Andrews Sisters TV Series Pilot - Circa 1950
Titled, "Hollywood Music Shop' by Lou Levy
Runtime 29:54
I was given this recording 20 years ago when I was doing some research on the Andrews Sisters.
I had forgotten all about having it.
Upon re-discovering it, I tried to research it's origins.....
I found nothing at all regarding what we have here. This is not mentioned in any filmography, biography,
the very respectable writings on the sisters, either by H. Arlo Nimmo (The Andrews Sisters) or the excellent
work by author John Sforza's (The Andrews Sisters Story "Swing It") Or, for that matter any other
material was was able to come across. Google, IMDB, etc.... Nothing.
This is a TV pilot promo recording for a very early television series. There are two spots in the
recording where prospective advertisers could buy commercial time. The sisters touted how they
successfully sold on the radio and now on the media... television.
There is a cute quote by Patty where she after quibbling with her sisters, she asks"I wonder how
Connie Boswell got rid of her two sisters."
A song or two that I'm not sure I've ever hear before.
Did not see an actual date in the recording but going by the automobiles in the film it is evident
that it was recorded in the late 1940.s or very early to maybe 1950's.
Along with the Andrews Sisters are the following cast members:
Buddy Ebson
Marvin Kaplan
Claude Stroud
Donald McBride
Ray Walker

I love when they're singing Apple Blossom Time and sitting at the piano in the formation the Boswell Sisters always used to use! So glad I found this video of these talented and classy ladies! :)

Fantastic! Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful gem that's remained undiscovered for decades. We'll never know what may have happened if this pilot became a show, but it's now one of the only pieces of film exclusively focused on the legendary Andrews Sisters. It's marvelous to see them in the spotlight alone and splendid to see Buddy Ebsen make an appearance. It's also amazing to see a very young Marvin Kaplan, who many remember playing in the hit 1970s-80s US comedy "Alice," as telephone lineman and Mel's Diner regular, Henry Beesmeyer. Many thanks again for sharing this pop culture jewel.

I love this! At last we can hear LaVerne, who was really funny; and she's the comical one here. I was eight years old when this was made. Love those cars!

The Andrews Sisters are fantastic. I liked the line: "You will meet a new boy friend and he will be loaded." "You mean he drinks?"

There were so many filmed pilots for potential series at the time, this one got "lost in the shuffle". No sponsors were interested in sustaining it, either.

@@thejupiter2574 It had its moments, but the producer should have hired a writer to punch it up, and Buddy Ebson’s Tex is misconceived. It’s full of great music and I appreciate Patty’s references to the Boswell Sisters. This was fun to watch!

Thank u for posting this rarity. It's so good to see them like this. Sad though that the writing was so bad, made worse by Ebson. I dearly loved the sisters but the writing for this was not worthy of their talents. Yes IMO and no disrespect to the sisters. They deserved better.

3 lovely ladies, though I have to confess that I barely know them except from hearing a few of their more popular songs. I may have watched too much tv over the years, but this is, in my opinion, on odd " showcase " for a musical act. As another commenter here noted, a musical/variety show would have been a much better fit. And when you consider most acts were shopped around during this period and the sponsor was usually the party who determined the format of " their " show, it is odd that there was no sponsor(s) lined up. Some potential, interesting....co-stars(?), but the writing is typical of this period of tv in that it was most importantly not offensive and only occasionally amusing, and rarely clever.

Very revealing to hear all three of the sisters speaking . Laverne, the most Greek looking and oldest sister had a high voice . Maxene had a deeper voice . They sound so similar that they should have drove each other crazy . Of course we know how Patty sounds since she did most of the talking in various scenarios . Laverne was almost the silent sphinx in most appearances though she was the peacemaker between sisters Maxene and Patty 's family conflicts . Despite of it all I read somewhere that the sisters are buried in the same place as their parents

Check out the little "commercial" asking sponsors to pick up the show at 11:52. Quite amusing in its way. Someone should pluck it out and post in on YT. Too bad no prospective sponsor took them up on it.

The Andrews could easily done a successful series but one with a show business setting to give them plenty of time for music, group numbers, solo numbers (all three ladies could, guest talents and an idea behind the show (there does not seem to be an idea or any glue here).

Produced in 1951, by most of the same crew who filmed "THE ABBOTT & COSTELLO SHOW" at Hal Roach Studios (including writer/producer Alex Gottlieb and director Jean Yarbrough).

What a turkey this was, although an interesting piece of tv history. I feel they would have been better served with a straight variety show instead of a fake sitcom. I really liked the "commercials", however.

the problem with the show was character development, Cos Patty and Maxine keep going back and forth on being the leader within the group.
