Gerard being given the ring back and hearing the distant echo of Christine's singing as she exits the cave and a tear rolls down his cheek is one of the most powerfully cinematic moments I have ever seen. It's in that moment that he realises that she is in fact the true Phantom of the Opera - in that he will never be able to hold her again or hear her sing another sheet of his music. The most vital piece of his music and life is truly gone and he is condemned to spend the rest of his life contending with that heartbreak. Such a powerful moment.
I'm a hopeless romantic, so I adore "The Phantom of the Opera". I've also been a recluse for most of my life, in part due to Asperger's Syndrome...so I have a great deal of compassion for the Phantom himself. Yes, he allowed his anger to drive him to murder, which isn't good at all...but his initial motivation was a pure love for Christine. It was only when she chose Raoul that the Phantom's fear of being left alone drove him to madness.

Thanks so much for uploading this interview -- it's a treat to hear a more extensive discussion on the film from Joel and Andrew. I especially liked hearing Joel confirm that "in another time, another place [the Phantom and Christine] could have been lovers" because that's what I've always believed especially after watching this adaptation. I also loved hearing Andrew's praise for Gerard's voice as the Phantom -- I think Gerard did a fantastic job and deserves much more appreciation for what he was able to accomplish.
I feel like I relate so much to both Christine and Erik. I can relate to the way he gets lost into music and the way he has been pained by those who are supposed to love him and seeing himself as unlovable. I can relate to Christine in the way she tries to love the best parts of someone and to be mentally and emotionally dependent on someone who doesn’t really exist (her angle of music).
Excellent interview with two highly respected professional individuals. I think the movie is wonderful, though I would have liked a little older Christine even though Emmy did a great job. I only saw the play once and never noticed the differences of the chandelier drop between the play and the movie. Schumacher is a great director to have pull this all together.
This movie is an incredible gift to those who will never get to see the play again, and future generations who will never see it at all. Now we can watch it again and again, and be enmeshed in the beauty of the music and romance forever. If I had my way, there would also be professional visual recordings of dozens of the stage versions, and most especially the original London production. Alas, those epic experiences live only in the memories of the audiences.

i can't stand people bashing the actors and the director! they all did an amazing job, especially Gerard Butler! if you don't understand beauty and emotion, then yeah maybe it wasn't the best adaption. But Emmy Rossum, Gerard Butler, Patrick Wilson and Joel Schumacher gave everything they had and really made this as good as it could be! ALW made the best decision by working with Joel and waiting for the right time and getting the right actors. that is my opinion and i know that I am not the only one! I am one of many! If you don't like my opinion, ignore it. that is how i feel and this movie is what made me fall in love with this story!
It's a great film! I ❤️ it! I'm a theatre fan, but I think this particular version is better, the acting can be a little ott in the theatre (but to each their own). You're absolutely right, the cast, the director, the sets, everything was amazing.
@@GamingSaturnMoonManBoy Well, ALW obviously wasn't carrying that comparison in his head, and thank God for it too. I've never seen the stage musical, but I remember another interview where ALW said he liked Gerard Butler in "Dracula 2000". He also thought of the Phantom as an unconventional singer, so he likely didn't want to cast someone who sounded like they had a ton of training. Otherwise, it would have sounded too stylized and artificial.
There is actually a film adaptation of the book that came before the 1925 Lon Chaney Sr. version, but it's lost. It's German and called Das Phantom der Oper but is also known as Das Gespenst im Opernhaus. But like I said, it's completely lost :(
It’s also a little reminiscent of the French film La Belle et la Bete. I wonder if that was used for inspiration at all. There is some connection between the kind of visuals that work for a musical and those that work for silent film.
YES, people never seen to fucking get this at all, this is part of why i hate this movie, it makes the phantom seem like a good idea to date, when he should be more of a 'i dont know if should' kind of person, also Gerard cant sing
Schumacher has a tendency to get lazy. I think he'd make a good behind-the-scenes guy. Judging by his worse movies (of which he has far more than good), he seems to loose interest in what he's shooting almost immediately. For example, I thought the Overture scene in POTO was great... And yet, minutes before that, he makes a really lazy choice of putting in advertising AND making an overly long introductory scene that does absolutely nothing except fill time. He also has an awful team if they thought Gerard Butler was a good choice. The fact of the matter is, the guy can't sing higher than a baritone. He wasn't trained to sing even that low. I've acted in shitty college films before, and even I told every goddamn director I met, "I don't fucking sing, so if you don't want this to just be a big pile of shit, don't make me sing," and all of the Andrew Lloyd Webber wannabes agreed that I shouldn't sing, and everybody else was like "LOL singing WTF?"
I liked very much the 1990 mini serie adaptation and I think the closest to the atmosphere of the book and then second the stage version. This film for me on the last spot because of the singing ( Gerard Butler)and not convincing characters. Just my opinion no offense .
The film version was PHANTOM on steroids! The thing is that it really wasn't as good as the stage version. They should have really used the stage actors.
Schumacher ruined it! Andrew Lloyd Webber should have fired him and found somebody to direct this movie! But noooooooooooooooooooo! He had to get the jerk who ruined Batman to do it. What a waste of pure Broadway Magic.
the film is hideous! an awful abomination! the director had no idea what material he was dealing with! in this the phantom is a guy with bad skin who rows home in a boat! the mirror! oh yeh the phantom would leave that open???? masquerade!!! singing about the colours the characters and they bare all in black and gold!!!!its just terrible! emmy rosumund doesn't convince any one as the girl with the amazing voice and Gerard butler!!!!!!!
