From way back too, he was so scary in the Dirty Harry movie where played "Scorpio" and his acting has such a flair of it's own. I was happy to see him so much on DS9
I think his best DS9 moment was during the episode about the fake data rod presented to the Romulan Ambassador, where Sisko barges in and slaps Garak, then Garak goes on and reveals what he had planned all along, it was even more genius than I thought in the beginning.
Andy Robinson played my most favorite character in all of Star Trek: Elim Garak Simply the best, most complicated, intriguing and beguiling character ever written for and acted on Star Trek Deep Space Nine!!!
He was probably one of the best characters made on TV period. How many other characters on TV can compare or exceed the complexity and entertainment of Robinson's character? Very few.
Have to agree Garak was the greatest character in the entire Star Trek series superbly played by Andrew Robinson a superb actor...In The Pale Moonlight the scene at the end with Avery Brooks was acting at its best
Oh yeah. He was the hinge of it all. He gave Worf reason to exist on DS9, creating Martok at the same time He gave Quark humanity, very few things on DS9 didn't develop without his involvement. He saved the show.
That was the crux of DS9 - all the characters had complex personalities and past histories that gave them all emotional strengths and weaknesses. No one was "the perfect Starfleet officer/hero" stereotype. DS9 was Star Trek for a more mature and cleverer audience than the other series. I would say that DS9 was designed to make you think first and entertain second whereas the other shows were vice versa.
For many years this guy creeped me out as Scorpio. Then it was so refreshing to see him in other roles and to see the real life interviews with him. What a great guy... so down to earth and pleasant. Such a great actor too considering he really sold Scorpio as one of the most unlikable villains in film history.
Garak was a gem in this series, especially in the episode pale moon-light, it drew on all of Garak's dark skills to bring the Romulan's into the war...a truly great character superbly portrayed by Andrew Robinson.
Seeing this interview is the first time I've seen him as anything other than Garak, that I can remember. I have to say it REALLY makes me appreciate how well he played the character, because at first glance/hear it's really hard to even tell it is actually him. My favorite DS9 character, though. Without question.
I've met him at 3 cons, incLFCC this year, and he was kind, funny and a real sweetie,he remembered me from prev cons, even remembered my name. He's a great actor and a real inspiration.i hope I can meet him again one day,a really great guy.Jenny.
I always like the character Elim Garak, and now after watching this interview, I like the actor Andrew J. Robinson, just as much. He never forgets to thank his audience. Nowadays too many entertainers forget to appreciate that its the fans that get them to where they are.
When Garrick appeared in an episode there always was an anticipation. You never knew if he was telling the truth, who he would align himself with, who he would betray, what ends justify the means explanation he was gonna have, and most importantly what his play, deception, and intentions really were. Such an amazing character portrayed by a fantastic actor.
His book "A Stitch in Time" based on his character was Really great the writing, the background on Elim Garak was considered to be one Of the best, especially from one of the actors😉👾
@Cl0ckcl0ck As an actor/actress you're kind of damned if you do and damned if you don't. Play a character too well and you get typecasted, but put in a half hearted performance and you get forgotten.
He added great depth and intrigue to the show. Played a hard to understand, very grey, is he/ is he not trust worthy. Pale Blue Moonlight is top 10 because of the writing and Cisco's moral dilemma. Cast was great all around, but Garak was the most imaginative.
@@pywacket80 No, I definitely meant that someone in their seventies generally doesn't look like an old fogey yet. (aka, someone in their 80's) He looks about right for his age.
I salute Andrew Robinson and all the supporting character actors on DS9, They enriched the world of DS9 as much as the main actors on series did. 😎🤓👍👏👏👏
Garak scared the crap out of me at first. There were alarms ringing in my head and I didn't trust him at all. After seeing him a few times I finally placed him as the villain in the first Dirty Harry movie. After that I still didn't know what to make of Garak, but his character became more fun for me. Turned out to be one of the best characters on the show. Fantastic actor!
Let's face it when Garak came along he changed everything! By far the best character in Star Trek including Khan! Although Dukat was amazing too. DS9 and Voyager just kicked ST:TNG ass.
This guy was in the very first Spider-Man movie, he was in The A-Team, he was in the first Dirty Harry kickass film, and he plays one of the top three greatest characters in Star Trek. I mean fuk there should be some kind of Award of excellence for him. He would be perfect as any character written for him on The Blacklist
I recall an interview in which he said that he was out of work for years, after being typecast as a psycho-killer via his psycho-killer role in the first of the Dirty Harry movies. Garak's makeup gave him something to hide behind :-)
I cannot believe the interviewer did not ask Mr. Robinson about the fan favourite pairing of Garak and Bashir! That was one of my favourite DS9 slash pairings! ^.^
He's just the absolute best. Garak, brilliantly played as he was, legitimises this series above all the others as something which isn't just cowboys with ray guns but demonstrates how scifi can mirror real experiences, people and life. If I needed an example of why scifi isn't just about space wizards but can be about people, I'd show them an episode with Garak.
Andrew Robinson was superb in the role and it was a shame that he never received star billing in the opening credits, as he was easily as essential to the series as Shimerman and Meaney. A pity that he wasn't sold on the Mirror Universe Garak scriptwriting though - I don't think the MU episodes were ever meant to be deep or meaningful, they were just simple, old-fashioned fun and he had a wonderful master/servant comedy dynamic going with Michael Dorn.
Loved your character, he was so good and so bad, never knew where he stood. Garak made a great character, wish DS9 could of went on a few seasons longer.
I think the final question, in every interview with DS9 cast members, should have been "if a reasonable opportunity, with the right script came along, to make you that character again, for a season of TV, or a special, or a movie (but not a 7 year commitment) would you ever want to put on that character again, and be them again?"
HE GAVE A OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AS THE SCORPIO KILLER IN THE 1971 FILM DIRTY HARRY WITH CLINT EASTWOOD A REAL REAL SCARY CHARACTER WHAT A SUPER NICE NICE MAN HE IS IN REAL LIFE AND ONE GREAT GREAT ACTOR HE SHOULD HAVE WON AN ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN HIS ROLE AS THE SCORPIO KILLER IN THE FILM DIRTY HARRY ONE GREAT GREAT ACTING PERFORMANCE.
