Thank you for your question, Aurelija! It is clear in the Old Testament that God did instruct some people who had violated the Law to be killed. This was an act of mercy in order to preserve the human race as a whole. Andrew compares this to a doctor amputating an infected arm to keep the infection from spreading. God was harsh against those propagating sin because He wanted to stop sin's destruction from bringing harm to the whole human race. God treated people differently under the Old and New Covenants because Jesus' sacrifice changed the way that God was able to interact with humanity. Hi, Bill! If you'd like, we can share with you some of Andrew's commentary on these scriptures below. Note on Isaiah 10:15: "Isaiah 10:13-14 speak of the king of Assyria boasting that it was his strength and wisdom that caused him to conquer Syria and Israel. But the Lord said He was the one who brought all this to pass. Assyria was only a tool. Just as no one would credit a saw or an axe for work but, rather, the one who uses these tools, so the Lord was saying He was the one who brought this judgment on these nations." Note on Acts 4:27: "This is imputing the guilt for the crucifixion of Jesus to all, Jew and Gentile alike" Note on Acts 4:28: "The Lord used Herod, Pilate, and the Jewish rulers to accomplish His plan of redemption by crucifying Jesus. But that doesn’t mean they were just pawns in God’s hands. They had total freedom of choice. The Lord didn’t make them do those things. But He knew man and what was in them (John 2:24-25). He knew what they would do, and the Lord used their own sinfulness to accomplish His plans. 1 Corinthians 2:8 shows that if they had known the outcome of their actions beforehand, none of them would have condemned Jesus. This shows their free will was intact. On the Day of Judgment, all these people will be totally accountable for their actions in crucifying the Lord of glory."
