without affecting the main movie) Gwen’s death is really similar to Harry becoming the Green Goblin, for me. I knew both were going to happen before watching the film, yet I was rooting against those things so hard! Even if you already know it’s going to happen, Gwen’s death is so tragic because she had her whole life ahead of her. She was going to go to Oxford, have a life with Peter, continue being one of the best love interests of any superhero movie, etc. Then suddenly it was all gone. The same thing kinda happens with Harry. He discovered Oscorp’s secrets, he was horrified by what happened to Max, he was pretty much on the path to becoming one of the heroes. Then Oscorp (headcanon: it’s run by Hydra) frames him, and he accidentally turns himself into a monster. He’s probably the most underrated character in all the Spider-Man movies.

@@hunterlawrence3573 I agree with what you wrote and it was fun reading your observations. I personally feel like Marc Webb had something special with Andrew and Emma in the roles and it would've been a smarter decision to keep Gwen alive. It'd be a hard sell for any superhero movie to have two movies worth of investment in a romance only to try to move on in the next movie. I'm incredibly thankful they nixed Mary Jane from TASM2 for that reason. I liked just being able to focus on a couple I really liked without a replacement woman just waiting in the wings. I didn't think the 10 minutes of showing how Peter is paralyzed by loss was bad. But I guess that it would work better to focus fully on the hero being grief stricken enough to not continue life as a costumed hero. And I 100% agree with you about Gwen's heroism being sort of glossed over since she did give her life to save lives. Speaking of I really have trouble seeing TASM!Peter being able to believe he could have a girlfriend and be Spider-Man after Gwen was taken from him in such a sudden and traumatic way. He and Gwen were doing everything right. He was honest with her from the start, he tried to protect her, they worked together as a team to defeat the Lizard and Electro; then Harry (Peter's FRIEND, someone he never expected would be an enemy) showed up and killed her specifically to hurt Peter in the worst way. How could Peter expect that a future love could work out when Harry is still alive and no precautions he or Gwen could have prevented what happened? I personally think it'd just be nice to have a healthy couple as a superhero duo like how Gwen and Peter were. It's not really very common at all to see.

there was an alternate scene in ASM2 where after gwen dies Harry laughs at and mocks Peter so Peter turns around and beats him to death. this possibly making "I stopped pulling my punches" take on a more literal meaning. I also noticed andrew had the goblin serum and wasnt as as quick as tobey to try and stop tom from killing Norman. I thought this was weird the first time I saw the movie (and it even pissed me off when tobey got stabbed bc of it) but I think that was deliberate like he still blames the Goblin for killing gwen and now May and for a moment he was gonna let Tom have his revenge but after seeing the consequences he realizes its his responsibility to save goblin to save Harry in a way. Andrew throwing the serum to a version of himself that saves goblin rather than killing him and seeing him have both his gwen and Harry was the meaning of that nice catch nice throw moment.

I think if Andrew's Peter Parker was named something else then TASM would be so much better. And also problems with a film for me is not whether a character is comic accurate, it's whether that character is believable. TASM felt so real compared to the raimi trilogy or the MCU trilogy, despite the whole lizard bs and all. Which is why it's is one of my fav spider man movies

Can you do a video about your expectations for Spider-Man: Freshman Year? It seemed they changed his origin in No Way Home so probably we will not get Spider-Man letting a robber go and this same guy killing his uncle. I think Uncle Ben will be murdered and Peter will feel bad he was not a hero earlier and it was just using his powers for money. What do you think?

Don't take lower viewer numbers to heart. It's all about the subject, not the quality of your videos, they are always impeccable. I'm not a DC guy, just can't get into it, and I like Joker even less than Justice League.

You should try getting into some dc shows Instead of the movies or the animated dc movies those are great

I have a big issue with the depiction of Gwen yelling at Peter and demanding that he acknowledges her independence and free will to help him fight Electro in the power station. She's written as an unreasonable, emotional and stubborn character in that scene, who as an untrained civilian would walk head-on into a superpowered war zone (which is already a hazardous high voltage site) just to put her foot down as an independent woman. It doesn't do Gwen justice, and her stubbornness predictably leads to harm and ultimately to her death.

That what makes her death even more sad, it was peter fault that she died.

@@infiniteapex8762 Did you not read what I wrote or watched the movie? She practically emotionally blackmailed him to let her stay and help. Since she demanded to be there she's also responsible for her own demise.
