SemideCoco Hi girl , I just received my scalp biopsy and it is Androgenetic alopecia , I also have been using Nuvaring for a long time now . I am thinking to stop the birth control , plus my dermatologist suggested to see endocrinologist. I will do that but meanwhile I will start the essential oil treatment as you recommend. Can you let me know if it worked out for you ? This is extremely stressful to shed this much hair !!

I tried inositol, and I actually think it was working, but unfortunately it was making me very nauseous (even though I was only taking 1g a day!), so I've had to stop. How many drops of rosemary oil (in a carrier oil) would you use per treatment?

This is my experience with Spirlactone and hair thinning im general: My dermatologist works at a major Seattle hospital and is experienced. She told me when I inquired that Spirlactone is generally very well tolerated. Some of her patients have taken it for a decade without issues (not during pregnancy). I am sensitive to medications and have been taking it for two weeks with minimal issues. It's a blood pressure medication, so I do not take any supplements that would lower blood pressure or consume potassium. The only side effects for me are dizzyness if I stand up too quickly and breast enlargement before my period. It is a diuretic but for me isn't any worse than drinking coffee. Drinking a full glass of water with it is key. I have to pee twice before I fall asleep, and by the morning I am not bloated or dehydrated. My derm said breast tenderness, and less commonly, spotting, are the most common side effects. I take 100mg before bed because it does make me feel a little lazy. My acne felt less oily and inflamed the very next day. I cannot tolerate any birth control because of the side effects, and Spirlactone doesn't bother me. My primary diagnosed me with Telogen Effluvium (stress hair loss) after my crown developed balding after using an irritating purple conditoner. The hair wasn't thick there to begin with. I have C-PTSD and in the thick of my past traumatic relationships I shed hair in the shower excessively. I never thought twice about the perpetual baby hairs on my temples until recently. I am 27 with no fertility issues (the opposite problem!) and very regular menstruation. Breast tenderness is normal for me, so I am unphased with this side effect from Spirlactone. If my hair continues growing like it is and the medication which I am taking for acne helps, so much the better! Vanity is my weakness, and my hairline was always a source of insecurity. When I had my appendix out I vaguely remember the doctor mentioning cysts my ovaries (age 18) but I never followed up on it. My periods are like clockwork, but occasionally I will have insane cramping and very, very heavy bleeding initially. I am quite athletic and a pescatarian. I take a ridiculous amount of natural supplements. My favorite for hair growth so far have been MSM (SO GOOD) and rosemary/peppermint oil scalp massages. I take chamomile for anxiety. I did test low on iron, so I am supplementing with that and taking magnesium which helps with the constipation from the iron. Hair loss in the shower stopped completely when I went off a medication called Propanol which I took for anxiety. My doctor said hair loss from that medication is rare, but I felt like it was throwing my body off. Medication and supplements are a personal journey! Some supplements throw my body off, just like some medications. Please don't be afraid to try Spirlactone. Often your body will adjust, and if the benefits outweigh the side effects, it can be very worthwhile. I know the weeks when I discovered what my hair looked like top down was BEYOND devastating. I will take sore boobs any day to get rid of the acne and hair loss!! Untreated androgen excess and PCOS can cause infertility. Please go to your doctor or dermatologist. ☺️ There is nothing to be ashamed of. So many women struggle with hormonal imbalances unnecessarily. There is help and hope!

Thanks so much for pointing this out. It’s definitely also important to note the age of this video because spironolactone now does not require lab monitoring for potassium.

I was so stressed today because of my hair loss. So frustrated... But your video gave me peace. Right now I doing minoxidil 2% twice a day, and peppermint oil blended in sweet almond oil every night (and a bunch of other things like omga3 caps and scalp massages). But the thing that I liked the most about this video was how you enlightened us all about health care and how we are pushed to do so much medication and yet no one goes to the root of the problem. And sadly that's global! Also, many of the solutions that available on the market or in clinical trials are focus the male pattern hair loss. Female pattern hair loss it's treated with less kindness and and options even though it's been proven that it's psychological impact on the live of so many women. I've been noticing, here in my country, the enormous amount of women that have FPHL. And I don't see health providers worried about that. So, to conclude: I thing that besides the fact that we have to deal with a huge lack of options (many of it loaded with hormones and cruel side effects) we, women, also have to deal with the social stigma, the painful anxiety due the hair loss and the obvious indifference from science to find a solution (any solution) adjusted to our biological needs. We must raise our voices, and demand work from our scientific community. ❤️

hi, your videos are really useful. The fact that you explain all the biological processes that are happening in a way that it is actually understandable is just great :). Given that you have a very deep understanding of this topic, I hoped I could ask for you for some advice, as I cannot put the puzzles together for my individual case. I have female pattern hair loss and policistic ovaries, hence I have been diagnosed with PCOS. I went to multiple blood tests, and my results are different for different occasions. First blood test: DHT was a bit too low and TSH was messed up. (TSH might have been a measurement issue, as later it was normal during two other blood tests.) D vitamin level was also a bit too low and according to endocrinologist, b12 was also too low. Some other tests later: I have normal DHT, normal testosterone, a very light insulin resistency,, high level of FSH and LH, a little bit higher level of cholesterol (not too bad). All the rest is normal (thyroid, new B12, vitaminD). I also have normal period, and I would say I have normal weigh (max 5kg plus). 23 years old. I was trying to figure out what could be the core cause of my hair problem (which should be high level of adrogens?), but I am really confused about the fact that i have normal testosterone. Later I also read that insulin resistancy can also lead to low level of DHT which can also cause hair loss. So I was going to start with supplements that lower the male hormones, but what if I actually have too low? Do you have any advice on what is the core issue or which type I have (ovary dominant androgen excess or adrenal dominant androgen excess), what supplements could be good and how to know more about my situation?

Hi, I just wanted to say that your videos are great because of the extent of your knowledge on this subject. You are helping so many people out there including me. I am 22 and have been going through this since I was 14. I have had zero help from my Drs and healthcare professionals where I live so I'm psyched that you've given options (especially natural ones). I wanted to ask you... What do you use yourself? Natural products or medical? Do you have an email or something which I could contact you on to discuss about this topic further? That would be really helpful, thanks! ♡

I was diagnosed with PCOS, hypothyroidism, and androgenic/androgenetic alopecia (female pattern baldness) around 14 years old. I was prescribed metformin, spironolactone, birth control (yes, at a very young age), and levothyroxine to combat these problems. I do think the spironolactone worked to slow down my hair loss but it tasted terrible and did not agree with me. The other meds did not work at all. My family members constantly comment on my hair loss (I used to have really thick, long, Princess Jasmine-like hair before puberty, and now I have about a third of it left and I'm only 29), and it really makes me self-conscious. Hopefully, one of these natural remedies will work.

@semideasmr 5 лет назад
Hi there, thanks for reaching out! First, I want to say that I'm sorry to hear what you're going through :( I hope that I can offer some help! Your dermatologist doesn't seem to be well versed on how to diagnose androgenetic alopecia based on lab tests. I talk about important lab tests to order in my part 3 video --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S94B-k1bPY4.html Many doctors are ordering the wrong tests, or aren't interpreting them properly. Many reference values are average but not optimal. Serum total or free testosterone levels while helpful for many patients, cannot pick up high testosterone levels in your tissues, only the blood. And DHEA-S levels need to be interpreted based on optimal ranges in your age category. It's important to investigate other root causes of your hair loss including thyroid issues, nutrient deficiencies (ferritin and vitamin D), or an autoimmune condition. Often these issues can co-exist with androgenetic alopecia too! As for whether you have PCOS, at least two of the following three criteria need to be met to receive that diagnosis. 1. oligo/anovulatory cycles (not ovulating regularly) 2. Androgen excess (Androgenetic alopecia, hirsutism, jawline acne, etc) 3. polycystic ovaries www.racgp.org.au/afp/2012/october/polycystic-ovary-syndrome/ Seeking a qualified doctor that is knowledgeable about PCOS/hormone imbalance will help a lot. They can give you an accurate diagnosis and treatment. If you're looking for a more holistic/natural treatment, then I recommend a naturopathic doctor specializing in women's health/ hormones. Finally, I do recommend completing the following quiz: drfionand.com/8-steps-pcos-quiz/ It's very helpful in figuring out what you might be experiencing and whether you have PCOS. Dr. Fiona McCulloch also has an excellent book called "8 Steps to Reverse Your PCOS". Hope that's helpful, and best of luck! Love, Semide

I am currently on spironolatone & minoxidil both oral due to androgenetic alopecia, which was triggered by my high stress and ptsd during a bad period of time. I also take the pill, didn't notice any hairloss from the pill although I did start it after taking the spironolactone & minoxdil. Would you suggest I discontinue the pill, I initially started taking to regulate my periods which were irregular as a side effect from the spironolactone. Also is it safe to take saw palmetto with medications? I'm hoping to work with a naturopath in the future, as I'd love to be off the medications for good. Thanks, great video 😊

And gradually I begn to lose my hair starting from that area !! Then I visited doctor and got my whole body hormone checked but everything was alright,,nothing hyper or hypo !! So doctor couldn't exactly know why I am having this hair loss!! Also,,my mom has same kinda hair but still its cause is undiagnosed ! I used minoxdil 2% but it didn't work for me !! @semideasmr 4 года назад
Hmmm your story is very puzzling. What comes to mind for me right now is maybe something autoimmune like alopecia areata since your mom had it too? But it could also be hormonal/metabolic and your doctor wasn't looking at optimal ranges for hormones. Nutrient deficiencies (iron, B vitamins, etc) and infections should also be considered. I suggest seeing a Naturopathic Doctor or integrative medical doctor if you can. Hope that helps!

Did you say that having been on the birth control pill makes the hair loss worse? Can you explain why? I stopped taking the pill 3 months ago after having been on it for 6 years ( I was prescribed it before for PCOS, although I don’t think I have insulin resistance) and my hair started falling out immediately and dramatically. Handfuls and handfuls and handfuls of my hair are falling out everyday and just seem to be getting worse. I starting to think about getting back on the pill to stop the hair loss, but do you think that will make the hit loss worse down the road?
@semideasmr
@semideasmr 5 лет назад
JessieStrail first of all, i’m so happy you asked this question and are educating yourself about the birth control pill! So the birth control pill helps suppress many symptoms. It will suppress the body’s communication from the brain to the ovaries, it will let your body depend on synthetic estrogen rather than making its own and it has a lot of side effects, many that your doctor doesn’t even know bc they haven’t looked at the research. I was really surprised about this, because I too have been on the pill for PCOS and it only made everything worse. So what you’re experiencing is likely something called post birth control syndrome! drbrighten.com/post-birth-control-syndrome/ Some of the reasons why the pill makes hair loss worse in the long run. 1. Your body now has trouble making its own estrogen bc the communication is not working! Estrogen is so so important for good hair 2. The pill really depletes b vitamins!! And we all know b vitamins are essential for hair health and just overall health! So definitely try taking a high quality active b complex :) 3. The pill worsens insulin resistance. Every case of PCOS has some kind of insulin resistance. Mild to severe. I was surprised to learn that even though my fasting glucose and insulin were normal, once I had some glucose, my insulin did not handle it well. This is called 2-hour insulin glucose challenge test, and you can order one! Because the pill can really worsen insulin resistance, this can drive up androgens in your body and increase hair loss via androgenic alopecia :( I hope this is helpful, and I just want to end by saying that it’s a good idea to look for another doctor (naturopathic or functional medicine doc) who specializes in improving hormonal health via root causes. It can definitely be done :) drfionand.com/8-steps-to-reverse-your-pcos/ This is a wonderful book to get some more information about how to reverse PCOS and it’s symptoms naturally! Best of luck!! Love, Semide

I have sever PCOS, by which i mean my hair is almost bald and i have always cysts on my ovaries. But i have my period every 27 days regularly, every month with terrible pain. I tried androcur(which made my body lose period for 2 months) and also I've tried Diane 35 for 2 months, i felt terrible and left them. After i left diane 35 my own hormones made my cycle in just 27 days and now i am having my period regularly, it is the second month, my own hormes are doing so well with making my period regular.. Such an interesting thing. A lot of women with PCOS don't have thier period regularly but i have mine so so regular. Also i don't have insulin resistance, at least my glucose and my insulin are normal, my testosteron is normal. But beside all of this, i have sever baldness and cysts on my ovaries(which are so painful, i cant even walk sometimes, they may get up to 20-30 mm diameter) and they keep for 6 months. Even with pcos women may experience everything different. I still don't know how to treat my baldness. Although now i have no cysts(USG showed none fee days ago, but they are unpredictable, i hope they don't come back soon) because i keep a diet, a healthy one recommended by a endocrynogyst. My hair is still falling. So strange everything happens. Also my doctor says i need to see how are some of my vitamins, B12, calcium etc. and supplement them if needed. What do you think about vitamins with hairlass on our pcos?
@semideasmr
@semideasmr 5 лет назад
Hi Marcela, thanks for sharing. It sounds like you're going through a difficult time with your hair loss and cysts, and I would like to extend my best wishes for recovery. I think looking at nutrient deficiencies (ferritin, B vitamins, zinc, vitamin D) is a great place to start, and improving your diet to stabilize blood sugar and incorporate more nutrients. So it sounds like you're off to a great start. Fasting glucose and insulin will not tell you the whole story about insulin resistance. It's better to order a 2-hour glucose insulin challenge to see how your body metabolizes sugar. This is how I was diagnosed with insulin resistance. Eating a diet rich in vegetables, fibre, healthy fats and protein is a great way to improve insulin resistance, as well as improving sleep and engaging in moderate exercise regularly (walking, resistance training, yoga, etc.). Love, Semide

I have been suggested by 3 of my doctor's that I have PCOS because I have pretty much every single symptom, including the hair loss and random excess facial/chin hair, even accelerated graying...is saw palmetto ok to use if I might be or be trying to get pregnant? I've googled already, and I hadn't seen a lot on this

Hi Sharonda, thanks for sharing your question. Saw palmetto is considered in the pregnancy category X-->strictly unsafe in pregnant women or women trying to get pregnant. This is because saw palmetto is a 5-α-reductase inhibitor, and can cause harm to a male fetus and his development. Here is some more information--> www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK216069/

Informative video, however you are incorrect about the birth control pill worsening your pituitary axis. Ideally after a 3 - 6 month course, it allows for your menstrual cycle to become more regularised. Also, blood clots are very rare but more likely in women with significant risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, older age etc. As for the increased risks of cancer, that is also minimal upon closer research (coming from a medical student and whose family members have PCOS)
@semideasmr
@semideasmr 5 лет назад
Hi Mehra, thanks for the comment and so happy to meet another medical student so that I can geek out with you :). Let me rephrase that by saying that the birth control pill disrupts the HPO axis. It's kind of the purpose really. The estrogen or progesterone or both negatively feedbacks at the hypothalamus and the outcome is reduced LH and FSH secretion and therefore ideally no ovulation and no pregnancy. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2853991/ When PCOS patients are on the OCP, PCOS symptoms will improve. Ovarian androgen secretion decreases and SHBG increases. This is good news for PCOS patients with androgen excess. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6094524/ However, what clinicians are seeing and patients are experiencing time and again are negative consequences after stopping the OCP and often during too, especially in those of us with PCOS who have metabolic abnormalities, namely insulin resistance and high CVD risk, androgen excess, and many other hormonal imbalances including high LH:FSH. We also see that synthetic progestin and estrogen in the pill act very differently in the body than bio-identical progesterone and estrogen. Many PCOS patients including myself and many of my viewers report longer than normal periods of post-pill amenorrhea, hyperandrogenism, acne, and mental health issues. It is documented that OCP may also worsen insulin resistance and gut dysbiosis. This is especially concerning since insulin resistance and gut dysbiosis are important causative factors in PCOS. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2435645/ care.diabetesjournals.org/content/30/3/471 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26658991 Many clinicians are now collectively calling these side effects "post birth control syndrome". Hopefully with the rise of PCOS and OCP research we will see more of this in the literature. I recommend keeping an eye on it. Here is a recent articles I have found (hopefully you can access the full text through your school). www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3109/01443615.2016.1159667 Ultimately, I believe that we need more long-term post-OCP studies to be able to provide the best treatment for patients. And more research on lower-risk alternatives that better address root causes.

Hi Jennifer thanks for the comment! I don't use any medication anymore (was on the pill 6 years ago) after learning about and experiencing side effects. I'm still working on my hair loss (it can take years to treat naturally), but so far I found that diet, lifestyle changes and supplements that improved my insulin resistance and helped me get my period back were also helpful for my hair. Next week's video will be all about this! I also use Dr. Axe's DIY hair growth recipe 3 times a week, and will do a progress video update in a few months. draxe.com/hair-thickener/

I am 24 years old and my hair shedding started after I got off of birth control in 2015 . Since then it feels like it’s getting worse . My hair is not necessarily getting thinner , i actually have really thick and long hair despite me loosing hair since then , but no matter what i take it doesn’t seem to help . About a year ago I started to break out around my chin area which has since then escalated to cystic acne but only in my chin. I also started taking women’s daily multi vitamins and that did seem to help a lot with my cystic acne but nothing for my hair loss ..... based on what you know ... do you think I May have pcos ? Or just vitamin deficiency? I also had my hormones and thyroid checked and everything came out normal . It’s all very confusing
@semideasmr
@semideasmr 5 лет назад
Hi there, Thanks for reaching out! I know with hormones it can get so confusing. The cystic acne on your jaw line and the hair shedding leads to me think that you have some insulin resistance happening, and perhaps elevated testosterone/DHT because of the insulin resistance. This is unfortunately a side effect of the birth control pill: it can cause insulin resistance. It would be a good idea to look into post birth control syndrome! drbrighten.com/post-birth-control-syndrome/ Check out this link above. Dr. Jolene Brighton is the expert on this syndrome and you can definitely reverse it naturally! Ultimately, the most important thing to do is to heal your gut microbiome (the pill damages the gut), take an active B complex (the pill also depletes B vitamins), and work on reversing insulin resistance through diet and lifestyle changes! I talk about this in my part 3 video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S94B-k1bPY4.html Hope that helps!! Semide ❤️

@semideasmr
@semideasmr 4 года назад
Hi Ruhi, when you are pregnant, estrogen and progesterone levels are higher than usual, which can be very beneficial for hair growth and shine. Ultimately, I don't think it is a good idea to have such high levels of hormones throughout life, but bringing them into an optimal range can be helpful. You can look into bioidentical hormones, many practitioners prescribe them. Otherwise, a more long-term healthy lifestyle, nutrition and supplement routine like I talk about in my videos can over time bring hormones to an optimal state. Please do reach out to a naturopathic doctor or integrative medical doctor that focuses on women's hormonal health. Hope this helps!

@semideasmr 5 лет назад
Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately this can be the case with many birth control pills, especially long term it depletes B vitamins, disrupts hormonal axes and worsens insulin resistance. This is known as post birth control syndrome. It will be a long process, but I do believe your hair can grow back! Getting off the pill is the first step, and from there it's important to make some dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as correcting nutrient deficiencies (especially B vitamins D3, and perhaps iron). The link below explains all about post birth control syndrome, and I also recommend working with a naturopath who specializes in restoring hormone balance. Hi! from what I have read in this scientific article (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23974579), most women require a minimum dose of 200 mg for at least 6 months to start seeing effects. And it may not work for all women, especially if your hair loss involves other causes (thyroid issues, nutrient deficiencies, etc).
